Kung same spiel lang naman ang mga CSR everyday(or everynight), I am sure they will pronounce it with clarity. It depends. Ang iba lang kasi, akala mo hinahabol ng aso pag nagsalita. Just my opinion.

Ako may nakausap na call center agent na Pinoy trying to sound American with a southern twang. Nakakaloka talaga yung usap namin because I knew he was Pinoy, but I think customers cannot ask them to speak Filipino, ganon yata yun. Anyway, it was just such a strange experience for me to speak to a kababayan who sort of garbled English with a southern accent. But to be fair, I was pleased with how accommodating he was, and he also politely repeated himself whenever I asked him to reiterate what he said. At least hindi nainis or nagtono na naiinis kapag pinapa clarify ko siya magsalita.
Maybe the Call Centers can give their phone reps speech courses/training to help them succeed on the job. I mean, might as well invest in your people, right?
I spoke to an agent who tried his best to speak with a twang. Finally, I asked him if he's Filipino. He said "opo". He was very excited and we transacted our business in Tagalog. Much was accomplished and my problem was resolved in a timely manner. We spent the rest of our time talking from how's the weather to where in the US do I live. Nice man. Ha ha.

Yeah every time I get sales calls I feel bad for the agents. Most of the time they were having a hard time conversing. One time I tried talking to an agent in Tagalog but he said he’s not allowed. Poor kid.

Kino-call out po kasi nagta-Tagalog sa call center at napapagalitan ng client. 'Yung iba rin po kasi hindi naman po graduate kaya pagpasensyahan niyo na po kung trying hard sila mag-English.
You will never understand unless you have worked in the industry. American accent or neutral accent is encouraged from day one you start training. And you cant speak tagalog if youre working for an internatioanl client unless they would allow you to do so kahit na hirap na hirap na sa pag iingles ung kausap mong pinoy sa kabilang linya you still have to respond in english.

You obviously don't get her point. What's she trying to imply is... speak clearly without the fake accent. There is nothing wrong with our accent. Some people think that if they speak like the Americans their English is better... which is obviously not true. No accent is correct. Native speakers of English from different parts of the world have different accents.

Idol ko talaga sa English-an si Lea bata pa lang ako. Gusto ko yung neutral accent nya at ng brother nya. I think Pinoy call center agents should emulate Lea's. I really don't have an issue with Filipino call center agents. I feel that that industry has grown into the biggest employer of Filipins because of the English speaking abilities of Pinoys. If American companies chose Pinoys, why be choosy and judgmental. My only beef with Filipino English speakers is the use of "maam, sir, actually, though, in fairness". Those are just what are at the top of my head right now, pero marami pang words and phrases that has been " bastardized" by TH mag English Pinoys.

Most if not all call centers train their reps to speak with an American accent so not their fault they try to “sound American”. But yes, they must speak clearly and not chew their words.

In defense of Filipino call center agents, compared to those that are from India, the Filipino CSAs are more courteous and charming. Those from India are mostly snotty. It's just the Filipinos who notice the put on accent. Most Caucasians don't take notice instead they think it is an accent. Baka naman ang phone line ni Ms Lea ang may problema. I am not a CSA marami lang akong encounters with them and I don't mind their accents or their put on American accent what is important to me are these things: courtesy, humor and patience, knowledge of the product I call about and ability to resolve the issue.
Caucasians do notice. Tayo ngang Pinoy alam natin pag native Pinoy ang kausap natin na natuto Lang ng tagalog. My husband is American and oftentimes sasabihin nya sa akin na Filipino or Indian kausap nya.
I'm Filipino residing in Pennsylvania and I can tell! But I don't really mind as long as clear ang CSR in his/her way of speaking. Just like what Lea meant. Anyway, in defense of Pinoy CSRs, I also get lots of really good ones! I couldn't even tell at first until he/she starts to use old and formal conversational English words. Medyo di kasi updated ang mga Pinoy sa casual conversation skills and the latest US domestic affairs news. Yung tinatawag na "slang" dito, which is iba ibig sabihin sa Pinas lol. Slang in the US means contemporary, informal language or lingo, not the way of pronouncing words. Anyway, we all hate robocalls and other sales pitches by live agents, kaya it doesn't matter whatever accent it was made!

If you got the accent, that is good. But if you can't be understood because you spoke as if you just want to lessen your average handling time by breezing through it, then you'd earn the ire of the customer.

Ganyan din ang experience ko sa mga Pinoy call center reps. Nagugulat pa sila pag tinatanong ko kung taga saan sila, pano ko raw nalaman na Pinoy sila. But honestly, Pinoys are the friendliest and most respectful cc reps in the business.

