Epic Fail in Handling Customer Complaint: Javier Berenguer-Testa of Manila Peninsula

My friend and I were at the Peninsula lobby having our chamomile tea to cap the evening. When it was served, I noticed that there were too much tea leaves in the cup that were choking me. I told the waitress that Peninsula should change the tea strainer as it has always been like that. I asked her if I could express my concern to the supervisor so that this long time issue can be addressed. She nodded and left.

Twenty minutes after, there was still no supervisor on hand. I was complaining to my friend about it and he told me that he saw the waitress talking to the supervisor and motioning him to go and talk to me but he simply brushed it off. Since the supervisor was too busy to attend to me, I stood up, went to the service station and asked for the food and beverage manager.

When Mr. Testa came to our table, I started complaining about the tea. I was a bit agitated after being ignored for more than twenty minutes, but his manner of talking to me was not in any way helping to calm me down. While talking about the tea, in a high-strung and arrogant manner, he said to me, "You calm down!"

He said - Calm down! (3 or 4 times)
I said - I am!
No, you're not!
I am!
No, you're not!
I am!
No, you're not!

I was surprised by his brazenness - how can anyone keep cool when the one asking for it was himself high-strung and rude? I felt early on that his purpose was to irk me more than to help me. Why? Because he wouldn't want to listen and allow me to talk. How would anyone calm down that way? He was butting in and raising his voice. He was fighting with me!

Granting for the sake of argument that I wasn't as calm as Mr. Testa wanted it - should a guest be subjected to such arrogance? Mr. Testa being at the frontline should have at least apologized and sympathized with me first so that I would calm down and relax, and not talked to me in a manner that would aggravate an already tense situation. What he did was a big no-no in customer handling - no way to treat an irate (loyal) hotel guest.

Based on this incident, I believe that Manila Peninsula's Food and Beverage Manager, Javier Barenguer-Testa, needs to develop his skills in handling customer complaints. I rest my case!

For the Love and Passion

Happy Leading Man LM is on top of his game, having too much of a good thing. LM professes to be so blessed in love and career that critics say that sometimes, he seems to forget that he is a celebrity. LM and Girlfriend GF have been proudly proclaiming their love for each other. In a sense, the couple has been overdoing it just to prove a point, perhaps due to the avalanche of bashers they encounter online.

To a certain extent, LM and GF maybe contradicting themselves, especially LM who is always suspect of misdeeds. The stress of disproving rumors must have been taking it’s toll on their lives that there are times they overreact and in the process inviting more negative publicity.

On rare times that the couple were seen together in public was at a restaurant bar. Being controversial, LM and GF seem to have bashers lurking everywhere for a challenge. Allegedly, LM overheard a guy/basher GB saying f*t and b**d which LM believed clearly alluded to him. Perhaps, not in his best element, LM’s temper got the better of him and went on to give GB what he wanted. LM angrily tried to engage GB to a fistfight, catching the attention of the diners. Fortunately for the basher and more for LM, cooler heads prevailed and disengaged them.

Heard from the grapevine that LM had been noticeably irritable and bad-tempered for a long time now. Allegedly, he told GF to stop reacting on social media anymore as it only invites more bashers and fuel negative publicities. Observers say that apart from the stresses of the job, the bad publicities and the public expectation are getting too much for him. Yet LM can’t just afford to ignore them knowing that doing so will entail incalculable losses to him and his family – GF included.

For the meantime, LM projects himself as a do-gooder, always on top of his game. He should be thankful that among the many hits and misses, it’s still the hits that truly define him.

The Spoiled Entrepreneur

Whether we like it or not, there are really people whose façade belies what they truly are inside. The sweet and smiling face turning like a monster when no one’s looking is nothing new at all. In showbiz, stars are instinctively trained by this culture of make-believe. What most stars usually do in front of the cameras don’t necessarily translate to their personal conduct and dealings. Some people say that they are not called “artista’s” for nothing.

When they go to their private abode - away from the public eye - it is there where they unleash the person behind the mask.

Sweet-looking and quiet Star SS used to hog the headlines for her controversial love affairs. She joined showbiz out of affinity with a another actress who used to be headline-grabbing affairs as well.

