Grab Philippines said on Saturday, October 28, that one of their partner drivers was killed by unidentified suspects who also took the driver's car.
The driver was Gerardo Amolato Maquidato Jr who was shot and killed evening of Thursday, October 26, by unidentified suspects who booked and rode as regular passengers.
In a statement, Grab Philippines cited an initial police report which said that a witness heard gunshots 7:50 pm on Thursday and saw the lifeless Maquidato pushed out of his silver Toyota Innova along Bonanza Street in Pasay City.
Rappler asked if Grab has details of Maquidato's last passenger, as passenger information is stored into the transport app.
Grab Spokesperson Fiona Nicolas said they have provided the Philippine National Police (PNP) records from their system.
"Grab provided and will provide any information PNP requires to ensure that justice will be served," Nicolas said.
Grab added that they have recorded 6 cases of carnapping incidents involving their partner-drivers. The suspects all booked and rode like regular passengers.
Maquidato was one of Grab Philippines' driver awardees, recognized for giving a courtesy ride to a sick passenger.
A Facebook post went viral in August 2016 commending Maquidato for picking up a diabetes patient on her way to pick up bags of blood for her dialysis. Maquidato did not charge his passenger for fare out of kindness.
Grab Philippines said Prima Ornum, the diabetes patient, has passed away but her relatives had the chance to thank Maquidato in person during his awarding.
"Our prayers and sympathies go out to Mr Maquidato’s family. He was a good father to his 4 children, a good friend to many of his fellow drivers, and a good driver who was always willing to outserve his passengers. He will be missed," Grab Philippines said.
"Meanwhile, Grab has taken steps (toward) working on a tech solution that would decrease, if not completely hamper, the chances of carnapping incidents involving Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS) – that have apparently been the latest target of lawless elements," Grab Philippines added. – Rappler.com
What others are doing can only make you cry. I feel like if the people who does these things are not druggies they could be psychopaths and people should adress that mental health is very important talaga.Nakakaiyak. To think na may pamilyang naghihintay sa isang taong marangal magtrabaho.
ReplyDeleteMay karma sa taong pumatay as kanya.
Deletethis is bothersome and heartbreaking... dapat yung mga walang-pusong mamatay na tao ang pinapatay, hindi itong mababait.tskk... this is so sad.. i do not know this person but my heart bleeds. this is just so sad..i hope they catch the perpertrators.
ReplyDeletepls dont say that just because of this incident. in fact the crime rate decreased during duterte administration. get your facts straight first
DeleteLungkot te :-( bakit may gumagawa ng ganito. Hindi na lang magtrabaho ng mahusay.
DeletePlease dont turn this into a political discussion especially when you're misrepresenting the facts, 12:39. Murder rates are up. And thats actually beside the point kasi depravity ng society pinaguusapan, hindi ang administrasyon. Masyado kang defensive. Napaghahalata
Deletenakakalungkot naman to at nakaka worry in dahil ang anak ko ay mag start ng mag Grab din, we just bought a car for him.
DeleteRegular Grab passenger here. This is very sad news. My condolences to the family of Gerardo Maquidato.
ReplyDeleteThat's the problem when anyone, just anyone, can use any sim and register for an account. sa sobrang dali kumuha ng bagong sim at magregister on any name, di malabong mangyari talaga to. too bad for these people na nagtratrabaho nang marangal. they should also be protected. i hope they tighten the security on making accounts para sure din ang drivers sa safety nila.
ReplyDeleteNope. Mahigpit na sila ngayon. I tried registering my 2nd number and I can't register. Suspended daw. So natatrack ata nila pag same phone ka nagregister
Deleteas for now, ang pinaka madaling solution is taasan ang presyo ng sim cards. kesa sa 15 pesos lang. i know hindi pa rin solution un but better than a 15 pesos sim card na kahit minu-minuto eh pwede ka magpalit ng number. and sana pag bibili ng sim card, they ask for identification and ilagay sa records ng telco company. para hindi maabuso yung ganito. so sad this has to happen. and i did see it coming lalo na nung may nabasa ako na nag grabe share tapos may sinakay sila na ibang tao then yung totoong pasahero hindi pala sya yung sumakay dun.
ReplyDeleteCapitalist networks cares about their sales and coverage noon palang.
DeleteThanks Grab for protecting passengers, but please do something for your partners/drivers too. Registered and verified sila pero ang mga riders hindi, sana masolve and mabigyan ng justice to. RIP Sir!
ReplyDeleteHaaaay Pilipinas. Imagine yung nag carnapped ng car malalaki mga Tao yun my utak at maayos ang pangangatawan Tapos yung kind of work nila mag nakaw? Hinde sila makahanap ng maayos na trabaho.. s Totoo Lang pag nahuli mga ganito Tao dapat talaga pinapatay or putulan ng kamay e... naiinis ako Sa mga ganito incidente nag tratrabaho maayos yung driver Tapos papatayin at nanakawan pa. Grrrr
RIP manong. May your family find comfort during this very sad time

DeleteGrabe. Nakakalungkot naman ang balitang ito. I’m a regular Grab passenger for three years na. Polite and courteous yung mga nasasakyan kong Grab car drivers. Nakakagalit! Nakakaiyak sa galit at inis. Magtrabaho kayo! My condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Maquidato Jr.
ReplyDeleteTalamak na naman lalo na magpapasko. Ingat ingat guys
Rest in peace.
My heart bleeds for his family. RIP Gerardo.
ReplyDeleteThis broke my heart. Truly a senseless horrifying crime by people that are pure evil! Does he have a family who depends on him?Is there a fundraising that we can donate?
At authentication thru email and text.
ReplyDeleteSenseless killing should stop. Nag wwork ng maayos yung driver tapos papatayin pa! I hope those guys will rot in hell!
Karma is a b***h. Hopefully they catch the suspects ...
ReplyDeleteOnly in the Philippines
ReplyDeleteRIP Gerardo Maquisato Jr. May the Lord bless your family with His peace, comfort and strength.
ReplyDeletePaano na ang 4 na anak :(
