Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz is not a judge in the 65th Miss Universe competition, but the first Filipina beauty queen to bring home the crown already has her picks for the top five.
Diaz said on top of her mind are the girls with whom she had interacted in the times she had attended the Miss Universe events.
Among those she named was Miss Universe Canada Siera Bearchell, but she said the 23-year-old beauty needs to shed some weight.
"If Canada could lose 8 pounds, I love her face. Am I right? She’s beautiful," she said in an interview with ANC's Headstart on Friday.
Asked if Miss Canada would really have to lose that much, Diaz relented and said “Okay, five.”
Diaz also said she finds Miss Venezuela, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Thailand, and Miss China "beautiful" and "gorgeous."
She also believes the Philippines' bet, Maxine Medina, could be among the top contenders, but admitted that she would only be a "saling pusa" (token candidate).
"She cannot nga be the winner. She can be first runner-up. I hope I’m proven wrong for the first time in my life. I want her to win. I want us to be so proud, but you know, that’s life," she said.
"We are the host. The host country cannot [win]. I cannot serve lechon and bring it back to my kitchen kasi I’m giving it to you," she added.
Winner or not we should all be proud of Maxine.

DeleteBoth of her daughters are smart which unfortunately cannot be transferred . There is a big difference between a wish and reality. The crown needs to be given to the most deserving candidate and unfortunately wish you may it is not her. People will support the candidate that they think deserves to win so therefore stop trying to force people to vote for your candidate. Unfortunately the Philippines candidate is so lacking in many aspects. That is the hard truth . Better luck next time. Learn to accept your losses.

ReplyDeleteWhether she's telling the truth or not, I'd rather Gloria just shut her mouth. This is not the time to spout. Telling all the shortcomings of the country's candidate just few days away the main competition event just seems to be tacky and tactless. Besides, she could have at least given the time a couple of months to assist in the training of Maxine if she is that bothered with the present rep's comprehension skills. All the candidates have equal chances to win the crown, just that they have to show the judges why they deserve to get to the next tier. That includes the country host's rep.

Nangyari na rin ito noong 2001 when Miss Puerto Rico (Denise Quinones) won Miss Universe in her home country. Sa back-to-back wins naman once pa lang ito nangyari noong 2008 - 2009 when Dayana Mendoza and Stefania Fernandez both from Venezuela achieved the first ever back-to-back Miss Universe titles. Yun nga lang Bahamas ang host country noong 2009 at di Venezuela. Anything is possible Tita Glo, I've seen the preliminaries last night and Maxine was a stand-out in both swimsuit and evening gown competition among the 87 candidates.

ReplyDeleteAlthough I agree that a Miss Universe winner should be able to express herself clearly and relay her messages through various advocacies..hindi naman kailangan English lang ang alam na language. The winner travels globally and not everyone speaks and understands English. Yes, Q&A is a big factor in deciding the winner, BUT remember Olivia Culpo where Janine outdid her during the Q&A??? She stammered at parang walang sense ang sinagot pero jusko wagi ang lola! I find Maxine so gorgeous. Her looks will grow on you at very raw ang ganda. She slayed during the prelims. Thailand, Venezuela & Colombia who are among the top contenders can't speak English fluently. Sad na kapwa Pinoy ang super critics..Americans are grammatically incorrect when they speak.

Hindi palibhasa hindi magaling mag english hindi na naka graduate. Ang daming engineers, accountants and other professionals naka trabaho ko na ilan sa kanila hindi magaling sa English pero highly competent sa field nila.
