Concerned for the welfare of fellow Filipinos who are out of work and unable to return home to the Philippines, Wilson organized relief drives to help them survive the lockdown.

Wilson's story caught the attention of @gmanews, and wanted to feature him in a series of documentaries showing life of Filipinos who are stranded abroad because of the pandemic. pic.twitter.com/leSAJYK6ag

He was told it would help give attention to his cause, so Wilson agreed.
— Ezra Acayan (@eacayan) December 1, 2020
They were consistent in praising him and reminding him that it would help his cause. In the end, GMA was able to produce an entire documentary off of his work which he did for free.

Wilson got in-touch with me after he saw my posts of GMA asking for free work. In our video conversation, I explained how GMA is profiting off of free material, given to them by unwitting people who have little or no knowledge as to how their material is being exploited.

He recalled an incident where he filmed the Notre Dame on fire, and CNN and Reuters approached him and offered upfront to pay for his amateur footage.
— Ezra Acayan (@eacayan) December 1, 2020
Wilson's particular episode enjoys nearly three million views on Facebook, while other episodes in the series have millions more.
— Ezra Acayan (@eacayan) December 1, 2020
This is aside from the fact that GMA now owns rights to republish and profit off of Wilson's work for as long as they want.
— Ezra Acayan (@eacayan) December 1, 2020
These networks make BILLIONS and often grab content from social media and from unwitting people like Wilson, and they don't pay them a single centavo.

EDIT: Staff did reach out to him after program aired, and pitched in donations out of their own pockets. Confirmed this Wilson. This just makes this incident alot more heartbreaking. The only winner here is the network, both Wilson and the staff are victims.

DeleteHahahaha. Per show may budget, kakarampot kaya gawain ng ABS puros xdeals.
DeleteBayan mo ipatrol mo is also free dahil sa "citizen journalism" ito. 😂 Wc GMA imitated with Youscoop. No one is clean.
Immediate action eh stop the practice. O tapos, ano sunod?! Wala man lang balak bayaran yung mga content creators? Ni singkong bulag, waley? ganun? Pero sila, kumikitang pangkabuhayan pa rin? Enebenemenyeeeeen...

ReplyDeleteShame on you GMA. Taking advantage of the vulnerable and a bunch of freeloaders. Nakakahiya kayo!! Mga sakim at ganid sa pera.
ReplyDeleteNkaka hiya kyo gma
ReplyDeleteKapal! Ganid! Nakakainit ng ulo!
ReplyDeleteMay bagong pasabog si Ezra.. utos daw sa staff to reach out lang sa mga amateurs kasi mukhang hindi magdedemand ng bayad. Kadiri!
ReplyDeleteNakakagigil kayo GMA!!!
Ito pala nangyayare behind the camera. Pwe.
ReplyDeleteyak! kapal ng mukha!!
ReplyDeleteShame on you, GMA!
DeleteHave you read their statement? Isisisi pa sa staff ang kacheapan nila. Look at KMJS.
Know your work's worth! Hindi naman sila struggling network o first-time producer, kaya nilang magbayad!
DeleteDisgusting
Kapal pa to take credits sa pinagpaguran ng iba. Kapal.
DeleteWalang Silang PUSO ngayong pasko
ReplyDeletegrabe ang GMA, to the lowest of lows
ReplyDeleteSobrang galit mga fantard ng dos na tipong mananakit na lol...nasa pacific ocean na abs cbn ..at GMA daming commercials kahit replay thats what u call good Karma...lol
ReplyDeleteAnd yet ang cheap pa din nila
DeleteNow I'm not sure if GMA deserves those news awards.
DeleteBottomline is they can always say no if they don’t like. No need to lambast the staff as they are just doing their jobs. Been working on different media and that’s a practice since they’re trying to scrimp the allocated budget as much as possible especially now. Wag tayo masyadong mapagmalinis.
ReplyDeleteBut it's still wrong. The fact that these people called GMA out means that grabe talaga. So stop giving excuses to your network. Just because other networks are doing it doesn't mean it's right.
Delete1213 JUST BECAUSE OTHERS ARE DOING IT, DOESN'T MEAN IT IS RIGHT!!! May values education ka ba dati? 😑
DeletePorket ginagawa ng lahat ok na? Maling mali, pinagkakitaan nila ang mga footages na libre through ads and social media views e. Yung expose ni Ezra is for everyone to know na pwede nila pagkakitaan ang mga photo, video at music nila amateur man or professional ang pagproduce. This is a good source of income lalo na sa panahon ngayon.
Scrimping on the budget when they are earning a lot from ads pati sa youtube is still a predatory practice my dear.
They can always do it the proper way but since they know na ang pag-out sa social media ay may kasunod na one minute popularity they still do it anyways. They can nego if they want na may bayad and if the nego doesn’t work then don’t give your work. Easy as that. Kaya nila ginagawa yan before kasi may pumapayag or may lumalaput kasi free mileage din for them.
DeleteScrimp on budget, ano sila PTV-4? Youtube channel na bago?! Kumikita sila across multiple platforms, established network na sila... wag silang swapang!
Deleteso victim shaming tayo 12:13?
DeleteNO. You don't have to ask if you don't have the budget. There is no free lunch. I mean you have workers and full staff to do this job.
DeleteMabayad kayo, hoy! Hindi 'yong ganyan-ganyan lang. Redeem yourself. Bayaran niyo 'yong tao!
ReplyDeleteWHAT A SHAME GMA! That is one reason why I do not watch Jessica Soho's show because they milk on trending/viral videos and get the contents free of charge. Whereas in the UK, videos are being licensed by agencies and they pay a sum to the owner of viral videos. Ewww GMA. Nakakahiya kayo
ReplyDeletekung ako sa GMA, contact this guy and pay him a fee or token man lang for his work. Tutal napakinabangan ninyo. Have some work ethics.
Be Kind.
ReplyDeletesuper amazing ba ang mga footages nitong ezra na ito? amateur pa rin naman ata ah. kung maka-rant naman. i agree that freeloading is unethical, but why rant on social media? just to get some traction?
ReplyDeletelearn also to be professional. you're burning bridges that way sir. di ka naman nila pinilit magbigay ng footage. maganda pa sa maganda mga footages mo but media outlets will be wary and approach you with a ten-foot pole because of your attitude.
