DeleteOnly filipinos will tell you you're trying hard to have a british accent. Sometimes you really have to try to adapt the accent so they can understand. Imagine a british person trying to speak in tagalog with a british accent. I'm sure it'll take filipinos time to process. If the british person tries hard to make it sound in a filipino accent, will you then really say the person is trying too hard?
DeleteHi, classmates! I used to work in a call center years ago (as admin, not an agent), and I just wanted to touch on the topic of “acquired” or learned accents.
DeleteWe had accent trainers who helped trainees with regional accents learn to speak in a neutral English accent. We also had accounts with Filipino agents who were fluent in Spanish, Italian, Mandarin, German, etc. During training, they would do mock calls with native speakers. One of them—a German—once remarked how a Filipino agent had a perfect Bavarian accent that you wouldn’t even guess he wasn’t a native speaker. Same with one of our Spanish-speaking agents, who had an acquired Basque accent. Both of them had worked abroad for years, and when they returned to the Philippines, they stayed because they were offered high-paying jobs here and wanted to be with their families.
Anyway, ang haba ng litanya ko… LOL. But what I’m trying to say is this: accents can absolutely be learned! People will understand you better if you can speak their language clearly. So, let’s not be “utak-talangka,” mga bes. Anyone can learn with enough practice, experience, and exposure. Maski kayo, magagawa nyo rin yan.
Grabe naman kayo komo sa experience nyo di nyo na adapt yung accent eh sasabihin nyo yung iba peke atvtrying hard. I live in Switzerland, in the French canton, and I can speak in French like most people here do. :)
DeleteHindi ka nakatira sa abroad, same sa probinsya. We adapt sa surroundings natin, if people around you talk that way. Mas proper na gamitin ang accent and diction nila, to communicate properly. Ganun din sa probinsya, kung bisaya kausap mo for years at doon ka naninirahan, pag nag bisaya ka kahit di mo salita yan talaga, pag nag salita ka nang bisaya, gagayahin mo accent and diction nila. That’s proper and fair.

Hindi OA. PAG nasa abroad ka kelangan you adapt to their accent otherwise Di.ka nila maintindihan. So you tried to master the accent. Yung MGA ANAK ko when we migrated to the US pinagtatawanan Sila sa accent sa pinoy, di naintidihan. Nag advice yung Pinoy titser na nagtuturp na ng MatagAl. To be able to get the accent kelangan continuously speak English. Don't shift 2 different languages to adjust the tongue.

DeleteMy husband and I have been in Singapore for 20+ years, and our child was born here. None of us speaks Singlish or has their accent. When our teenager was younger, we heard him changing his accent to Filipino when talking to our helper then, or to a local accent when chatting with his local friends. His preschool classmates used to question the way he speaks, so maybe he changed it to adapt and help them understand what he was saying. However, he will revert to how we want him to speak, using complete sentences, when talking to us. I don’t hear him changing his accent now, even with his friends.
Ang gusto ko lang sabihin, nasa tao po yan. Hindi ibig sabihin na dahil lumipat ka sa ibang bansa, hindi mo kontrol o wala kang choice kaya “nakukuha” mo ang local accent.

Kasi before, if the customer preferred speaking in Tagalog, we could switch if it made them more comfortable. I guess it really depends on the company and the account? My call center experience was more than 10 years ago, so things might’ve changed since then.

Not sure what you meant by that, but just to clarify—the agents I mentioned (whose accents were pretty impressive even to native speakers) had actually lived and worked in the EU before moving back to the PH. One of them, the Spanish-speaking guy, was almost 60 already but he couldn’t pass up a job offer paying over 70k a month—this was more than a decade ago—just for using his Spanish fluency in the BPO industry.

DeleteEvery time may naririnig akong Pinoy na ganito magsalita at obvious naman na hindi talaga nila first language ang English, naaalala ko yung girl na may famous line na "I'm an Englisher halata". Okay lang naman gamitin yung neutral accent or Filipino-English accent lalo na kung kapwa mo Pinoy ang kausap mo eh. No need magpabida kasi hindi mo kinaangat yan sa kapwa mo Pinoy. Most Filipinos can speak English so it doesn't really make you special.

