Repost: 'Friends' Cast Mourn Death of Matthew Perry

The Friends cast is mourning one of their own.

Two days after Matthew Perry's sudden death, his fellow castmates from the hit television series — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer — spoke out in a joint statement, exclusively obtained by PEOPLE.

"We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family," their statement reads. "There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss."

"In time we will say more, as and when we are able," the statement continues. "For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world."

The message is then signed by Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc and Schwimmer.

For 10 years, Perry played Friends' wry wingman–turned–leading man Chandler Bing in a pitch-perfect comedic performance that landed him a 2002 Emmy nomination.

Series co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane were joined by executive producer Kevin Bright in issuing a joint statement on Sunday.

“We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing,” they wrote. “It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives. He was a brilliant talent.”

Reflecting on Perry’s breakout performance, they noted, “It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us.”

Kaufman, Crane and Bright's statement continued, “We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment — not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.”

The statement also included condolences for others grieving Perry, as well as a sweet reference to the Friends title tradition. “We send all of our love to his family and friends. This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”

Among the other Friends favorites to pay tribute was Maggie Wheeler, who portrayed Chandler's on-and-off-again TV girlfriend Janice.

“What a loss. The world will miss you Mathew Perry,” she wrote on Instagram. “The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared.”

Morgan Fairchild, who played Chandler's mother on the series, also shared her sadness at the actor's death.

"I’m heartbroken about the untimely death of my 'son', Matthew Perry," she wrote on Saturday, hours after news of Perry's death broke. "The loss of such a brilliant young actor is a shock. I’m sending love & condolences to his friends & family, especially his dad, John Bennett Perry, who I worked with on Flamingo Road & Falcon Crest. #RIPMatthew"

In Perry's 2004 book Friends … ‘Til the End, he recalled, “I was 24 when I got on the show. I’ll be 34 when it’s over, and those are really important years in somebody’s life."

"So to do it all in public … was difficult," Perry continued. "At first you have the wave of ‘I’m famous, and this is exactly what I’ve wanted my whole life.’ But then you go through the whole recluse stage where you think, ‘I wish everybody would stop staring at me.' "

He added: "And then you eventually, hopefully, get through all that. You find things in your life that are grounding, like your family and good friends.”

  1. Sad to say but he did this to himself. Unhealthy lifestyle, alcoholism, addiction, you name it.

    2. 11:57 impossible naman walang effect sa katawan ang years of substance abuse. They will all culminate to weakening his body organs.

    3. Sana bago ka nagbida bida, inalam mo muna yung dahilan bakit umabot sa ganyan. He was involved in a skiing accident. Due to that, he resorted to illegal substances. He also has depression while doing FRIENDS. He would have panic attacks if the live audience won't laugh at his jokes. He thought he wasn't doing enough when in fact he was the funniest in the group. He tried to fight his demons in the past years leading to his death. It's easy to blame people like him.

Pero alam mo 11:37, there's really no appropriate time to say what you've said. We will never know kung anong pinagdaanan niya.

Yung addiction niya is due to pain reliever and depression. Wala kang karapatan sabihin yan kahit kanino lalo kung di mo alam talaga story ng buhay niya.

    5. 11:37 I wish you would be able to watch some of his interviews. He had an addiction problem and depression, sakit yun that he had to go through on and on kasi hindi lang sya parang switch na naooff lang. he did his best to save himself and save others. Hope you can spare him your harsh words at let him rest in peace and let others mourn.

    7. 11:37 What a way to condole. I hope you are okay.

Rest in peace, Matthew. You lived a life only you knew how to handle.

    9. Most of the time ignorance comes out as stupidity 11:37. If you bother to watch his interviews or actually read his book, you will know the reason for the substance use/alcoholism. He even questioned why there are 5 other people on FRIENDS but he was the only one fighting inner demons

    10. 11:37 Auntie. Patay na yung tao, nanisisi ka pa.

    11. Judgmental ka grabe. Ikaw ba nag autopsy? And even if he OD, wala pa rin tayong karapatan husgahan sya. Hopefully, hindi mo maranasan ang depression at anxiety- your brain is your worst enemy.

Yes it was his choice to resort to alcoholism and addiction, but did his best to help himself (and eventually help other people with similar struggle). Bago siya namatay 11:37, he was doing pickleball so he could something productive para hindi na uli siya bumalik sa bisyo niya.
Try mo, TRY MO LANG na magbasa about his family history and personal life para maintindihan ng maliit mong utak yung pinagdaanan niya.

    13. 11:37 Yup, he did it to himself BUT he also sought professional help to overcome his issues.

Ganito na lang, if you were in his situation then someone told your family and friends na kasalanan mo kung bakit nangyari sayo yan, how would your family and friends feel WHILE GRIEVING?

    14. Kumusta ka na dyan 11:37?

    1. Big hug to you, fellow 7th friend. It was huge news to me too.

I’ve never missed any episode and have watched reruns over and over again.

Watching it gives me joy as I go through depression and anxiety. Am clinically diagnosed too.

I’ll be there for you (When the rain starts to pour)
I’ll be there for you (Like I’ve been there before)
I’ll be there for you (Cause you’re there for me too)

    4. Friends also helped me get through my depression in 2020, sa kapanahonan ng pandemic. I've watched Friends before but di ko natapos but glad I watched it again esp sa time when I badly needed it.
Chandler Bing was my favorite character. Rip Matthew Perry.

    5. 12:49 I feel you. I rewatch and rewatch sometimes I just have them as my background they make me feel less lonely while battling too. And Chandler, of all, is the most relatable.

    6. 6:40, there were lots of wonderful sitcoms when I was a young teen in the 80s. I still re-watch some of them, especially The Golden Girls, which is one of my top favorites. Di man siya relevant as it belonged to a different era, the elation I feel when I hear and watch the characters is still there. Meron ding The Wonder Years. 60s ang setting pero ang sarap panoorin.

    7. Same here. Also they bring back the best memories of my college days. Im lost for words. Those who didn’t watch this show as much and made as much impact as us whom the show saved from depression won’t understand our loss.

  6. It does seem like I lost a friend! I remember going back to Pinas 2005 to study (yes i’m old, and medicine is cheaper in pinas) and my bf at the time bought me all 10 season of friends. I will miss Chandler!

  11. I've watched FRIENDS hundred of times throughout the years, even got the lines memorized. The humor never gets old, it was the best comedy show for me. I never thought of losing one of them at such a young age like you lost one of your friends too.

Sana alam nya na people love him and he made us happy as Chandler Bing and all his other characters.
Watching friends wont be the same again.
