Repost: Moonlight Wins Best Picture Oscar, After Warren Beatty Gives Award to La La Land

Moonlight has won the best picture Oscar in an unlikely victory, sensationally defeating the strong favourite La La Land.

This was after Faye Dunaway read out La La Land as the victor – and the cast and crew took to the stage and completed many of their acceptance speeches. Chaos then reigned as Warren Beatty, with whom Dunaway had presented the prize, returned to the stage to admit their mistake.

“I wasn’t trying to be funny,” said Beatty, explaining that they had been handed the previous winner’s envelope – for Emma Stone’s La La Land victory. “That’s why I looked at Faye for a really long time,” said Beatty.

Directed by Barry Jenkins and adapted from an unpublished playscript by Tarell Alvin McCraney, Moonlight won near-universal critical plaudits for its depiction of the coming of age of a gay black teenager from a rough neighbourhood in Miami.

Moonlight premiered at the Telluride film festival in 2016, and generated Oscar momentum straightaway, winning a string of awards including best drama at the Golden Globes and best feature at the Gotham awards.

It defeated nine other films in the Oscar race: apart from hot favourite La La Land, it also beat Kenneth Lonergan’s grief drama Manchester by the Sea and the commercially successful Hidden Figures, about black female mathematicians who worked on Nasa’s moon mission in the 1960s.

This makes Moonlight the lowest-budget best picture winner of all time: made for $1.6m, so easily trumping its nearest rival, Precious, whose budget was between $6.5-$10m.

  1. I don't blame Faye or Warren for this, the real problem is the card, look at how small the "category" is and how its placed all the way at the bottom.

    1. They were given the wrong envelope. It's not really their fault.

    2. Yup someone handed them another copy of the best actress category. May dalawang suit cases daw yan, isa para sa mga duplicate kaya iinvestigate nila kung paano or kung sino nagbigay ng envelope.

    3. Warren knew it was the wrong envelope, why not he took a moment and clarify to the production staff instead of giving to his co-presentor to read. I will not blame Faye as she only has that short glance to the envelope.

    4. Wala na kasing appeal ang Oscars nagdwindle na. Anyway both films are really worthy for those who are insomniac. Makakatulog kayo sa sobrang kaboringan!

  2. Liked how they handled the mistake. Congratulations to all the nominated movies!

  3. Now I understand why Warren was looking for another paper inside the envelope because he saw Emma Stone's name for Lala Land as winner for Best Picture. He refused to read it but Faye took the paper and read it aloud after seeing Lala Land written on it. It's not their fault, it's the production staff's fault for handing them the wrong envelope.

    2. 4:50 I think 3:40 is being sarcastic. Si Pia kasi ang may sabi non. Actually, popular ang term na ginamit niya. Sabi ni Pia kay Steve during their short talk on stage dba, "Thank you for making me the most popular Miss Universe".

  6. I thought La La Land is far more deserving than Moonlight. It's just that Moonlight winning this year's best picture is "politically correct". Wahahahahaha.

    1. It seems that every movie with black actors, crew and staff is going to win in every award-giving bodies na, no?

Hacksaw Bridge, Silence were good films rin kaya with good directors at the helm.

La La Land won pa over them.

    4. Moonlight is not just a politically correct choice, its really the best film in this year's roster. Sana napanood mo na muna bago ka nagcomment. Its subtle yet engaging, its empathy building and gives a really humanizing look on the marginal lives of those who are left behind at the intersection of straight white male privilege. Yung mga nabanggit mo, those are fantasies and anxieties of that white male privilege, na honestly, sobrang boring. Itong Moonlight, its Boyhood that right, done well.
