Beloved Actress Cherie Gil Succumbs to Cancer

Premier actress Cherie Gil (Evangeline Rose Gil Eigenmann) died of cancer on August 5, 2022 in New York. According to sources, the actress was seeking treatment at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for her uterine cancer. She was 59.

Gil is the daughter of showbiz icons, Eddie Mesa and Rosemarie Gil, and the sister of Michael de Mesa and the late Mark Gil, who died in 2014 from liver cancer. She started her showbiz career at a young age and eventually landed significant roles in movies such as ‘Problem Child,’ ‘City After Dark,’ which were produced by Regal Films. 

However, her role as the villainess Lavinia Arguelles in ‘Bituing Walang Ningning’ of Viva Films made her an icon. Today’s young talents have expressed dreams of being splashed with water from Gil in a recreation of the scene and dialogue of ‘You’re nothing but a second rate, copycat.’ Her last projects were playing Hannah Pitt and other roles in ‘Angels in America’ Part 1 on stage and Zaina Macadato in GMA’s ‘Legal Wives’ on free tv before leaving the Philippines in 2021. Gil’s sudden departure shocked her fans, but her decision was respected.

Gil has a son, Jay, with actor Leo Martinez and two children, Bianca and Raphael, with violinist Rony Rogoff.
