San Miguel Beer’s Arwind Santos was fined P200,000 by the PBA on Thursday for directing a monkey gesture at TNT KaTropa import Terrence Jones during Game 5 of the Commissioner’s Cup Finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial handed the heftiest fine in recent memory after summoning Santos at the league office in Libis to explain the actions he made with 1:05 left in the second quarter of the Beermen’s 99-94 win Wednesday night.
(Racial discrimination has no place in basketball, sports in general and the PBA in particular. The league does not condone such actions, and a stiffer punishment will be handed if similar incidents happen in the future.)
(As Commissioner, I would like to apologize and ask for understanding from Mr. Terrence Jones and his family. The PBA is open for everyone regardless of color, race or beliefs.)
Santos also must commit a total of 100 hours of community service and undergo seminar and counseling on equality and racial discrimination.
The veteran forward later used his Twitter account to apologize to Jones and to the public.
— arwind santos (@arwindsotnas) August 15, 2019
“I don’t mean anything bad (to) you (Jones). I hope you forgive me (and) I wanna say sorry,” Santos said in a video that lasted 44 seconds.
(I would like to sincerely apologize to the fans of TNT, San Miguel, the PBA and all those who were hurt by my actions.)
“Wala po akong masamang intensyon. Inaamin ko po, mali po ako. Sorry po, sana mapatawad niyo po ako. Tao lang po ako na nagkakamali din. Yun lang po. Sana mapatawad niyo po ako. Sorry,” Santos added.
(I have no ill intentions. I admit, I was wrong. I’m sorry, I hope you forgive me. I’m just a person who makes mistakes too. That’s all. I hope you forgive me. Sorry.)
Santos refused to apologize hours after Game 5, saying that the move was done in an attempt at playing mind games with Jones.
Jones condemned Santos’ actions the following day and called on the league to take “swift and significant action.”
Disgusting POS
ReplyDeleteRacist???
Delete2:16 Poor you. You were raised the wrong way.
PBA yan. Professional league so he should act one.
DeleteBut they are playing professionally. Being paid as a professional player may ethics at policy po dapat na sinusunod. I get it may asaran tlaga especially basketball na nilalaro sa kanto.. pero this! Unacceptable for a professional athlete, in a nation wide coverage game! Have you seen NBa players na gumaganyan s bench??? Huh??! 2:16
Delete2:16 ayusin mo muna yang "like for example" mo bago ka magtatatalak jan.
Delete2:16 Does it matter kung kapwa local or not? basta ang tira ay based on someone's skin color or race specific attributes racist yun. Palusot ka pa dyan.
Delete2:16. You should write a thesis on the history of monkey-ing around based on a filipino pov. While you’re at it maybe try and do some research on racial slurs and maybe do a deep reflection on yourself.
DeleteOo racist yun. Read and learn how the blacks are treated. May history po kasi. Also his action is uncalled for. Anong pang-aasar? Pang-aasar to say na monkey yung tao, bakit monkey?
2:16. Yes kahit ginawa niya kay Calvin Abueva yun he can be called racist. Google internalized racism. Ang labo ng analogy mo. Gaslighting much? Also why would you call someone a monkey whether filipino siya or not? Seriously. If someone calls you out in the street na you look like a monkey won’t you be offended too? For god’s sake he is an effing professional athlete. If this happened in another country wala na siya endorsments and his team would have probably dropped him already.
Duh
Deletewow the fact you took the time and effort to dismiss and justify such a despicable behavior speaks a lot about you 2:16 your parents must be proud 😒
Delete2:16 kaya racist eh dahil sa ibang race(lahi) ginawa.
Delete2:16 AM
You should know better. Enough said.
DeleteArwind, just apologize. It's obvious you are referring to Jones when you did that gesture. It is racist. Apologize and be sincere.
DeleteDowngrade na pala ngayon ang pagiging racist to just making asar. What a time to be alive.
Delete2:16 AM ethnic discrimination ang tawag kung ginawa niya sa kapwa local which is still bad. Isa pa, sabi dito sa article na Santos said that "the move was done in an attempt at playing mind games with Jones". Therefore, tama lang na may penalty si Santos for his racist monkey antics directed towards Jones. Also, you and Santos should learn to be more sensitive.
I doubt. Sana malaman mo para maintindahan mo where their sensitivity is coming from.
DeletePeople like 2:16 is everything that is wrong in this world
Delete8:05 saan niya sinabi yun?
Delete1:52 Read the second to the last sentence of the article. For your convenience:
Delete"Santos refused to apologize hours after Game 5, saying that the move was done in an attempt at playing mind games with Jones."
-not 8:05 AM
Bakit 9:02 AM African American ba si Allan K? Was it done in bad faith and done to play mind games on Allan K? Ikaw ang malabo and super ignorante - not only nowadays but yesterday, today and probably until the end of time.
Delete2:16 how igno***t!
DeleteHay naku 2:07 PM! 11:41 AM is not even talking about the theory of evolution. It's not just mere aesthetics gaya ng pinapalabas mo when it comes to some Caucasians looking like monkeys. It goes beyond that when it comes to African Americans. Tsaka ang non-involvement mo sa discrimination nila noon doesn't give you the right, privilege or license to be insensitive and ignorant on racism towards African Americans.
