Hindi yan masama and as i have said alas nya. Pero in terms of entertainment and showmanship, alam kong nag upgrade naman na sya pero kahit ano pang pakulo nya, meh pa din for me. Kaya mejo OA na pag aralan sya. Ano pag aaralan nila jan..she wears short skirt i wear tshirt?!

    1. Kaeklayan lang pagiging girl next door nya. Shes a werewolf in sheeps clothing.

    2. theres something about the meh moves, songs, songwriting that made her famous. perhaps, ang relatable kasi? same goes sa mga businessman na wala namang kakaibang ginawa per yumaman, pinagaaralan din baman yan sa klase

    3. “Ano pag aralan nila jan” - Bakit mo pag pinu-problema ang ibang tao na gusto siyang pag-aralan? Mas OA ka sa totoo lang. Di ka naman pinipilit na pag-aralan siya.

Her music is not that deep or profound. I prefer Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Jill Sobule, Alanis Morissette, Nightwish, Jinjer, and Archenemy. TS is just famous.

Sorry, Yael. Fan ako ng Sponge Cola for your lyricism. She can't reach high notes atsaka ipit pa boses niya. Ikaw naman, Yael, you can do falsettos pero you tend to oversing po and your voice is so big, dapat marunong ka mag control ng voice mo.

The reason people listen to you and Taylor is that you both play the guitar.

    5. 11:07 inferness elite mga pinakikinggan mo. Nabasa ko palang Tori Amos and Fiona apple Ik ur the cool girl hs in 90s. Same tayo ng genre.

      Delete
    6. She's a triumph or strong marketing and good PR. Pero talent-wise, no. Her songwriting is nowhere near the Beatles, Prince nor Queen, her notes are nowhere near Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin nor Mariah in their heydays, her dance moves are far from Britney and Beyonce, and overall concert performance is far from the likes of MJ, Madonna who are true showbiz musical icons.

White girl with guitar and a ton of time to doodle. #realtalk

I don't get the hype too except that she dated a lot of guys hehe. Well she looks pleasant tho.

    8. Sorry never liked her. Something about her that is off.

Susme these universities, baon na sa utang ang GenZ at Gen Alpha, hoe exactly will they affords homes of their own that start at 5million and kickstarr business capital pero ang sahod eh minimum wage?

Di nyo ikayayaman yan oi! Tigilan nyo na yan!

    10. Its would probably be discussed in this course how someone like her with a basic voice and simple lyrics became a worldwide phenomenon. People don’t always look for profound or life changing music. They want to be entertained and they want something to relate to. You may not be her target audience but she was able to reach a variety of fans through her different eras and genres. Shes constantly evolving as she grows older and so is her music. As a fan i feel like I grew up with her; starting with school crushes then dealing with real heartbreak then being pressured to be a certain kind of woman etc. Good for you if you have exquisite taste in music but its unfair to brush her off bec of a single line from a song that she wrote 15 years ago.

      Delete
Tingnan mo yung Taylor version di ganun kaganda.

  2. Swifties paki enlighten nga ako pls, ano bang matutunan ng ordinaryong mamamayan sa TS subject?.. No bashing ha. Kasi parang napapaisip ako kung bakit nagkaganito ang UP...

      Delete
    4. Kailangan kumita ng UP, kayo naman.

I would have extended it to studying other pop icons per decade. Beyonce, Kylie Minogue, Britney, MJ, Prince, Cher, Madonna. Tingin ko very limiting si TS. And at some point, pare-pareho tunog ng music nya.

      Delete
    5. Paano magbenta ng dugo at kidney to afford TS concerts, ganyan. Charot!

      Delete
  3. Many people don't understand na its not about the costume, her relationships. Taylor has alot of facets na pwedeng pagaralan. Her marketing/advertising strategy. Her legal actions towards her ex label deals, the move to rerecord her songs (there is legalities behind it). Her art of composing songs, the poetry, style, etc. Her choreography is also a firm of art.

      Delete
    2. Yes. I agree with Yael. He’s making a lot of sense. It’s like studying Shakespeare pero of the current generation . Also it’s time to make analysis how a simple person makes millions and billions of dollars. There is a study in US now on how Taylor Swift brand is becoming phenomenal. It’s time for Filipino to incorporate practical subjects.

