MMFF 2024 Awards Controversy, Who's Responsible?

For the past five decades, moviegoers look forward to the last weeks of December. This is the time that cinemas are required to show only Philippine movies, thus, effectively blocking off foreign movies for a month. The limited number of movies shown in cinemas assures a good share in box-office receipts of the participating films.

Given their love for movies, Filipinos look forward to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) annually. In the past 50 years, the MMFF is often marred by controversies. For example, the first issue is that a non-showbiz group runs the MMFF. Second, decisions on awards always raise questions. Third, a discrepancy exists between multi-awarded films and box-office hits.

MMFF 2024 has not escaped issues. On the one hand, luminaries in lead roles were not even nominated, whereas newbies were in the list. Subsequently, the winners were predictable. On the other hand, certain films hardly had nominations or none at all. No nomination, of course, means no chance for any MMFF award. Netizens who were watching the live broadcast consistently posted disagreements, even to the extent of accusing a production firm of allegedly bribing to get awards.

Worse, rumors in the grapevine are pinpointing to the cause of the messy handling of the awards. Allegedly, a personality in the entertainment industry strongly influenced decisions on who gets which award. Despite this controversy, the MMFF has undergone many intrigues in the past and none of which has stopped the festival.

  1. Ito yung first mmff in quite some time na madaming big stars talaga. And with that balik controversies din kasi lahat expecting mag best picture o humakot ng awards. Lagi namang ganyan sa Pinas ever since kaya impossible ng magkaron ng guild or academy kasi poor sportsmanship dito. Tapos what's worse e mga taga industry pa ang nagsisiraan. Pag parade of stars ang babait at masaya lahat tapos after awards night madaming bitter.

    1. I agree. Poor sportsmanship and corruption din. Remember the Take it Take it controversy decades ago?

    2. 324 tamang tama esp the poor sportsmanship. Pikon

    3. Napanood mo ba? Parang nasa perya sila sa sobrang low quality ng production so may ripple effect na yan na pati yung award itself may doubt because they did not present tha awards well sa mga nanonood

    5. How about yung poor production? Yung mga mishaps?

      Delete
    6. I agree sa mga nagsasabing poor quality yung stage. Parang pang brgy program lang Di man lang nageffort.

    7. poor sportsmanship, that sums it up. tapos na yung awards show pero until now may controversy. mga talangka mentality talaga ang mga pinoy.

  2. If you join a film festival or awards show dapat tanggap mo ang results win or lose. Only in the Philippines talaga na laging galit after the awards night.

    1. Totoo and di naman questionable yung credentials ng mga jury, andon pa nga si John Arcilla eh alangan naman tolerate nya if may naganap na lutuan, JJR din andun.

      Delete
    2. exactly! gusto na lang ng mga veterans dito eh sila sila na lang mananalo. eh kung deserving naman yung newbie. sa Hollywood nga ang daming veteran na hindi nananalo like glenn close and annette benning pero you won't hear anything from them

      Delete
    3. ika nga give chance to others ang young,di yung komo veteran sayo lagi pabor

  3. literal naging perya feels

    1. Nominations ata yung kinekwestyun.

  6. predictable but for the most part, deserving winners - especially in the acting department.

  8. Can't expect politicians to be movie experts. They probably assigned it to a certain who's in the business to take care of it.

  9. Sore losers. Yan lang masasabi ko.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Paano magiging sore losers yung d nominated?

      Delete
    2. 4:39 Hindi nominated? Eh di talo. Better luck next time. It is what it is. That simple.

      Delete

  10. Ano ba kasing controversial about this MMFF? Yung di nanalo si Aga? For me, mas malaking "robbed" yung di nanalo si Zig Dulay. Biruin mo all the major awards nakuha ng Green Bones tapos di nanalo as Best Director? How could the director of MFY won over him? MFY sucks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hindi sa hindi nanalo si Aga. Deserve naman talaga si Dennis pero Hindi man lang even na-nominate si Aga??

      Delete
    2. Nagtanong ka pa eh sayo na nga nanggaling ang isang example about Best Director oh di ba controversies naman talaga na halos lahat ng award nakuha ng Green Bones pero hindi ang Best Director not just about Aga itself.

      Delete
    3. kulang sa voting para manominate, They can ask John Arcilla, member siya ng Committee

      Delete
Nakakaloka

      Delete
    5. Mfy sucks halatang di nakanood eh. Pusta ATBI lang napanood neto

      Delete
  11. Sour graping kc yung mga di nananalo. For the non-nomination naman ni Aga okay kang yun wla ng dapat patunayan si Aga isa na cyang icon

    1. It's for his performance. Not him as a star

    2. hindi naman yung buong filmography ang basehan ng award na yan. it's a film festival, so malamang it's based sa Isang pelikula lang. dami kasi dunung dunungan dito nagkaroon lang ng access sa google at TikTok

  12. Kailan kaya matututo ang mga Pilipino to accept defeat no.

    ReplyDelete

  14. Kahit Naman sa Oscars dami nagkuquestion sa result. Ganyan talaga kapag contest, May panalo at May talo.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Agree 💯 halos lahat ng award giving bodies dito walang credibility! Mostly popularity awards!

      Delete
    2. Not only in Pinas, even in Oscar people start to doubt their credibility.

      Delete
    3. Yup.

  16. Kailanang kailangan talaga nating mga Pilipino ang special subject that teaches REAL humility and sportsmanship as early as grade school.

  17. Pilipino talaga always poor sport. Mapa sports, pageants, film awards, etc. Pag di nanalo laging bitter.

    3. I mean, pinanood mo ba o basher ka lang?

    4. Magaling naman talaga si Ruru sa Green Bones 4: 39 PM. Deserve nya ang panalo.

      Delete

      Delete

      Delete
    8. 4:39 , what is your point kung Sid Lucero sya? I don’t get it, enlighten me🙄

Palaging confrontational, hysterical, etc.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Kung overrated si Vilma , why did she win last year sa When I met you in Tokyo. I’m not saying dapat si Vilma ang dapat nanalo .

      Delete
    3. 1:38 Madami din naman hindi agree sa pagkapanalo nya last year. In other words, hindi na bago na palagi kinu-question ang result ng awarding ng MMFF. So live with it.

    4. Hysterical of all season🤣

      Delete
    5. Ditto, I thought ako lang nakapansin, same pa rin pag atake sa scene, like she is still acting in the 80’s mga pa hysterical acting is acting na.

  21. That's why I prefer box office than awards. At least if box office, people watch and judge the movie. Good or bad. While awards? Even in Oscar people starts to doubt their credibility

    ReplyDelete
    Replies

      Delete
    4. 10:20 ok ka lang? Winning an Oscar is the most prestigious award , every actors dream to be recognized by their peers so wag mo i compare award giving bodies ng pinas marred by their credibility sa Oscar, malayo. If you prefer box office eh di wow, hindi lahat ganoon taste, some look for good quality film.

      Delete
    5. Oscars and The Palme d'Or/Cannes Film Festival ang mga legit na film awards and they don't based the nomination kung blockbuster ba ang movie.

What do you expect MMFF remember take it take it

    ReplyDelete
10 films are just too many; and it is handle by MMDA. ang daming taga showbiz sa gobyerno, pero hindi pa rin mabago, MMDA pa rin. sana may subsidy at less taxes
