Between Honor and Greed

What was once unheard of has now become part of the system among network, manager and talent. At the very least, this maybe classified as inside corruption with the talents getting the short end of the deal.

Top network executive NE is relentless in making extra, big bucks at the expense of its many talents. NE squeezes every possible opportunity to milk talents at all cost. NE's usual connections are the talent managers TM of these stars.  

First, NE talks to the TM’s to raise the talent fees TF of his stars by 15% more so that there would be room for NE's commissions which is exactly that - the padded 15%.  NE tells TM's that the extra 15% is the additional amount they would charge that will be shouldered by the clients/ producers for all the  projects of the talents. It really sounds so off for NE to be doing this owing to the image that the network projects.  

Although extremely bothered, some TM’s take it blindly, citing survival as the main reason. But not so for this noted  talent manager NTM who although beholden to NE for the projects given to his talents, is feeling the pinch and consequence of this ‘under-the-table’  transaction. Certainly such is not for the best interest and is counter-productive for his stars as clients will look elsewhere to get  better deals. 

It is for this reason that NTM wanted to move out his major talent MT to a rival network RN. He had some press release about the matter and wanted to telegraph his strong sentiments to NE that the deal will never be acceptable to him.

Anent all this, will NTM finally make good his word to transfer his other talents elsewhere? When will NE realize that a lasting legacy is far more important than everything all those 15% can buy?

Moderating One's Greed

When networks employ child star talents to ink management contract with them, it is imperative that special provisions are in place to make sure that their rights as children are protected. The government has been strict on this as contained in the provisions of DOLE ( Department of Labor and Employment) a government organization that safeguards the rights of the working children (15 years old and below) against a working environment that is abusive - mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful.

But apart from that, there are some violations that exist and these have something to do with management contract. A major network MN has a child star CS under its management. The little star is not that popular yet but talented enough to get MN's interest to put her under its roster of talents. In fact the little girl had already appeared in a teleserye topbilled by MN's most popular loveteam. When the show ended several months ago, MN already stopped giving projects to CS.

When they inquired from MN executives, they were told that MN can not be made to adjust their program's taping schedules to suit CS'. Apparently, the child is attending school and her camp asks MN for considerations or a little adjustment so that she wouldn't miss school and can still work, something which was contained in the contract that CS signed with them in the first place. What CS' camp was asking is exactly the provision contained under DOLE. But sad to say, MN prefers to look the other way and violate their own contract.

What's making it more difficult is that CS has other offers from another major network AN where her schedules would not be a problem because the program itself make adjustments' to their talents' school schedules. Thus CS' camp requested MN that she be released from the contract with them. But sadly, they were always given the run around. Months after, when they made a follow-up, CS camp was disgusted that until then, everything hasn't moved at all, and all they heard were delaying tactics. Apparently, MN wouldn't want to release CS, even though they were not giving her any project for so long.

Lately, MN has been on the losing end after a series of exposes and controversies on the way they are handling/mishandling their stars. Some of their talents are now quietly talking how badly they are treated and paid as compared to stars of other networks. Is this why there are more MN talents now who are non-committal at renewing contracts and have been hinting at transferring networks? This we'll get to see in a few weeks.

Construction in Progress

Handsome actor (HA) is truly blessed these days. After a network gave him the biggest break in his career, he now has a stable career and fame that made him a household name. For HA, it is not all looks that worked for him as he is a very talented actor, and thus, deserves all the opportunities given by his network.

The network is pairing off HA with a young actress, but it seems that she is more interested in another actor in real life. Nonetheless, HA really does not need to have a constant screen partner as he can very well carry projects on his own merit. However, behind the spotlight are rumors that HA is someone’s special talent, which is the reason why he is allegedly well taken care of.

The latest twist in the affairs of HA is the involvement of another network executive (NE). NE has allegedly been dealing with a builder for a certain area for a house. NE was very particular with the specifications of the project, hence, the assumption that the construction was for NE’s home. To the surprise of everyone, the project was not for NE, but for the kitchen of HA's home in a plush village.

So, what is the relationship of NE and HA? Is NE merely helping out HA or is there something in return? Is the alleged original benefactor of HA aware of this? Truly, HA is reaping the fruits of his labor as not only one network executive is fretting over him.

When She Gets Hired, I Plan to Resign!

Is the management of a major network (MN) up for a major reorganization? One of the original heads (OH) when the network was launched is threatening to resign. The reason: the network is hiring a consultant (C) with whom OH has some problems with. When OH accepted the offer of MN, the position gave him more control over the direction of the network, its talents and shows. Under his leadership, the network had good productions and managed to lure the big stars under its wings. Unfortunately being new in the game amidst the crazy competition, no matter how hard he worked, the network could not seem to move up the ladder of ratings. Some reasons for such were already beyond his control, anyway.