      Delete

      Delete
    4. May ganitong issue? TS is not even a Pinoy, let the US or the Americans deal with this.

      Delete
    5. True. Biggest star today so lahat dyan from marketing, lyrics na patok sa tao, business, etc.. Got no problem with it, and yes Martin kamote lalaki ako.

And it’s not just about the songs, lahat yan, business, marketing, the works.

      Delete
    7. 9:01 — that’s basically ang isa sa pag-aaralan. Yung marketing, strategies, influence, etc. Study the economic impact of her albums, concerts, etc. TS has Singapore as her sole Asian stop and SG will be cashing in lots of revenue coz of the wave of fans that will be flying there this March.

Household names ba sila Ryan Tedder and Sia? They don’t have the reach that Taylor has.

      Delete

      Delete
    9. 10:04 huh? Studying TS is like studying shakespeare? One of my favorite is shakespeare sonnet 29 so ano equivalent niyan song ni TS in this current generation?

      Delete
    10. 2:15 Shakespeare was a prolific writer, Taylor swift you can say the same based on the number of hits she generated. TS and WS are not comparable but if there is enough interest in her music i don’t see any reason to not study it. It’s called art appreciation. Hindi lang high brow Ang pwedeng aralin.

      Delete
    11. 10:35 it’s an elective, meaning if interested ka you can take it but not a prerequisite to get a degree. That’s the point of an elective, to learn something that is outside of your chosen course, para maging well rounded ka lang. I’m sure an opm and TS elective can co-exist.

      Delete
    12. Dude, her songs are NOWHERE near Shakespeare, who must be turning in his grave now.

She's a branding and marketing phenomenon, I agree. Pero please lang, Shakespeare?!? I'll wait 30 years kung umabot ang longevity niya like Madonna, then maybe she's worth a class.

      Delete

      Delete
    15. 2:15 Kung totoong favorite at naaral mo na si Shakespeare, dapat alam mong BAKYA rin sya noong panahon nya, just like TS seems to you now. Kasi Shakespeare wrote in English for the masses when that time French was the language of the upper class. Sus, halatang di ka rin nag-aral 🙄

      Delete
    16. Shakespeare: Star-crossed lovers

      TS: Starbucks lovers... ay mali!

      Delete

      Delete
    18. Ang point ko 1:12 is yung body of work ni Shakespeare is not comparable kay Taylor and no di bakya tingin ko kay Taylor I even like some of her songs pero yung pagpilitan na she's this generations Shakespeare. Oa na yan

      Delete
    19. 3:17, sabihin mo, di ka talaga nakinig sa English class o hindi talaga naituro nang maayos sa inyo ang body of work ni Shakespeare. Baka pinabasa lang or pinag-skit lang kayo ng gawa nya without historical understanding of who he really was back then.

3:32, my point is, Shakespeare was only appreciated yearsssss after he died. Dati, considered syang "pangmada" at "mababaw". Sana basahin nyo ulit yung Romeo and Juliet para malaman nyo tungkol yun sa early teenagers (check nuo age nila, baka nga di nyo pa alam na may "naganap" na between them na "mabilisan" lang despite their age) na love sick.

      Delete

  4. Anyare sa UP? Pag-aralan si TS? Seriously???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, because she's making a social impact not just on the cultural side (pop music) but also on the economic/business and sociological aspects. Try to think of it as not just being Taylor Swift but the movement itself. As a UP alumnus, I take this as more than just about talking about TS but more on the thinking processs needed to understand how she's making a dent in today's world.

Palagi nyong tanong "Para saan ba ang inaaral sa school (e.g. Algebra)?" kasi di nyo makita yung use in everyday life. Tapos pag ganitong everyday life na nga ang pinag-uidapan, nag-zoom in lang sa isang pop icon, ayaw pa rin?

      Delete
    2. 9:12 LOL There are far better people to study than Taylor Swift based on the criteria you've given, especially Filipinos who have given back to our country AND have actual contribution to our culture. Ni ayaw nga ni Taylor Swift mag-concert dito eh. Just say you all just wanna copy that US university doing the same thing, and that you're all still stuck with that colonial mindset.

