I am not very sure, but i think Ms. Guy had emphysema for a long time because i heard she was always attached to an oxygen... Not sure again was Nora a smoker? kasi that is the main cause of emphysema. kumbaga damaged na ang mga walls ng airsacs sa lungs nya. kaya the lungs can no longer function 100% - so maybe emphysema was the contributing factor to the acute respiratory failure. kumbaga finally bumigay na ang lungs nya. i had a patient with emphysema before. smoker siya for many many years.

Hello. ICU nurse here in the US. I’ll try to simplify… Respiratory failure means there is a very dangerous level of oxygen and carbon dioxide sa arterial blood natin. Very low ang oxygen (O2) and super taas naman ng carbon dioxide (CO2). Eto yung acid-base exchange sa dugo which helps sa normal function of our organs/body. Normal ph is 7.35 to 7.45, pag below 7.35 yan, acidosis tawag. Ang carbon dioxide naman is 35 to 45, pag above 45 acidosis din yan. So if both levels are acidotic, tawag dyan is respiratory acidosis leading to respiratory failure. Acute meaning sudden. Since she also has COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), they may call it as Acute on Chronic Respiratory Failure.
There are different contributing factors to respiratory acidosis/failure: excessive medication/sedation from procedure or overdose, trauma, infection, paralysis, diseases like COPD/emphysema for smokers (matataas usually mga CO2 nito kasi may build-up because di sila normal huminga), old age, etc.
Eto usually symptoms that are exhibited by people who are having respiratory failure. Inadequate ventilation, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, naghihingalo sila either fast or slow breathing. O2 saturation level nila is low 80s and below. Supplemental oxygenation is required via nasal cannula (regular or high-flow), non-rebreather, BiPAP… if these methods fail, mechanical ventilation na ang sunod which is intubation na. Then the machine mechanically assists the patient with their breathing to aid with proper oxygenation sa lungs and sa entire body. Kailangan naka sedate sila for proper delivery ng oxygen to the lungs…
With Nora’s comorbidities like COPD and the cardiovascular diseases, malamang mahihirapan na magfunction all her major organs in the body. Pag they are not in synchrony especially during and after major cardiovascular procedures like angioplasty, cardiopulmonary arrest sets in. Then everything stops. Body succumbs to death.
