Eliana Atienza: Taking a Stand

Images courtesy of Facebook: Kuya Kim Atienza, LinkedIn

Taking a stand on an important issue and facing its consequences is nothing new to the Filipino. Who would have thought that when a young Filipina student attended an anti-Israel encampment it would result in academic sanction?

University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) student, Eliana Atienza, daughter of Host/Athlete Kim Atienza, participated in an anti-Israel encampment on campus some time ago. Early this month, the university decided to dismantle the camp, which had occupied a certain part of the campus green.

Atienza was among the six UPenn students who were part of the protesters in the encampment. In a NY Post article, Atienza claimed that she was left ‘homeless’ after her participation in the encampment.

Nonetheless, her father, Kim Atienza, reiterates that their daughter is an adult capable of making her own decisions. Furthermore, she is not pro-Hamas or anti-Semitic. She is anti-war and anti-genocide, regardless of which side. Dad Kim stresses that despite what happened, they are proud that Eliana made a stand.

    2. 2:13 - that’s what happened when Israel gave Gaza back to Gazans many years ago but theyvoted Hamas to govern Gaza. Hamas is a terrorist group. They need to release the hostages — when Oct 7 happened, Israel doesnt have presence in Gaza, now ofcourse they are in Gaza for war.

    4. Kala mo titigil ang israel. Kahit noon pang walang hostages, taon taon yan atake nila.

    5. Panahon ni Moses cge. Eh babalikan ko ang lupang yun na may nakatira na for thousands of years, dun na kanununuan nila, basta basta mo nlng papaalisin? Loobin bahay nila and claim this is your property? Patayin sila kasi ayaw nilang umalis? Ok ka lang?

    6. Hamas is a resistance group.

    7. Israel is full of greed for the land. They wanted more than what was given to them. They treated the inhabitants cruelly. Savages. Makikita mo til this very day sinasakop nila ang west bank and gaza, treating the palestinians like animals. They left Gaza alone kuno, retreated their army, a blatant lie kasi patuloy pa din control nila, sa basic needs lang, water electricity etc ay pinuputol whenver they want to. Palestinians are not free to move freely in and out of the territory. Hamas is actually the brave ones to retaliate and fight for their people’s right.

      Delete
    8. Hamas taking the hostages purpose was the hope for their prisoners to be released. Israel has indiscrimenately arrested, detained, tortured palestinians without even a trial. Torture is a big NO, even to the worst criminals. How much more these so called prisoners include children and women. Giving them long sentences for alleged (usually petty) crimes.

      Delete
    9. The release of the hostages was offered many times for an exchange, a cease fire or the release of prisoners. But israel had refused, not just once! Because at this point they dont care about the hostages anymore. They want them all dead and they have already started building a sea port for their project to begin.

      Delete
    10. With israel advanced technology they cant find the hostages. They bomb places where the possibilty of the hostages being there is high. But they dont care. They just want to get rid of the people and take the land for thrmselves. This is obviously a crime!

    14. Israel is not in Gaza para sakupin ang Gaza. Israel is in Gaza to eliminate and dismantle hamas. PM Netanyahu said they are not interested in occupying Gaza, they just need to remove Hamas because Israel’s safety is at stake. Some here say, after leaving Gaza to Gazans years ago, Israel still control Gaza by treating them poorly - not giving them food, power, etc. Uhhmm, it us NOT Israel’s job to feed Gazans. And why would you feed the enemy — people who openly declare that they will kill the jews?

      Delete

Israel wont stop until they dismantle hamas because their people’s security is at stake. Imagine having a neighbor who profess openly to kill you if they get a chance…just wish you have the iron dome of Israel.

    4. 11:27 and history justifies murder, massacre? Whatever the history was, there’s no justification for massacre. Now, is Israel’s response to the Oct 7 justified? Absolutely! Hamas was calling for war when they did the Oct7 massacre. Why dont you call Hamas to release the hostages instead of calling Israel to stop the war?

    5. MAGTIGIL KA! I have both Palestinian and Jewish friends and I live in the middle east. Never ever tell me na prinovoke ng hamas ang israel. I dont wanna elaborate further pero i strongly suggest wag magpapaniwala sa mainstream media. Just because we have close ties sa Israel eh goodie goodie na sila sa atin ano po opo?

    6. 1:35 lols obviously i do have a stand. And true, there are two sides of the coin. However in this case, i agree with Israel more. Kawawa lang ang civilians. But isipin mo, Israel asked the civilians to leave the area they are going to attack… which military in the world does that? Israel has to eliminate Hamas because otherwise Israel civilians will be in danger. Ofcourse they will protect their citizens. And people say, Gazans have nowhere to go…because Arab countries dont want them. Would you want terrorists in your country? Hell no!!!

      Delete
    7. 12:27 Anong lahat ng Arab countries? Stop spreading lies. Ang daming Palestinian refugees sa Jordan and Syria. And for your information since gullible ka at halatang paniwalain ka sa propaganda ng Israel, hindi pinili ng mga Palestinians na manirahan sa Gaza at West Bank. Sapilitan silang pinaalis sa ancestral lands nila. Lahat ng lumaban, pinatay.

      Delete
    8. 2:50 Binasa mo ba yung comment mo before posting? Sinabi mong there's no justification for massacre and then followed it up by saying Israel is justified in their response to Oct 7.

      Delete
    9. 2:50 ikaw yung mga taong nagsimula ang narrative since oct. 7.. While the people on the right side of history knows already that its started in NAKBA year 1948.

Besides Hamas is a resistance group they are defending the Gaza sa ginagawang atrocities ng Israel sa kanila hindi lang simula noong oct. 7 but from establishment of since late 80s.

The purpose of protesting is to disrupt the norm, so yes there are myriad of ways on how poeple here in the US (and other countries) are showing up for Palestine liberation because of the interconnected of the social issue that is happening in Haiti, Congo and the many other countries experiencing genocide and apartheid. It was never about the hostages and it did not start on 10/7, it’s been a 76 years of illegal occupation of Israelis on Palestenian land. Anyway, kudos to her for standing 10 toes down.