      Delete

      Delete
    4. This is beyond Taylor Swift. It’s more on the cultural impact of famous artists like her.

      Delete
    5. Obviously yung karamahan surface lang ang tinignan when they saw this news about Taylor Swift. People, the elective course is not about Taylor’s life! It’s an analysis of her impact sa business, etc. Ginamit lang din ang pangalan niya for this course because she is the top artist of the moment. If it was, for example, Michael Jackson, then gagamitin din nila name ni MJ. Jeez

      Delete

    7. Nung nagka-sexuality course with Margie Holmes sa UPD, gowrah lahat! Support! At least may pakinabang!

Hindi nag-aaral sa UP Diliman or 2.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I thinkt they're not going to analyze each of her songs, per se. It's more on how come that her songs make it that big when, sabi nyo nga, there are other better written songs out there? How does that reflect society nowadays? Yun kasi ang pag-uusapan sa klase.

      Delete

I'd put her study in Business Management and Economics. Not in the Arts.

      Delete
    3. 7:53 pwede din pagusapan ang pagkasexist towards her. like yael said, even spongecola has songs about their exes but they’re not being belittled for it.

      Delete

    5. 11:39 akala ko tuloy inalis na ang PI 100 in recent times kaya sabi nya no to life and works of rizal ang UP. On another note, I took a second course and I had to get a subject description of PI 100 para macredit for rizal na subject.

    7. Luh. Naintindihan nyo ba ang Life and Works of Jose Rizal? Kasi kung oo, alam nyong di sya makabayan. Isa syang maka-Espanya.

  7. Hindi gets yung economical

If media lang din pag-uusapan, why not SoKor's Hallyu wave tutal Asians din sila at keri i-replicate dito yung pagiging culturally proud yet advanced nila?

      Delete
    5. Exactly! From Martin Escudero’s comment, it’s not surprising bakit di siya sikat. He needs this course to keep himself relevant in showbiz.

    6. Yes, hotels and restaurants were full during her concerts, people from other states travelled to her concerts spending their savings, stimulating the US economy because billions were actually spent.People just want to have a great time and are willing to spend for it.It saved and revived so many businesses.

    3. Mediocrity is subjective. What's mediocre to you may seem excellent to someone else. So who are you to tell us what is mediocre and what is not?

      Delete
    4. You should listen to her last 2 albums Folklore and Evermore. The lyricism in those albums are not mediocre.

      Delete
    5. Lol- mababaw impact eh eto pinag uusapan sa isang tsimisan site like fp.

      Delete
    6. 10:44 Tori Amos is not mainstream and frankly quite depressing at times. You may not like TS but the fact na sikat siya means her songs resonate to people. Anong gagawin mo sa malalim na lyrics if only a few people get it or are interested?

      Delete
Haha. Salamat naman at kalmado ka. I respect your opinion.

  10. As an alumna, please it's not that deep. Maraming GE subjects sa UP na about special interests. And for those inclined, there is something to be learned not just about TS as a person/artist but also her cultural impact, how her stardom relates to societal norms, her musical influences, etc. Di ko gets yung mga g na g sa subject na to, it's not as if mandatory syang i-take ng students.

    1. Kun alam lang nila how some classes in UP are held maiintindihan nila why this would be an ok class. Even in one of my humanities classes, not sure which one kasi ang tagal na, nagdidiscuss kami ng songs. Naalala ko diniscuss namin yun narda, spoliarium, etc. In UP naman hndi naman puro teacher ang nagsasalita. Madalas it really is a discussion unless na lang subject na facts talaga such as math, science, etc. pero yun ganto, the teacher just leads the class to discuss. Even in essay type exams minsan wala naman ineexpect na definite answer ang prof. May essay type exams na talagang gusto lang tignan how you see things and how you’re able to justify your answer.