Meanwhile, C had established a legacy prior to leaving her former network. C was able to make some of her ex-network’s discoveries carve names for themselves. She also had several shows that earned good ratings. Thus, when C moved on, she decided to contribute to the industry by professionalizing  talent development.

Recently, C and OH were part of a team that aimed to develop fresh talents for MN. However, controversy hounded them as some were not happy with the final choices. Nonetheless, the program was able to generate noise and interest. OH seemed fine with the arrangement as C was under the capacity of a consultant, while OH was the head of a department.

Now, that C has allegedly been hired by the network, OH is not comfortable with the development as his issues concern integrity. C has been known in the circle as one who is shrewd and scheming, as was proven in their last project that just concluded. In that project, C made sure that she'll make huge profits for her business which she attached to the project. Likewise, majority of MN people share OH's sentiments that C is not a fair team player.

Will C’s new role run smack into OH's plans for the network? Will OH be relegated to a lower position since C is more senior than him? Incidentally, the top honchos of MN are not keen on accepting his resignation. Hence, the waiting begins. Will MN attempt for a win-win situation or will it drop OH in favor of C or vise versa? In the first place, why did the network decide to hire C anyway? Will C manage to turn around the fate of MN? Again, it’s a waiting game.

Securing His Place in Her Network

An influential network insider (INI) was dragged into a controversy sometime ago, but the flames were immediately put out before it became haywire. The controversy was not the doing of INI, but she was dragged because the parties involved were close to her personally and professionally. Because of INI's  influence, the issue was not played up.

Meanwhile, seasoned actor (SA) has done the rounds of almost all the networks and almost all possible roles in all possible movie and television genre. In short, SA has had a colourful career that is as colourful as his personal life. Earlier, when SA faded out of the limelight, everyone thought it was for good as he seemed bent on retiring from showbiz. But years passed, SA was always lured with good offers for him to return to acting. He repeatedly turned it down, until an offer came that made him decided to return with the family. However, SA got involved in another career controversy that almost made him leave again. But the call of acting and performing was too great, that he decided to stay. The younger generation might not know him anymore, but SA is still so handsome and with a look that seems to defy aging.

What then is the connection between INI and SA? In a network event, SA was seen coming out of the hotel room of INI early morning. SA, regardless of his age is still every colegiala’s dream, and no woman would probably turn him down. INI is not bad looking either. Allegedly, a rumour is going around that SA and INI hooked up for their own personal reasons? SA is with INI so he can be secure in his career with the network, while INI is in there to get back at a very close person who had betrayed her.

A Voice In Need

The lure of show business can be deceiving. One moment, the projects can be overwhelming and the next, there might be none. This young discovery (YD) is now in a quandary as to what is happening to his career. YD is a product of a network’s search for talents to beef up its pool years ago. YD was one of those performers lucky enough to be given the break before the trend of reality shows. In other words, he did not have to enter any house to have his luck and popularity tested. He had talent and a pleasant attitude, and the bosses saw his potential.

YD got his break by acting with the popular young love team of the network. His boyish looks that compliments his cute smile landed him  some tv commercial projects, out-of-town appearances, indie and mainstream movies, stage plays, etc. In fact, he even won in a dancing contest. However, the network did not build him up to be the lead actor. Instead, he was cast in supporting roles. However, that was enough because YD was able to provide a comfortable life for his family. It became too cozy that he bought a house and financed the education of his younger siblings. A family member even gave up his professional career to be the driver of YD.

Things were looking great until YD realized that his last soap already ended half a year ago and his group was no longer called to appear in a weekly show of the network. His lack of projects was jeopardizing the comfortable life of his family that they got used to. YD had to humble himself and "took the bitter pill." He went to the pad of a network executive (NE) and asked if he could be given a project. YD even said he was willing to do anything asked of him. Other pals of NE who were present at that time were surprised at YD's last statement. For it sounded really desperate. NE replied that he would call YD as he was still finalizing the line up of the next soap.

This story is ordinary for people in showbusiness. Unless one is extraordinarily talented or very well-connected connected, no one is indispensable. On the part of the network, its energies seem to be bent on developing the careers of their discoveries from their reality shows more than their homegrown talent search a few years ago. If YD can build a reliable fan base and sustain their interest, then there is no reason why he should not have as many projects. But for now, he might have to rethink his options  to make sure he is not overlooked.

The latest is that YD is now part of two soaps, and was even featured in a magazine. On top of these, YD also decided to resume his education. Has YD finally learned his lesson? Did the visit to NE do the trick? People think that being responsible and diligent that he is, YD shouldn't be lacking in projects.

