Changing Directions

Just as when the careers of Persistent Personality (PP) and Male Talent (MT) are on the rise, Their Handlers (TH) suddenly felt shivers and knew they have a potential problem if a government measure were to be suddenly made public. If the names of PP and MT are allegedly on the drug list, their hard work would be gone in a snap.

Sometime ago, MT was just a struggling personality, who was not yet focused on the direction of his career. While finding out where he wanted to go, he met a Former Friend (FF) and their relationship became risky. Allegedly, FF was the one who introduced MT to the risky habit. Thus, FF was giving MT what he needed and he could no longer brag about clean living.

When TH found out about the escapades of MT, they gave him a warning. They reminded him that his career was being affected by his shenanigans and if he remains nonchalant, he will not have projects. Consequently, his family would lose a major source of finances. As the breadwinner, MT was responsible as far as his family was concerned. TH gave him an ultimatum, that is, he should leave FF or else, he might lose his career. FF got dumped, as MT chose his career.

One day, MT and PP found out their attraction for each other. Thus, the two became close and unfortunately, PP became open to whatever MT wanted. MT introduced PP to small samples of his habit. With no FF around, MT was transacting with A Source (AS) directly. Every bad habit starts small and soon, PP was into it as well.

Their fun days became tension-filled, as the law caught up with AS. Part of the evidence was a master list of clients and MT was allegedly included. TH found out about MT’s inclusion and had to do something to save the face of MT. A hefty sum was allegedly paid to remove MT from the list, as such inclusion might suddenly lead to linking PP as well. A huge scandal was something that TH could not afford, as MT and PP could lose endorsements, too.

Finally, TH talked to MT to fix his life again. Being on such a list is a very serious matter. Realizing what he could lose, MT fixed his life’s direction and PP became wiser and influential in his choices for the better.

Mistreating Gays

When people crack jokes and the center of the joke shows a stunned reaction, the joker usually says it was not really meant. However, jokes are said to be half-meant. Thus, the inner persona can sometimes be revealed in such unguarded moments.

One time, a group of fans saw Young Hunk (YH) and his celebrity friends hanging out. One Fan (OF) started to observe YH for the right timing for them to ask for a photo. If YH were in a bad mood, then the fans would not bother, as they did not want to create any fuss.

Politely, OF approached YH and asked if they could have a picture with him. YH said that OF’s female friends can have a photo with him, but OF could not. YH said that he does not allow gays to have photos with him. Allegedly, YH said, ‘Bawal ang bakla,’ to the face of OF. OF was embarrassed and thus, he and his female friends walked away. As soon as they turned their backs, they heard YH say that it was all a joke and they should come back. However, they were already embarrassed and decided to continue walking away from YH.

Ironically, the career of YH revolves around gays in the industry. Gays in the production team of his projects at a big network are indispensable in making sure things run smoothly. His big boss, who is responsible for giving him a second chance in the network he left, is rumored to be gay as well. Too bad, YH showed that he could be homophobic and discriminatory toward gays. Even if he took back his word, it was too late, as he had already created an impression that his good looks do not equate to character.

‘The sad truth about bigotry is that most bigots either don't realize that they are bigots, or they convince themselves that their bigotry is perfectly justified.’― Wayne Gerard Trotman

Taking Advantage Again

Sometimes, people think that the reputation they have built over the years could allow them to get away with anything they do. Moreover, people who are among the pioneers in a field often are looked upon as the respected ones because they dared to venture into the unknown and with their success, paved the way for others to follow. While making a name in the unknown field, these people managed to build a name and recognition from clients who were pleased with their work.

If there is something to be said about Known Personality (KP) is that she knows how to work a trade and take advantage of a reputation that she has built in more than a decade of being in her field. Thus, KP would be among the top personalities to be invited in many gatherings of the elite brands and companies.

KP knows her worth and she will not hide it all. KP could maneuver her way to take advantage of her invitations to high-end events overseas. KP was once invited to a press launch of an international brand in a nearby country. While at the hotel, KP allegedly availed a hefty amount of spa treatments that she charged to her hotel bill.

