Instagram star Sondos Alqattan was dropped by several cosmetic brands following the internet backlash she received after complaining about a new law enabling Filipino domestic workers to have days off and control of their passport.
Gulf News reported that at least three international brands have cut ties with Alqattan days after her comments on the law that sprang from a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the protection of Filipino workers in Kuwait.
The MOU was signed after months of strained relations between the Philippines and Kuwait after the body of domestic worker Joanna Demafelis was discovered in a freezer at the abandoned apartment of her employers.
Lebanese national Nader Essam Assaf, her male employer, and his wife were hunted by police. Assaf was later sentenced to death by a Kuwaiti court after he confessed to killing the 29-year-old Demafelis.
Max Factor Arabia, the Middle East branch of the cosmetic giant, said it was shocked by the comments the beauty guru made about the new labor law and immediately suspended all its collaborations with her.
Prior to this, French perfume brand M. Micallef and London-based Chelsea Beautique severed all its ties with the influencer who has 2.3 million followers on Instagram.
Several beauty brands that worked with Alqattan and local companies that carry her range of cosmetics have yet to respond to requests for comments.
Pro-OFW group Blas F. Ople Policy Center also condemned Alqattan's remarks and said she personified "the ugly face of modern-day slavery and should be included in the POEA’s blacklist of abusive and undesirable foreign employers."
Alqattan has refused to apologize for her comments and said the backlash against her was "unjustified" and that "many Kuwaitis and Gulf nationals agree" with her opinion that the employer must keep their "servant's" passport. — Rie Takumi/RSJ, GMA News
Yaassssss!!!!
ReplyDeleteButi nga
more please ng makaranas 'to maging 'servant'
Deletenakakapanginig lang laman ung tawagin tayong "servants"
DeleteLet her get off her pedestal and life of privilege and walk in the shoes of desperate people. The only thing they want is to provide and feed their families. We are proud of our people, who just want dignity and fairness from their employers. Go bury yourself lady. To my co-Filipinos out there, I work as a Registered Nurse in one of the biggest hospitals here in the USA, but I take pride of our kababayans. Let us show them that we are more than a slave. We are hard-working people who deserve equal treatment from the other group of ethnicities. Let us show them that we were raised to treat a janitor with the same respect as the CEO. We are nice to everyone and we don't see ourselves either below or above than anyone else.
Deleteserves you right!
ReplyDeleteBa yan????
Delete12:37 of course she is promoting the product they want a good ambassador not like her
Delete12:37 it's not an opinion. it's discrimination. know the difference po.
Delete12:37 hello? Opinion? She was saying na Filipino workers should have no days off at all.
Ikaw yun anon 12:37. Ikaw kaya sabihan ng boss mo na magtrabaho 7days a week, walang pahinga, tapos kunin passport mo? Or baka kasi wala kang trabaho at isa kang palamunin kaya mo nasabi yan??
Delete12:37 sige ikaw maging servant nya.. Opinion lang pala eh. Try mo dali
DeleteIT WAS AN OPINION, A DISCRIMINATORY ONE.
Deleteipasok na maid yang 12:37 dyan para hinde sya maka day off!
DeleteHindi porke you express your view ay opinion na o freedom of expression. If your view is downgrading, insulting and descriminating that is NOT OPINION.
Deletesa lahat ng ig stories nyan babaeng yan, PI ko talaga sya. tinag ko sa mga post at FU ko pa. she deserves all the curses. my mom worked as a domestic helper sa middle east at nakaranas ng pananakit ng mga selosang arabyana na yan. kakabwisit! mga mukha naman wax ang fez at ugaling wax din. lol
DeleteStrip this poor excuse of a human being her sources of income until she is reduced to a slave and let’s see if she for the life of me asks for these basic benefits she wouldn’t want to give her household workers.
ReplyDeleteYeah! Laban mga kapatid! We shouldn't allow anyone to degrade our co-Filipinos. Modern century na! We should put an end to this slavery!
ReplyDeleteWell that's what she gets.
She should've said sorry but she did not. Mega explain parin siya.. ma pride siya!!!
ReplyDeletetrue. kaqiqil si bakla
DeleteLet's bully the bully until she learn her lessons!
DeleteShe doesn't understand the backlash coz its a "sentiment" shared by most kuwaitis. And besides, just because majority has that thinking doesn't mean its right.
DeleteHere in the states, Kuwaitis or middle eastern people are treated coldly. They should start realizing that they are not that special.
DeleteHindi porket may black gold sila, they can do that to their "servant". Kung walang servant.. How can they just survive a week or even a day without them. Sabi nga nila.. Take care of the people that you always look down cos they are also the ones that can drag you down.
ReplyDeleteTumfact ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ
DeleteSana lahat ng endorsements nya kumalas na! Nang magtanda ang babaitang to
ReplyDeleteGoood Riddance! Until now nanginginig pa rin ako while reading this article. This insensitive media influencer daw should be banned everywhere.
ReplyDeleteTaas pa rin pride ni atcheng. She’s not even remorseful sa mga pinagsasabi nya.
