Why would UP conduct a course on Taylor Swift? Why would taxpayers subsidize this? We don't have to spend a semester "learning' her strategies or technique or style. First of all, ang babaw ng songs nya. It's relatable and catchy, pero walang depth. Second, she caters to teenagers - the most impressionable market. Don't get me wrong. I like Taylor Swift. She is an artist because she can write her own songs and play instruments and can carry a tune. But for us to devote a course for her ay sobrang OA.
I think it'll focus more on how she was able the break through the glass ceiling, being one of the richest today. Lalo na with her background and ang songs nya nga na "simple" lang at "mababaw" but they catapulted her to mega success. It may also be about society at large and why we've given TS so much sh*t (like what we do in this thread) that made her a billionaire at her age for simply doing exactly what she likes to do.
It's not because she's the best artist/singer in the world, but because there's something to learn in how much success and influence she has worldwide.

Its would probably be discussed in this course how someone like her with a basic voice and simple lyrics became a worldwide phenomenon. People don’t always look for profound or life changing music. They want to be entertained and they want something to relate to. You may not be her target audience but she was able to reach a variety of fans through her different eras and genres. Shes constantly evolving as she grows older and so is her music. As a fan i feel like I grew up with her; starting with school crushes then dealing with real heartbreak then being pressured to be a certain kind of woman etc. Good for you if you have exquisite taste in music but its unfair to brush her off bec of a single line from a song that she wrote 15 years ago.

DeleteAs an alumna, please it's not that deep. Maraming GE subjects sa UP na about special interests. And for those inclined, there is something to be learned not just about TS as a person/artist but also her cultural impact, how her stardom relates to societal norms, her musical influences, etc. Di ko gets yung mga g na g sa subject na to, it's not as if mandatory syang i-take ng students.

Even in one of my humanities classes, not sure which one kasi ang tagal na, nagdidiscuss kami ng songs. Naalala ko diniscuss namin yun narda, spoliarium, etc. In UP naman hndi naman puro teacher ang nagsasalita. Madalas it really is a discussion unless na lang subject na facts talaga such as math, science, etc. pero yun ganto, the teacher just leads the class to discuss. Even in essay type exams minsan wala naman ineexpect na definite answer ang prof. May essay type exams na talagang gusto lang tignan how you see things and how you’re able to justify your answer.

DeleteI once did a paper on the popularity of novelty songs and got high marks and complements from my professor for my analysis. This course reminds of that, although Taylor's scale is much bigger even though she's not the best singer or songwriter out there.

ReplyDeleteWhy would UP conduct a course on Taylor Swift? Why would taxpayers subsidize this? We don't have to spend a semester "learning' her strategies or technique or style. First of all, ang babaw ng songs nya. It's relatable and catchy, pero walang depth. Second, she caters to teenagers - the most impressionable market. Don't get me wrong. I like Taylor Swift. She is an artist because she can write her own songs and play instruments and can carry a tune. But for us to devote a course for her ay sobrang OA.

Lalo na with her background and ang songs nya nga na "simple" lang at "mababaw" but they catapulted her to mega success. Truth is, pinag aaralan sya in universities abroad because of her business model and marketing savvyness. She is the only artist who became a billionaire through her music alone. Other universities also offer courses on her song writing, in a way using her and the lyrics of her songs, to pique the interest of students to the works of other poets. They are trying to connect the old to present-- how the old works of dead poets long gone can still be relevant now. Those who are triggered by a TS elective obviously don't get the genius of it. Their ego must be so EASILY bruised by the success of a woman who aren't their idol. Actually you don't have to be a fan to actually recognize her feat. Anywaay, gawa na lang din kayo ng kanta hehehe aaaand Goodluck with that HAHAHAHAHA
ReplyDelete4:45, true. Di kasi matanggap ng mga haters dito na yung "mediocre" singer/songwriter eh super successful at gumugulong sa pera habang yung "very talented" idols nila ay ngangey. Tatawagin pang uto-uto ang fans dahil walang mauto ang idol nila. Mga bitter.