ReplyDeleteSa true lang, mas gusto ng mga banyaga ang Filipino accent natin kapag nagsasalita tayo ng English kasi our accent sounds "neutral". Minsan maski kapwa nila (example: Boston accent vs Southern, Texan accent) hindi pa rin nila maintindihan ang isa't isa. Kaya Mareng Bangs, hindi nakakabawas ng pagka-"British" ang hindi magkaroon ng British accent.
ReplyDeleteLOL there's nothing neutral about Filipino accent. Filipinos have a cadence that's different from native English speakers. Kahit yung mga conyo who try to imitate a valley girl accent are still obviously foreign to a native English speaker's ears. Boston, Southern accents, etc. are easy to understand. It's the Scottish, Scouse, and Geordie accents you'll need Google translate for.
DeleteSister ko nurse sa UK, after about 6 years there, aba, British accent na. Nakakairita and cringe at first but I learned na sa hospital, nahihirapan daw siyang intindihin ng majority if she doesn't have their accent and it's crucial for her to learn it.
ReplyDeleteThis is an example of an actual experience. Maybe some don't get to acquire the accent but yung majority, nakukuha nila. It's actually a 'you' issue if nabibwisit ka. Especially if never ka namang nandoon sa position nila. Also some people are really susceptible to acquiring the accent. Yung isang friend ko naman kahit local dialect na dito sa probinsya eh nag-British accent na rin. Nakakalokang pakinggan but it is what it is.
May sarili shang accent. Hindi Pinoy accent and hindi rin British accent. I think asa borderline sha na pinag aaralan nya yung British accent pero di pa na convert fully yung accent nya. Its normal naman when you move to a different country, nakaka adapt ka sa accent ng mga naririnig mo and nakakausap mo esp yung husband nya parang di naman ata marunong magtagalog. So shempre ma aadapt nya yun. Yun nga lang, ang weird nya pakinggan sana natural nalang wag mashado ipilit

ReplyDeleteIt’s true that you don’t really acquire the accent if you came to the UK when you’re already an adult BUT you still learn to quickly adapt to your environment such that when you speak to the locals (English people) you tend to speak with an accent too. Through many years of listening to and speaking with the accent, nakukuha mo na din accent nila. I have been living in the UK since 2004 and I already speak with an accent even when I am not speaking with a local anymore. Hindi ko na matuwid dila ko 😂 Tama din sinabi ng iba dito. You NEED to have the accent to be fully understood. I used to speak with an american accent before I came here. Hindi nila ako maintindihan! I had to repeat myself multiple times. So I had to adapt.
HOWEVER, since I didn’t grow up here, I don’t really speak with the natural accent as how my kids do because they were all born and raised here. Parang ganyan ang accent ko kay Bangs. Hindi natural di ba? Hindi na magbabago yan.
Ang haba na ng sinabi ko lol Huwag na kayo mainis sa accent ni Bangs. Whilst I not a fan, I won’t call her OA or TH. It’s just her adapting to her environment. Her geo tagging is another issue altogether, though. That’s unusual. Sya lang mahilig gumawa nyan 😆

ReplyDeleteFilipinos who can't speak fluent English are the first ones to ridicule other Filipinos who appear to have developed one. Why? Because they are jelous and bitter. Why can't you just let people speak how the want to speak? Why do some Filipinos here in this comment section are so bothered about it? Hindi mo ba naintindihan? Ikamamatay mo ba? Filipinos in general are the greastest crabs. That's why when I was working abroad, I preferred to hang out with Chinese and Indonesians rsther than Filipinos. Atleast other Asias support fellow Asians but Filipinos? They will always spread chiskis aboutbyou na walang basis
ReplyDeleteYung mga galit madalas sila rin yung di naman nakatira overseas and experienced first hand situation na ganito. Parang naging hobby na lang ng karamihan yung manghila pababa, mang-invalidate ng achievements ng mga tao, mang-okray. It's no wonder na ganito na kalala ang society natin.

ReplyDeleteHer accent is fine, she’s not trying to have a brit accent. Her accent is filipino pa rin. Usually mga kabayan dito sa UK ang mismong TH sa accent kahit mali mali na ang accent at grammar, push pa din. Pero yung kay Bangs okay naman.
