Here's the bottom line: It is--and has always been--the viewers' choice. Always.
When filmmakers allow their work to be viewed in cinemas, they shouldn't expect everybody to watch it. It doesn't matter if it is a commercial film or otherwise, pinalabas mo na yan eh, it is beyond your control what the public will wants to do with your "product." Regardless of how much marketing efforts you put in to get your product out there, the public will decide what to do with it. It's simply part of he territory.
So, why do they act so surprised and outraged every time; and protest on social media about the box office outcomes? They even take it further by disparaging the "unsophisticated audience" who chose to not watch their films, as well as those who produced the higher-grossing films.
Obviously, their level of disappointment is so high because they expect too much. I get it that they think their film is the best, but again, if the public's choice is to watch simple and shallow plots then that's it. It couldn't be more simple than that.
By and large, movies are deemed entertainment by majority of the Filipino people, and a bonding experience by members of a family unit especially during Christmastime. Parents do not require highfalutin themes or plots, to enjoy a couple of hours with their children laughing inside the movie house. There is a specific audience who appreciate art films, and one cannot impose on the majority to "appreciate" something they simply do not choose. It doesn't mean that he film is bad, it's just not their cup of tea.
Lastly, I think it is very important that they tone down the aggressive protestations and learn to respect the viewing public's choice. A lot are turned-off by these social media outbursts, because there is also a tinge of hypocrisy in it. They can slice it and dice it however they want, but in the end all they want is to take a big piece of the box office pie--it's still all about money for them in the end. #theheartofthematter
Agree 2:15. The critics of MMFF and of commercial Philippine cinema in general, realize that it's a business, BUT they like to dance around the issue when it comes to the issue of how box office returns come into play, when they impose their philosophies on the majority.
Bat kelangan pa bastosin mga me gusto manood ke Vice at Bossing? Las yer pati si Mother Lily binastos. Ano yon kapag ininsulto mo ba yung tao at tinawag mong bobo at basura taste, akala mo ba gugustohin nun manood ng pelikula mo? Natural Hinde! -OFW
Or baka alala nila kapag nagbayad kukunin na sila agad. Parang lagay lang ganon.
Kasi nga fair ang labanan last year, walang politika. The committee last year was true to their word of selecting only finished films, and with artistry as the main criterion. E ngayon, sobra ang politika. Hindi pa tapos yung pelikula, nakapasok na.
@10:47 The proof is in the pudding. Wag kami, we want growth.
Agree with you 11:06. But you really can't blame them kasi marami talaga na ang pagkakaintindi eh paramihan ng kinita. But it's not. I hope people will get to realize one day na people like Eric Matti actually cares so much for the craft and the viewing public. Na they get to realize how much time and effort it takes to make a quality movie from the script, to the execution, the camera angles, editing, soundtrack - lahat yan. It takes a lot of dedication and respect for the viewing public to come up with a quality film. Because it is always easy to just use a time and tested formula na wala na masyadong effort. Really selfish motives.
Compare that sa wala ka nga masyado kinita at alam mong wala, pero you still pour in a lot to come up with that movie kasi naniniwala ka na the audience kahit isa lang sha or sampu sila, na that movie could change their lives, could affect the way they think. Na may lasting effect sa buhay nila. May kamulatan.
Because it is what it is. Tanggalin na yung artistry sa equation, dahil at the end of the day, profit lang yan lahat which only a few would benefit from.
Sad to say, walang kwentang yung entry ni Direk last year na Seklusyon.
Mag Hollywood and Korean movies muna for December . wohoooooo. Kundi Everwing tournament.
He wants to put a stop to the dumbing down of the masses.

2:15 That makes sense. Kahit mahaba ang comment mo, binasa ko, partida pa na I'm indifferent about the MMFF social media wars.

Deleteand *PRO kita* uy kinalimutan. HAHAHA
ReplyDeleteYou're actually right.
DeleteAng daming hanash ni Matti pero in the end, pera pera Lang rin naman yan sa kanya.
Ang daming satsat ni direk samantalang nung sila sila lang naka pasok sa mmff last year wala namn satsat ang mga direktor na sobra sobrang naapektuhan
ReplyDeleteKasi nga fair ang labanan last year, walang politika. The committee last year was true to their word of selecting only finished films, and with artistry as the main criterion. E ngayon, sobra ang politika. Hindi pa tapos yung pelikula, nakapasok na.

DeleteAnti corrupt pala eh bakit pati selection kinoquestion niyo? Hello committee? Aminin din na habol din ng indie film makers like you na kumita right?
ReplyDeleteNo.
DeletePag mahal mo pinaglalaban mo.

ReplyDeleteactually. mas basura pa ang seklusyon last year. ang OA umarte ng cast at walang kasense sense ang pelikula
DeleteToo much naman to say "walang kwenta" I liked Seklusyon.
DeleteBoring yung Seklusyon pati cinematography ng Saving Sally. Pangit din Kabisera. Sa Die Beautiful lang talaga ako naaliw.
DeleteHUH? I AM NOT PRO-INDIE? tama ba? so ayaw nya sa indie movies? whyyyy?
ReplyDeleteComprehension pls. Facepalm.