Beyond the News: the Reporter, the Official, and the Executive

Sometime ago, media personality (MP) was dispatched to cover a tragedy in a province. A prominent public official (PO) of the region apparently got smitten with MP that PO started giving him the exclusives. PO accompanied MP to far-flung places in his region that were hit hardest by the calamity. While other media personnel were holed up in electricity-less hotels, PO invited MP and his crew to his residence. Throughout the coverage, the staff and media from other networks noticed that PO was becoming fond of MP. Other than providing comfortable dwellings, PO also made sure food was delivered to MP and his crew. During their stay at the residence of PO, MP and PO would stay up late talking. Some staff who witnessed the nightly talks said that it lasted until early morning. After the grueling coverage, MP was granted a week’s vacation by his network. But instead of spending his vacation elsewhere, MP returned to the residence of PO.

Nothing would have been noticed except that when MP returned to work after a week, his co-workers noticed he had new gadgets like a laptop, a camera, and clothes. Naturally, rumours  spread quickly. The story alleged that MP and PO had an affair and that the new stuff were given by PO. Furthermore, PO came over to Manila and took MP shopping. The newsroom could not risk such rumors that can ruin the credibility of the network. MP returned the gifts, except for the clothes. However, the department conducted its investigation. Consequently, MP was suspended for two months for the alleged misbehavior. When PO learned of the what happened to MP, he called a powerful female executive (FE) of the network. Soon after, MP's suspension period was shortened, thus overturning the decision of the head of the department (HD).

The story of MP did not end there. After the PO incident, FE ordered that MP would be the one to cover all the activities related to her office. Soon, people began to notice the extra closeness between FE and MP. MP was always around FE's out-of-town coverages and events. While in a province, people saw them come out of a hotel room together, which fueled tonques wagging. FE even asked HD to take it easy on MP. (HD has since left the network and if the interference of the management in disciplining one of its employees is connected to HD’s resignation, people can only speculate.) Since that time, MP seemed to be “untouchable” in the department. Stories about alleged trysts between PO and MP are talked about in hush-hush. MP would be seen allegedly leaving the house of PO early in the morning. Some stories are also circulating, such as MP allegedly receiving certain freebies, such as  the use of vehicle granted only to senior members and a sizable allowance coming from the office of FE.

Most often, the media make good stories, but sometimes, they can be more interesting stories themselves.

Coosome Twosome, Foursome

The cliché states that behind every successful man is a woman. In showbiz lingo, the saying takes a different turn, because truth be told: behind the success of an actor is a powerful gay executive or manager. In the case of this prized official (PO) of a network, most of the talents he handled got very good breaks. That was always a given. From a mere nobody, PO can transform any actor into the hottest talent in the industry. His latest and current "project" is an emerging talent (ET), who has appeared in the major series of the network. ET is definitely gaining more recognition than he did with his previous management.

A few weeks ago, a high level executive (HE) of said network fumed when she learned that PO was conspicuously absent in the network's story conferences. The presence of PO is very crucial in any  meetings because he handles all the major series/telenovelas of the network. Therefore his absence is definitely unwelcome, as he has to be on call to answer for all the major decision-making required. Besides, results of said meetings were to be presented in a big network event a few days after. Apparently, PO left the country without asking permission from his superiors. He joined ET in the Middle East for the network's promotional tour. PO had already been lined up ET in two major projects in the most coveted timeslots of the network.

Also, PO was not alone in the tour, as his close friend (CF), a former talent manager, joined him, too. Before PO got fatally attracted to ET, he was responsible for transforming a non-mainstream actor (NA) into a huge household name that he is today. PO now had to relegate NA because ET is younger, and well, not as “soft” as NA. Thus it was CF who took care of NA. What caught the ire of HE was her finding out that the room assignments had PO and ET in one room, while CF and NA were together in another room. It appeared as if the foursome where on a honeymoon.

HE can only express her disbelief that PO is turning out to be the personal assistant of ET. Unfortunately, HE can only get mad and disgusted, period. She can not really reprimand PO as much as she does her other subordinates. For PO is not considered as a “demi-goddess “ for the network’s soap operas for nothing. If PO leaves, the network's programming will definitely suffer in a big way. HE knew that this incident was not isolated, as it was not the first time that PO left his work to be with ET. The question is: until when will PO's fondness for ET last? The other talents who were previously handled by PO are no longer as popular as the time when PO had them under his loving care. These talents have grown old, lost their hunky appeal, and moved on. Perhaps, ET believes that it is but natural for him to take advantage of every opportunity that lands on his lap. For it is true that since it knocks but once, he might as well hit the ground running, and laugh all the way to the bank. Only and only, while he still savors the perks of being PO's current and favorite flavor.

Protecting Her Image

Did network executive (NE) already ask help from her talent management to calm down singer actress (SA)? Since the past weeks, SA went ballistic over a social networking site. She even went as far as pointing the blame to a specific group responsible for the tirades in her account. 

The disappointing behavior of SA alarmed NE and the network because her behavior might ruin her image, create a negative response from the advertisers, and not attract enough support for her upcoming show. However, SA seems to be familiar with the angle that the specific group is indeed maintained by a certain idol. The said specific group works as a hate brigade and in the process, makes the idol look pitiful, hence gaining more sympathy for him.