Iba! 9:02
DeleteMaling mali ginawa mo boy.
Good job po 👏
ReplyDeleteHahahahahahahahahahaa
DeleteHahahaha at hat, to go with the cymbals.
DeleteHonest and sincere apology. wag nang ibash. Tao Lang at nagkakamali. Importante may responibility at acceptance sa ginawa niya
ReplyDeleteNag apologize lang sya after nya mabash
DeleteI don't find it sincere. He was so unapologetic before the fine was given. He taught this thing won't blow up kaya ang yabang niya pa but it did kaya ayan.
DeleteAnong sincere dyan he refused to say sorry after the game. Mukha lang napilitan kasi may penalty
DeleteSincere? Lol
DeleteNapilitan lang yan. E yung interview nya nung una hindi daw sya magsosorry.
DeleteI hope Arwind experences the same thing when he travels abroad.
DeleteNOT SINCERE.
DeleteAt least humble sya. Humingi ng pasensya. Ganyan dapat when your make a mistake hindi yung unaffected at keber lang ang drama.
ReplyDeleteHahaha humble? Kung di pa sya nacalled out di sya mag aapologize.
DeleteTake note: he was unapologetic in the beginning until he was sanctioned.
Deletewala syang choice. ayaw nya tlga mag apologize.
DeleteAhhaha he refused to apologize hours after the game nga e. If sincere talaga sya edi sana nag sorry sya right after the game diba.
DeleteAy pasensya na mga kaFP, im out of the country kasi kaya di ako informed. I based my comment from this article kasi--- 12:48
DeleteHUMBLE? Bwahahahaha
DeleteGood move, PBA. Santos’ actions reflected the Filipino people. Nakakahiya.
ReplyDeleteHa? Bakit nagreflect? Magulang ka ba ni Arwind?
Deletegirl many people do that unfortunately. not just pinoys
DeleteWell 2:55 AM, 12:54 AM is just talking about the Filipino people. What the person said does not even dispute your opinion.
DeleteHe deserves it!!! Racist much?
ReplyDeleteBakit Racist? E me Import din sila.
DeleteYabang mo Kasi...ayaw pa nga mag apologize nung una...feeling nya Tama pa ginawa nya. Napilitan Lang Yan mag apologize
ReplyDeleteHindi yun apology, lip service lang yun. Hallow words.
DeleteJust yesterday, he said he wouldnt apologize. He was pretty sure he did nothing wrong. So I dont know what you guys are talking about when you say he's sincere with his apology.
ReplyDeleteYummy ni Arwind.
ReplyDelete1:01 shallow as shallow can be
Deleteewwww
DeleteNagkakamali? Pang ilan mo na yan arwind! Nakaka dissapoint na attitude mo on the court!
ReplyDeleteUsed to be a fan of him since UAAP days, sobrang yabang na talaga nya ngayon..hindi enough and fine na 200k dapat di na din muna pinalaro yan..suspended din dapat!
Like abueva for example -gross
ReplyDeleteSincere ba yan? E ayaw nga niyan mag sorry nung una e!
ReplyDeletehay naku ha pag ikaw sinabihan ng ganyan sa foreign country ano kaya mafi feel mo
ReplyDeleteMga galing UAAP at NCAA ganyan.
Pwed kang many asar pero huwag to the extend na magiging racists ka.
ReplyDelete200,000php lang? Barya lang yan sakanila sus. Di nasamahan ng suspension nang madala
ReplyDeleteOne month salary din yun
DeleteMaliit lang yan. Kayabangan nyan. Nagchampion nanaman ulit sila yayabang nanaman ulit
ReplyDeleteBakit ba kasi nangaasar pa eh tinuturing nga kayong PROFESSIONAL athletes tapos ganyan asal mo. Leave the taunting to the audience/fans and keep the game clean.
You’re encouraging a culture of hate lol
ReplyDelete"Mag so sorry ako?
Exactly. If you’ve watched this guy played mayabang talaga sya not sure when I started to notice it pero obvious na nung sunod sunod sila nagcchampion.
DeleteHe should also be suspended, another form of bullying
ReplyDeleteTrue. Di enough yung 200k lang. how will he learn his lesson
Deleteayokong panoorin video mo..ang plastic mo.
ReplyDeleteIt's already 2019 and there are still stupid racists like this Arwind Santos. Being light skinned does not make you a superior being. And what kind of penalty was that??? 200K only?? Slap him with millions in terms of penalty and ban him forever as a player para matuto sya
ReplyDeleteYou also have to understand the cultural and racial implication of what he said. Calling an African-American "monkey" is almost as bad as the N word.
ReplyDeleteNung panahon ng civil war, plantation owners said na di dapat bigyan ng freedom ang black slaves because they're not humans, they're close to monkeys.
Imagine the impact of that.
Nakakahiya walang sportsmanship.
ReplyDeleteRacist???? Well define racist OA nyo
ReplyDelete
