It was actually an analogy of what Jesus has made for us. The cross symbolizes that the eternal death that men should've suffered was taken by Jesus- rescuing all of us from sin (death= eternal separation from Our Father).
What Jesus suffered in the cross (a sinless man dying for living-sinful men) is a symbol of a bridge that helps us cross to the side where God is, because the natural link that connects us to God was destroyed due to sins.
I hope you can understand how happy this person should be (such that he wanted to show Jesus' gift by the way of the cross) now that He has reconnected this person to God by being freed from sin because of what Jesus made for him..for us :)