When Her Hosts (HH) saw the charges, they reminded her that they would only cover incidentals, and not the spa treatments. Nonetheless, HH did not make a fuss over it and just allowed it to pass. In another event, KP was again invited by HH and she was reminded of the allowable charges that she could incur while covering the event. KP did not follow and allegedly did the same thing as she did in the previous one. After the second incident, HH was very disappointed. That was the last straw and KP was no longer invited to any of their events.

Repost: Tyra Banks Interviews Miss Universe Catriona Gray

Catriona Gray lava-walked her way from Twitter fame to a Miss Universe crown. Here, the Filipina queen and top model mentor Tyra Banks continue the thread in V119.

Tyra Banks Hi Catriona—can you hear me?

Catriona Gray Good morning from Indonesia, Tyra!

TB Wait, how do you say “good morning” [in Indonesian]? Don’t tell me. Selamat pagi! That’s it. Well, good afternoon from California. I’m still recovering from your “Lava Walk” at the Miss Universe pageant. I just kept watching and rewatching, like, What’s her secret? I was totally fangirling! Where were you when you saw that I had tweeted at you?

CG Oh my gosh, Tyra... I was sitting at dinner with all the girls. We were tired, quietly eating after rehearsal, when I got all these notifications from what you’d tweeted. I turned to my two friends, Sweden and Denmark, and started freaking out, like, Oh my gosh, Tyra Banks just tweeted about my walk!

TB It’s funny, I actually thought you’d already won. And then I saw the headlines, like, “Tyra is rooting for Catriona!” I was like, oh I hope I wasn’t showing favoritism or something. [But] a friend of mine, [YouTube personality] Patrick Starrr, [is also Filipino]. Have you met him yet? You guys are both amazing.

CG I follow his videos! I haven’t met him yet, but there was such support for my Miss Universe journey from all the Filipino celebrities. It’s something Filipinos often do: support our Filipino representatives, when we have them. And I freaked out when you tweeted me! You writing “Pinoy Power” was a proud moment for me and all Filipinos.

TB Well your walk, and how you arched your back, was amazing. But I heard you have a medical condition [having to do] with your back, right?

CG Yeah, I have scoliosis. It hasn’t really hindered me at all, except after long day in heels when I do particularly feel it in my posture muscles.

TB I am all about “flawesome,” which means your flaws are awesome. How did you start in pageants?

CG We love pageantry in the Philippines, but growing up my dream was never to be a beauty queen; I entered a pageant at 21 to bring awareness to the charity I was working for, and still work for. Even at Miss Universe, I was just grateful to be there. My mindset wasn’t, what if I don’t win; it was an attitude of gratitude.

TB Do you have any beauty secrets? Back in the day we’d hear about Vaseline on teeth. Any new tricks?

CG I’ve actually seen girls backstage spraying their body with hairspray. Apparently it helps with jiggling.

TB Oh no way! So it’s a like a cellulite stopper? You know what’s so funny... For years, when I did the Victoria Secret runway, I would get these long trains and other models would get jealous, but it was to cover my cellulite! I wish I would have known the hairspray trick; I could’ve shown a little more!

CB I haven’t tried it, but I saw girls doing it!

TB I love it. Okay, let’s talk about success. With success comes doubters and haters. “You’re dreaming that big? Come down to earth.” With your success now, what do you have to tell those people?

CG I really don’t understand the need to bring people down. It’s such a good feeling to celebrate and lift each other up. I would just tell them to look at their own life and how they treat other people. Maybe their perspective is a negative one, but life is too short.

TB Exactly. I always say that hurt people hurt people. Okay, tell me about your humanitarian work. How did you decide you wanted to give back?

CG I started after I had taken over as breadwinner for my family at the age of 20. It was a big responsibility that I just wasn’t ready for and I felt so much pressure having to provide as a model, which can be very sporadic work. I was down about my situation, and attempting to escape it by turning to charity work. I found a charity, the one I continue to work with, called Young Focus Philippines. It’s based in the Tondo neighborhood of Manila. The place itself is not very beautiful; it’s known as a garbage dump, and many of the families there make a living by scavenging. Most of the houses are made from scavenged materials and children play with things that they find in the trash. I had never experienced poverty first hand, and it impacted me so hard. So, we work giving free schooling to these children. Education is a solution to poverty; it’s something you can give a child that can never be taken away.

Tyra Banks' interview with Catriona Gray originally appears in V119, our Music Issue. V119 is available for preorder now at vmagazine.myshopify.com.
