Yes there are some na nagcecelebrate talaga. There was this one time na may mga kasama ako, and yung kasama ko nainvite ng family friend nya sa bahay nila since they're celebrating thanks giving. In short, sabit lang ako (pero pinagpaalam naman ako ng kasama ko bago kami pumunta dun) LOL and I was surprised that time that some pinoys celebrate it also. They said that they have relatives in the US kasi that's why they celebrate too.

Its ok if the intention of the greeting is for people in the US celebrating Thanksgiving. If you were an expat living abroad, I don't see the reason not to celebrate it as well. But to actually celebrate it the way Americans do, while in the Philippines, its kind of absurd. This tradition, I think should be exclusive to Americans/Canadians because it is deeply rooted in their country's history. Pinoys have sort of thanksgiving naman during fiestas, thanking the Patron saint for good harvest.
I really don't understand how pinoys in the Philippines with no American affiliation celebrate Thanksgiving.. I mean there's history behind it why the Americans celebrate it. If you wanna give thanks fine but don't connect it with American Thanksgiving. I really cringe when pinoys greet each other happy Thanksgiving on American Thanksgiving day. ReplyDeleteIbang thanksgiving sinasabi mo. Ang nag start kasi dito nyan yung mga English colonists/Pilgrims as part of their religion na rin para sa first harvest nila since dumating sila dito sa New World/US. So wala talagang kinalaman sa Pinas.

Delete4:06 where did you get that from? i am an american citizen, spent half my life in the east coast. just because i don’t partake in all the celebrations, you can assume i do not love my adoptive country. i just learn so much history (the real one, not the whitewashed version history books) and learned first hand information from native american, hispanic, and african american friends to know that not everything is a celebration, but remembering and respecting.

ReplyDeleteI think wala nman masama maki thanksgiving kung galing ka states or may kamaganak ka o kaibigan nasa States at gusto mo silang batiin dahil isa itong masayang pagtitipon at pasasalamat sa Panginoon. Wala din masamang maki thanksgiving kung nais mo din mgpasalamat sa Diyos sa lhat ng biyaya at buhay. Nothing’s wrong. Only wrong kung nkikithanksgiving ka kase lakas maka sosyal.

DeleteHer dad and brother lives there, so I think malaking influence sa kanya mula pagkabata, na taga dun ang tatay at kapatid nya. Plus yung post nya I think is for someone in the US who is celebrating the occasion.
ReplyDeleteIts ok if the intention of the greeting is for people in the US celebrating Thanksgiving. If you were an expat living abroad, I don't see the reason not to celebrate it as well. But to actually celebrate it the way Americans do, while in the Philippines, its kind of absurd. This tradition, I think should be exclusive to Americans/Canadians because it is deeply rooted in their country's history. Pinoys have sort of thanksgiving naman during fiestas, thanking the Patron saint for good harvest.

If you wanna give thanks fine but don't connect it with American Thanksgiving. I really cringe when pinoys greet each other happy Thanksgiving on American Thanksgiving day. Please know the history of Thanksgiving first. It's not just about turkey and pumpkin pie. Or choose a different day nalang. We can actually give thanks everyday.. Why choose the American holiday?