    2. Humanidades 1, Isa sa mga lessons namin ang American influences sa band culture ng Pilipinas, kasama sa artists we discussed that week was Urbandub/Cueshe (as Cebu grown artists) and Kamikazee/ PNE
People talk a lot about this and that sa UP without experiencing being a student there. Also, that's just 1 subject na publicized kasi TS eh, but hello we have other subjects that discuss Filipino artists. CL100 for example tackles works by Nick Joaquin and Edith Tiempo among others.

  23. I once did a paper on the popularity of novelty songs and got high marks and complements from my professor for my analysis. This course reminds of that, although Taylor's scale is much bigger even though she's not the best singer or songwriter out there.

  25. It’s sad how most of the commenters miss the point.

    1. Most people here naman kasi think they are cool for hating something popular. And some are just following what the media is telling them. I used to hate her kasi I keep seeing hateful comments about her songs pero nung narinig ko ibang songs nya, yung mga deep talaga, narealize ko how smart this woman is. Lalo pa yung mga ginawa nyang business moves against SB. So I see why universities are doing this.

Lagi niyo sinasabi, "baka, Love Story at Shake It Off lang alam mo?"

Syempre if we like the popular songs of a certain singer/band, papakinggan at bibilhin namin album nun.

Kaya madali kayo ma-impressed.

Pambata for me ang lyrics ni Taylor.

Her song is nice but yung need pang pag aralan sa school???? Instead na english, math at science. What happen to all those IV league schools? No SAT and now this?

    ReplyDelete

    1. first of all not all her songs are about her exes that’s a misogynistic conception. Sila kanye ba, Bruno mars, or Ed sheeran sinasabihan ng ganyan when they also have songs about her ex? Second of all instead of math, englsih, or science? Did you go to college? Siguro naman you know that in college you have to take elective classes to fill up your schedule dba? Plus the point of college is to explore your interests on a higher level. Also about Biden no one is forcing you to vote for him. She is simply sharing her opinion hence freedom of speech in the country. And the SATs girl go read an article or two on how it targets underprivileged students then go spend time outside of your little privileged home and grow a heart if you can’t understand why they removed it.

You can't deny 'yung impact she has right now, ang mahal ng tickets to Japan ngayon kasi malapit na ang concert ni TS. name one artist of her generation who can do that. Even with her fans, isipin mo toxic baby bra warriors ng Kathniel but more powerful and goes by millions. She can say she hate this one person for no apparent reason and they'll make sure to ruin this person's life. Hate her or not ang interesting talaga how she's able to hold this much influence, this is a good topic on social studies

  42. Why would UP conduct a course on Taylor Swift? Why would taxpayers subsidize this? We don't have to spend a semester "learning' her strategies or technique or style. First of all, ang babaw ng songs nya. It's relatable and catchy, pero walang depth. Second, she caters to teenagers - the most impressionable market. Don't get me wrong. I like Taylor Swift. She is an artist because she can write her own songs and play instruments and can carry a tune. But for us to devote a course for her ay sobrang OA.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think it'll focus more on how she was able the break through the glass ceiling, being one of the richest today. Lalo na with her background and ang songs nya nga na "simple" lang at "mababaw" but they catapulted her to mega success. It may also be about society at large and why we've given TS so much sh*t (like what we do in this thread) that made her a billionaire at her age for simply doing exactly what she likes to do.

      Delete
    3. Pure ignorance po yung isipin na course siya when it is actually a subject. Ang linaw na nga sa thumbnail, pop culture as PART OF THE CURRICULUM. SUBJECT PO ITO, SPECIFICALLY AN ELECTIVE MEANING ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED CAN TAKE IT. It means aside from the main subjects ng course nila, may free electives silang pwedeng kunin which is purely for interest at hindi related sa course nila.

Truth is, pinag aaralan sya in universities abroad because of her business model and marketing savvyness. She is the only artist who became a billionaire through her music alone. Other universities also offer courses on her song writing, in a way using her and the lyrics of her songs, to pique the interest of students to the works of other poets. They are trying to connect the old to present-- how the old works of dead poets long gone can still be relevant now. Those who are triggered by a TS elective obviously don't get the genius of it. Their ego must be so EASILY bruised by the success of a woman who aren't their idol. Actually you don't have to be a fan to actually recognize her feat.
