Walker's publicist Ame van Iden confirmed his death, but said she could not elaborate beyond statements posted on Walker's official Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Walker was a passenger in a friend's 2005 Porsche Carrera GT and both were attending a charity event for his organization, Reach Out Worldwide, in the community of Valencia in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles north of Hollywood.
The website for the charity said the Saturday event was intended to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
The wreck took place about 3:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. ET), about 300 yards from the office park where the event was held. The speed limit there is 45 mph.
Up and down the road near the crash site were burned rubber and doughnut marks as though someone smoked their tires in figure 8 patterns.
"I don't know if the marks in the road are related to the crash," said Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Brian Allen.
Deputies arrived at the scene to find a vehicle on fire, he said
Once fire crews put the flames out, they found two occupants, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.
Saturday evening, all that remained was the burnt mangled metal of the red car and a light pole that had been knocked down.
The county coroner said that, given the condition of the bodies, it will take some time to definitively identify them.
Box office success
Walker's career began on the small screen, first with a commercial for Pampers when he was 2, and then with parts in shows such as "Highway to Heaven" and "Touched By An Angel."
His first few movie roles were as supporting characters in teen flicks, most notably in "Varsity Blues."
His career really took off when he was cast as undercover cop Brian O'Conner infiltrating a street-racing gang in 2001's "The Fast and the Furious."
The box-office success of the surprise summer hit yielded numerous sequels. And along with Vin Diesel, Walker was one of the franchise stalwarts.
At the time of his death, he was working on the seventh film of the franchise, due out next year.
Walker wasn't just a car enthusiast on the silver screen, off-screen, the actor competed in the "Redline Time Attack" racing series.
On his verified Twitter account, Walker described himself as "outdoorsman, ocean addict, adrenaline junkie ... and I do some acting on the side."
Walker also is the star of "Hours," an independent film scheduled to be released December 13 about a father struggling to keep his newborn infant alive in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
Twitter and other social media exploded with reactions to Walker's death.
"Completely numb and saddened to hear of the tragic death of Paul Walker," wrote one.
Hollywood condolences came from Will Smith, Jack Osbourne, DMX and others.
"No, @RealPaulWalker. No. No. No," tweeted actress Alyssa Milano. Walker guest-appeared with her in the 80s comedy, "Who's The Boss?" "Rest with the angels. You. Sweet boy. #beauty #love #RIP."
He is survived by his 15-year-old daughter, Meadow.

A Difficult Milestone
Apparently, a New Teleserye NT had to be axed this early by its network. There was so much expectation from NT owing to its high drama and extraordinary genre plus its big cast headed by the network's top actors and directed by big names in the industry.
NT was supposed to have a long run, but due to poor ratings and less advertisement plus high production cost, it had to be shortened before producers start to lose more money and well, credibility. NT was given until the first few weeks of 2014.
Supposedly, Another New Teleserye AT which stars Actress/Host AH and fellow reality Search Winners SW will be shown in the afternoon slot, but since there will be a hole in the primetime programming with the departure of NT, AT will be moved to primetime as NT replacement.
And now for the latest development, NT which was earlier shortened to run until first few weeks of next year was shortened even further and will only air until the last few days of this year. Overheard that a movie re-run is set to replace NT.
Furthermore, a Drama Series DS which is currently airing which casts some Sexy Stars SS will only air until this year – again also due to poor ratings and low advertising. Reportedly, a movie re-run will air in its timeslot.
In light of the state of its primetime series, the network has reportedly made a crucial decision - that it will already stop producing teleseryes. Obviously, the bombshell decision was a difficult one for the bosses. It has been quite a while that the network been on the losing end with its series and recovering such losses is no easy feat.

Fearless Forecast: Harry Styles Has the Best Chance of Going Solo
Teenage girls (and sometimes, even boys) screaming their names, buying their albums and watching their concerts. Then, out of nowhere, they break apart and only one of them becomes successful in pursuing a career in music entertainment industry.
After NSYNC, Westlife and Backstreet Boys, a new boy band from the UK becomes an international singing sensation. With its members Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, London-based pop boy band One Direction takes the whole world by storm with their popular hits like "What Makes You Beautiful", "Live While We're Young” and “One Way or Another”.
Harry Styles, however, has the best chance of going solo.
Earlier this March, many fans speculated that Harry will pull a Justin Timberlake and take his boy band fame into a solo career.
As lead for the English-Irish boy band, Harry gets overwhelming amount of spotlight that would boost his career if ever he decides to go on his own.
A solo track sung by Harry entitled ‘Don’t Ever Let Me Go’ also got leaked online, causing rumours that the band will soon break up. But One Direction’s rep was quick to dismiss speculations.
