parang naintindihan naman ni Kim, kaya nga may "no matter what" sya. No matter what everyone says, good or bad, still a proud CEBUANA. Ganun lang yun besh.
What's bizarre to you may be breakfast for me. That's always been one of the profoundly beautiful things about food. Curry is not just India, as India is not just curry. North Vietnam is known for Pho and the south is known for Banh Mi. But their country is known for both and more. There are limitless versions of Mee and Kway Teow around Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia (and Indonesia has lechon too). And not all of Thailand is raving over Pad Thai.
Food, much like our English accents, is always different in every country, region, province, city, barangay, even in every household. I bet your mom makes kare-kare differently from my ManileƱo dad. But that should not mean one is better than the other. Food, most importantly, is a personal experience. What's four star to you may be sauteed shit for me.
I call it good research because they dug so deep that even some Cebuanos wouldn't probably be so familiar. But how we react - curious to discover, or bitter because we weren't featured - depends entirely on our character.
And before you even think poverty porn, I would like you to see how much Land Cruisers and excecutive sedans park at this small one-way eskinita at Guadalupe, lining up for Doming's ngohiong. Observe how the successful market stall owners of Carbon market look after their vegetable stores in the morning, and get picked up by their chauffeur-driven luxury vans at the end of the day. And drop your jaw at how the rich and famous of Cebu walk on gravel in their stilettos at Sugbo Mercado, the biggest, noisiest, most crowded food market in the country.
I challenge you, Mr. Matti. I will tour you around Cebu on a streetfood buffet. We will go to all those places rightfully featured by Netflix and then some. But I will do all that under one condition - whether you prove yourself right about our food and culture, or prove yourself terribly wrong and realize that we do offer some of the best streetfood in this country - I don't ever want to see your face in my province ever again.
You’re barking at the wrong tree.
Here we go again with the Manileno thing. I don’t know, not from Manila and if people are not familiar with your food, educate them rather than shaming them.
Ay, day, 2:26, I am sure may pagpaparating nyan kay Matti. Pak na Pak ka JD. That reminds me of a city in Indonesia where we lived for almost two years. There is a hole in the wall there where they have the best mie goreng. The place is dark, not cozy, but the customers come in their Mercedezes and BMWs... and yes, even our adobos and paksiws have different versions depending on the regions.
I think ang ibig sabihin ni Matti sa poverty porn ay hindi literally na pang mahirap ang food, more like instead na food ang i-sell yung pagiging mahirap, yung paawa. Corrent me if I’m wrong nabasa ko lang sa explaination niya.
Korak! And it turns out Erik Matti is directing an episode for HBO Series ‘Food Lore’ pala!
Wow! Matti who you?!? Revered Local and foreign food critics go eat at hole in the wall establishments with no qualms. Example na lang is Anthony Bourdain. Kumakain sila ng street food kasi doon nila masasample Kung ano yun authentic flavors specific to a culture or place. Matti just showed how ignorant he is when it comes to food.
Poverty porn my ass.
Wala syang point. I saw the entire episode, it was beautifully done. Napaka uplifting and light nga ng presentation. Di kasi kayo foodie Kaya di kayo nakakain tindi.
Mr. matti stick with being a director and not be a critic of food.. directing seems to affect your palate or does it mirror your career also? when you say its awful you must be saying about your career LOL foodISlife
So what is the problem?
The netizen comment somewhat confirms my suspicion that what really touched a nerve was the "poverty" comment. While Matti's rant bordered on ignorant, much of the indignation stems from the wrong reason too . At eto nakikisawsaw pa na may "no matter what" pa.
ReplyDeleteparang naintindihan naman ni Kim, kaya nga may "no matter what" sya. No matter what everyone says, good or bad, still a proud CEBUANA.

Masyado madrama
ReplyDeleteYup. And the Cebu episode seemed so staged
DeleteIntindinhin nyo kasi si matti. Wag puro pinoy pride. May point naman kasi sya

ReplyDeleteMAY GUERA BA KIMMY? BAT PALAGI KANG NAKA PEACE!!! KALOKA KA
ReplyDeleteIrresponsible. Instead of bringing clarity to the debate, she's creating more divisiveness.