ReplyDeletesadly po 12.33 yan po ang norm dito sa mid-east.. hindi ko po gine-generalize but most of them out of 100%, 95% sa kanila slave ang tingin sa mga DH natin at iba pang lahi na DH. It's her upbringing and no amount of human rights outcry will change that fact. They think they are entitled because they have the money, in her own words sa first video niya "if they will run away who will REFUND me?" so for her binili niya na ang taong yung, kasama na dito ang rights and freedom nung "servant" on a lighter side sana matadtad siya ng acne na may nana sa buong mukha niya..
Deletebuti nga!
ReplyDeleteAno kaya make up remover nito. Asarol? Piko? Pala? Kapal eh sing kapal ng pader namin. Ikaw ngayon maglaba ng panty mo tse!
ReplyDeletealcohol ata ginagamit nito hahaha
DeleteAyan kasi.. mag tutorial ka na lang ng how to put tawas in your leki leki!
ReplyDeleteHahaha
Deletebilis ng karma, she deserves it
ReplyDeleteKarma!
ReplyDeleteNapakaignorante niya. Ganyan ba mostly ng arab women?
ReplyDeleteKarma
ReplyDeleteTama lang yan! Hindi dapat tino-tolerate ganyang klaseng tao! Bigyan yan ng leksyon! Without her followers and her sponsors, she’s nothing!
Kung tatakas man yung DH. Pagbayarin nyu.
ReplyDeleteHave you guys seen yung isa nyang video? Hindi naman daw importante yun, may mas importanteng bagay pa daw like botox. Haha jusko
ReplyDeleteAnong klaseng pag iisip yun? May other vid pa pala sya addressing that matter pero di pa nag public apology? Matigas ang mukha (literal)
Deleteshe even said na 'the four-day-a-month off days, differs from a household worker compared to a business worker' truly a vile woman. Regardless of a person's occupation everyone deserves a day off.
Only in the philippines kahit nakakahiya na pinagagawa ng public figure, mukhang praised pa sila dor it at deadma lng ang public/sponsors. Kaya namimihasa eh
ReplyDeleteAgree! Dito kasi basta napagkakakitaan hala sige!
DeleteKarma is a bitch girl. Labas pa ng official statement dali
ReplyDeleteButi nga sayo! Chaka mo naman! Pwe!
ReplyDeletemaganda nga , majoho naman.
ReplyDeleteButi nga๐๐ป
DeletePhilippines should not even send ofw’s in that country. There are other respectful and kind countries who are always or have always been willing to help Filipinos
ReplyDeleteI read her statement. Hindi nag apologize. Poorly written pa. Wala sigurong friends na tumulong mag proofread. Lol
Serves her right! For somebody whose religion is being discriminated, she should be amongst those who advocate for fairness and anti-bigotry.
ReplyDeleteStill, 2.3million followers. Unless those numbers go down, she will never apologize.
ReplyDeleteNo matter how beautiful you can be if you have a rotten attitude, you will never be beautiful. You don't deserve to be a human being. I wish you get reincarnated as a cockroach!
ReplyDeleteShe seemed to latch on to the fact na maraming nagsabi na maganda sya. It was on her statement. People, let’s stop commenting “beautiful on the outside, rotten on the inside”. She seems to be enjoying it. Thanking people pa for calling her beautiful.
ReplyDeleteServes her right!!!! There is no excuse to what she said!!! Thought of writing the said brands to do what they did but there they go and kudos to them! But i believe there’s still a big brand left which might be supporting her! They might need a reminder that influential brands should not support this kind of being!!! Hope someone tells her na She messed up with the wrong people!!!! Lahing Andres Bonifacio ‘to atapang atao di atakbo!!!!! #dipasisiil
ReplyDeletehuman rights and anti-slavery group should make a petition and demand that woman to make a public apology.but i am glad that cosmetic brands are distancing from her because hate speech and promoting slavery have no room to our modern society.so,those people who are agreeing with her are ignorant and lack of repect of human rights and dignity.so,it is right to blacklist these people.our domestic workers are earning a living decently and they have the right to be defended and be supported because they have much rights as everyone in this planet.being a domestic worker doesnt mean they are slave or they have lesser rights than us.i stand for the rights of every domestic workers.
ReplyDeleteThis swine is a douchebag. No one should buy products of those that sponsor her.
ReplyDeleteButi nga sa kanya. Mawala lahat endorsement s. Kala napakaganda punong puno ng make-up ang mukha. Maitim ang budhi.
ReplyDeleteHindi ba pwede i-shut down ng instagram yan? Kasi offensive. Racist.
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with being called a servant. That's a decent job plus most of the Filipinos work like that.
ReplyDeleteI sent her messages multiple times and she blocked me... nababasa nya talaga Good that these companies wont tolerate such behaviour
ReplyDeleteMAC dropped her
ReplyDeleteShe has never and will never issue an apology. Fact is, she sticks with her belief and wont change a thing to it. She is not geting offended on any remarks and comments, and if you see her latest IG post it looks like she's riding the 'trending' fame. Sad to hear that most Gulf people look up to themselves as the Supreme race. It's 21st century but slavery is still real!
ReplyDelete
