When Jason proposed, Moira was at her peak of her career, being a man he is, he must have felt threatened with the idea that Moira might find someone new due to her popularity, hence the proposal. He was not really ready, he just marked his teritory without commitment, that led to failed marriage.
I'm not an expert, just my own idea how men decides for their ego.
