Before I became a mom, I also thought that not all moms can breastfeed. However, after attending prenatal seminars and giving birth, both doctor and lactation consultant said all moms are capable. It’s a matter of proper and consistent latching. And yes, they said it’s normal that first few days, milk produced is very minimal. I’ve experienced all these and I was fortunate enough that a lactation consultant was doing the rounds while I was struggling again to latch my new born baby at that time, so I was taught the correct way of latching.
Breastfeeding needs a lot of patience (especially during the first few weeks of learning correct latching), endurance (it’s very painful during the first few weeks, more so if you were doing it wrong initially), and work, especially if you’re doing both latching and expressing excess milk. If you were able to breastfeed, then that’s good. However, it does not make moms less of a mother, nor does it lessen their love for their baby if they were not able to breastfeed. I always say this to first time moms, stress affects milk production. If it’s stressing them to breastfeed, it will also stress the baby and they will be missing out on the joy of motherhood because of it. IT IS OK to give formula, regardless if you can breastfeed or not. Babies grow fast, so if you cannot breastfeed, focus on other ways to bond with your baby, make great memories, and savour each moment with your baby.