SS has an Established Business EB which has a good number of loyal clientele. One day, SS went to visit EB to have some services done on her. It was quite full when she went there, nevertheless she looked around searching for her Favorite Staff FS whom she learned was servicing another client. Upon learning this, SS did not hesitate one bit to call FS and ordered her to stop what she was doing with the client and start working on her (SS) asap.

With a heavy heart, the poor FS had no choice but to leave the client hanging on with unfinished work on her. FS knew that no amount of reason would convince SS to do otherwise, or she risked being scolded in public. She was so embarrassed as it did not just happen once but several times already that SS would just barge in at EB anytime she wanted and would order any FS she preferred to service her – without deference to the other clients.

Seems like the slogan - Customer is always right - will be forever alien to left-thinking SS.

Ramen Nagi Butao 豚王: Black King, Red King & Green King Ramen in Manila!

RAMEN NAGI'S BUTAO 豚王 Ramen is hailed as the BEST Ramen in Hong Kong by most foodies. It was established by Ramen Master Chef Ikuta Satoshi in Shibuya, Tokyo in 2006. It's a young, authentic and very creative ramen house which is easy to find by just following the long queues.

They have RAMEN NAGI branches in Shibuya, Nishi Shinjuku1F, and Kogame in Tokyo. In Hong Kong, they are popularly known as BUTAO with branches in Central, Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui. They opened international franchises in Taipei, Jakarta, Indonesia and soon in Manila. (There's no branch in Singapore.)

Recently, BUTAO held its first Pop-up Store to test and introduce the first ever bowls of Butao King (traditional pork-bone soup), Black King (Butao broth with squid ink), Red King (spicy miso-based soup) and Green King(Japanese-Italian fusion: olive oil, basil and cheese) in Manila.

Our foodie friend Jin Perez of Jin Loves to Eat blog said, "There are too many ramen shops sprouting left and right in Hong Kong, but Butao Ramen remains to be my favorite."
The Pop-up Ramen Nagi Butao store was held for one day at Selah Bistro and Coffee Bar at Robinson’s Cybergate.
The first ever Butao ramen bowls in Manila were served here.
It was a by-invitation-only affair with friends, mall business partners and some bloggers attending.
BUTAO Ramen is the traditional tonkotsu ramen with a milky rich pork soup. It got its name from BUTA which means pork and O means King, so Pork King.
The soup was rich and really good with thin noodles and the right egg. Since they had limited time to prepare for the pop-up, they used Philippine pork which is a bit thick and tough.
Richie of the Pickiest Eater in the World loves Butao among all the ramens we tasted that day.
BLACK KING. My wife and I both agreed that our favorite is the squid ink ramen known as the Black King. It has finely-chopped squid, rich black soup with lots of garlic.
It reminds you of eating black ink spaghetti with yummy soup and egg.
RED KING. This is the chili ramen version with a smooth hotness that does not stay on your mouth. I love it and it was a pleasure eating it without getting tired of the taste.
CURRY KING. This was really good too but I felt a bit weird eating curry with pasta. The curry is best paired with rice, and curry lovers rave about this ramen.
Thank you to Roxanne of Plains and Prints, who brought the Butao franchise here in Manila, for the Butao ramen feasts :)
The winner for us is the Black King and this is something that foodies would rave about in Manila.
Before we go, Ramen Master Chef Ikuta decided to serve us a special ramen bowl of Ebi King and the famousGreen King ramen of Butao.
Ebi King, the shrimp-based ramen, was a bit salty for us. But the Japanese loved this type of Ramen.
GREEN KING. This is one of the most innovative ramens I've ever tasted. And it's quite unique because it is Italian-inspired with basil, olive oil and yes -- cheese!

It's like eating pesto pasta with soup and putting cheese on top of your ramen works!
It was great to see Michael Lim of Fashion Pulis fame with Ramen Master Chef Ikuta during the Butao Pop-up :)
Overall, we love the Black King, Red King and most specially Green King. If you think you have tasted all the ramen flavors in Manila, wait until you get a taste of Butao! I love the creativity of the chef, and the unique ramen combinations.

I'm excited for Butao to open in Manila because they have the most extensive and unique condiments that you can add on with your ramen. I wonder how much each ramen bowl would cost...

We can't wait for RAMEN NAGI BUTAO 豚王 to open in Manila!