Hun, of course clarity is everything. How else would you have a proper conversation if you can't make heads or tails of what the other person is saying? Indians and Russians sound somewhat British when they speak English. The Chinese from mainland may sound sharp at times, but those from Hong Kong are easy to understand.

Ako here in the US bihira lang ko maka encounter ng pinoy na di maintindihan english, Indian pa. Yes, they are trying hard hard to make an American accent maybe because some American people will freak out knowing that the tech support is on the other side of the world and not locally present. I know there is that kind of issue. Filipinos are the most courteous, patient customer support I have experienced and for that they're doing their job really well, that's what I'm proud of.
I've been in the industry for 10 years now. Kahit neutral accent ako, I make sure I enuciate words correctly coz that way, maint8ndihan ka talaga. at Yan din Ang tinuturo ko sa mga bago. Pero amazed pa Rin ako sa mga kasamahan ko na Parang mga Americans magsalita with correct enunciation. P3ro Yung iba, exactly the way Lea described ---Medyo off talaga.
What's with the "American Accent" anyway? American's accent carries from State to State. How about, The British accent which also varies from place to place, Australian, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa... There's more to it than just the accent. Go to courtrise that were colonised by the British Empire. They speak English just like a native speaker but they have their own accent. Does it matter? No, it doesn't. It matters only to the dimwitted who think accent is the be all and end all.
I am a csr myself, and kahit ako naiistress sa mga kasama kong pilit iniiba yung accent. Actually mas maiintindihan nga pag natural lang yung pageenglish.

I was there during that time, hindi lang ako umimik. Fast forward one day, dumating siya sa office at ako ang na sa harapan, I confronted her sabi ko hindi ba obvious na Asian ako so bakit ka pa nagtataka? At sabi na from Poland siya at iba din ang accent niya, so ang sagot ko well we have to suck it up and try to understand each other. Tapos I asked her if she ever visited the Philippines before because if she will in the future people there will never bash her accent nor discriminate her as a person. Natameme ang loka.

But there's this one call center agent based sa Cebu I talked to while I tried to book a flight/hotel, sobrang galing niya, very impressive yung english niya, akala ko kana, bisaya pala, but she was really good.

Pero paano nila malalaman na phone number ng isang pinoy kagaya ni leah yong tatawagan nila? There's no way for them to know the race of their customer right? So sana intindihin nalang ni leah kasi malay niya na baka hindi lang maganda ang reception during that time or baka nabulol lang yong agent. Isa pa ang mag-TH is a must sa pinasukan nilang work for their american customers. So why laglag your own kababayan? Filipino way nga naman oh. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!
Wow ha, dissing kapwa pinoy for doing her job. Call center agents are required to speak and as much as possible, sound like an American but with neutral accent. Palibhasa you didn't have to do that to feed your self and family. Will it hurt to just keep your mouth shut for once?
Hirap kase sa mga pinoy, crab mentality tlga, mga american nga di nmn tuwid sa mga grammars and speech. Pero tyu mga pinoy konting mali sa grammar akala mo mga diyos sa pag tatama ng english language.
Kung same spiel lang naman ang mga CSR everyday(or everynight), I am sure they will pronounce it with clarity. It depends. Ang iba lang kasi, akala mo hinahabol ng aso pag nagsalita. Just my opinion.

DeleteAko may nakausap na call center agent na Pinoy trying to sound American with a southern twang. Nakakaloka talaga yung usap namin because I knew he was Pinoy, but I think customers cannot ask them to speak Filipino, ganon yata yun. Anyway, it was just such a strange experience for me to speak to a kababayan who sort of garbled English with a southern accent. But to be fair, I was pleased with how accommodating he was, and he also politely repeated himself whenever I asked him to reiterate what he said. At least hindi nainis or nagtono na naiinis kapag pinapa clarify ko siya magsalita.

I spoke to an agent who tried his best to speak with a twang. Finally, I asked him if he's Filipino. He said "opo". He was very excited and we transacted our business in Tagalog. Much was accomplished and my problem was resolved in a timely manner. We spent the rest of our time talking from how's the weather to where in the US do I live. Nice man. Ha ha.

I really don't have an issue with Filipino call center agents. I feel that that industry has grown into the biggest employer of Filipins because of the English speaking abilities of Pinoys. If American companies chose Pinoys, why be choosy and judgmental. My only beef with Filipino English speakers is the use of "maam, sir, actually, though, in fairness". Those are just what are at the top of my head right now, pero marami pang words and phrases that has been " bastardized" by TH mag English Pinoys.

DeleteIn defense of Filipino call center agents, compared to those that are from India, the Filipino CSAs are more courteous and charming. Those from India are mostly snotty. It's just the Filipinos who notice the put on accent. Most Caucasians don't take notice instead they think it is an accent. Baka naman ang phone line ni Ms Lea ang may problema. I am not a CSA marami lang akong encounters with them and I don't mind their accents or their put on American accent what is important to me are these things: courtesy, humor and patience, knowledge of the product I call about and ability to resolve the issue.

Anyway, in defense of Pinoy CSRs, I also get lots of really good ones! I couldn't even tell at first until he/she starts to use old and formal conversational English words. Medyo di kasi updated ang mga Pinoy sa casual conversation skills and the latest US domestic affairs news. Yung tinatawag na "slang" dito, which is iba ibig sabihin sa Pinas lol. Slang in the US means contemporary, informal language or lingo, not the way of pronouncing words. Anyway, we all hate robocalls and other sales pitches by live agents, kaya it doesn't matter whatever accent it was made!

Indians and Russians sound somewhat British when they speak English. The Chinese from mainland may sound sharp at times, but those from Hong Kong are easy to understand.

ReplyDeleteAko here in the US bihira lang ko maka encounter ng pinoy na di maintindihan english, Indian pa. Yes, they are trying hard hard to make an American accent maybe because some American people will freak out knowing that the tech support is on the other side of the world and not locally present. I know there is that kind of issue. Filipinos are the most courteous, patient customer support I have experienced and for that they're doing their job really well, that's what I'm proud of.
ReplyDeleteI've been in the industry for 10 years now. Kahit neutral accent ako, I make sure I enuciate words correctly coz that way, maint8ndihan ka talaga. at Yan din Ang tinuturo ko sa mga bago. Pero amazed pa Rin ako sa mga kasamahan ko na Parang mga Americans magsalita with correct enunciation. P3ro Yung iba, exactly the way Lea described ---Medyo off talaga.

There's more to it than just the accent. Go to courtrise that were colonised by the British Empire. They speak English just like a native speaker but they have their own accent. Does it matter? No, it doesn't. It matters only to the dimwitted who think accent is the be all and end all.
I am a csr myself, and kahit ako naiistress sa mga kasama kong pilit iniiba yung accent. Actually mas maiintindihan nga pag natural lang yung pageenglish.

Saka yung iba naman hindi binababa yung call dahil bawal yon, minsan talaga yung system nagkakaproblem kaya napuputol yung line. Nag work na ko sa local telco company at yung isa naman international. Yung sa international, tinuruan talaga kami na mag pronounce ng innernational or cenner, etc....

Most of them nakaranas na ng discrimination mula sa mga Kano lalo na pag natunugan nilang Pinoy ang kausap nila. Kaya kahit trying hard ang dating, pinipilit nilang makuha 'yung American accent para lang hindi sila laitin, bagsakan ng phone, at murahin ng mga customers.

DeleteEh ako nga may nanlait sakin na American-polish eh. Nagtataka daw siya kung bakit daw hindi niya ako maintindihan samantalang naiintindihan niya yong American workmate ko. I was there during that time, hindi lang ako umimik. Fast forward one day, dumating siya sa office at ako ang na sa harapan, I confronted her sabi ko hindi ba obvious na Asian ako so bakit ka pa nagtataka? At sabi na from Poland siya at iba din ang accent niya, so ang sagot ko well we have to suck it up and try to understand each other. Tapos I asked her if she ever visited the Philippines before because if she will in the future people there will never bash her accent nor discriminate her as a person. Natameme ang loka.

But there's this one call center agent based sa Cebu I talked to while I tried to book a flight/hotel, sobrang galing niya, very impressive yung english niya, akala ko kana, bisaya pala, but she was really good.

Pero paano nila malalaman na phone number ng isang pinoy kagaya ni leah yong tatawagan nila? There's no way for them to know the race of their customer right? So sana intindihin nalang ni leah kasi malay niya na baka hindi lang maganda ang reception during that time or baka nabulol lang yong agent. Isa pa ang mag-TH is a must sa pinasukan nilang work for their american customers. So why laglag your own kababayan? Filipino way nga naman oh. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!
ReplyDeleteWow ha, dissing kapwa pinoy for doing her job. Call center agents are required to speak and as much as possible, sound like an American but with neutral accent. Palibhasa you didn't have to do that to feed your self and family. Will it hurt to just keep your mouth shut for once?
