Over the past few days, Gloria Diaz, Miss Universe 1969, created a social media firestorm when she said that Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina has a "one-in-a-million" chance of winning the upcoming 65th Miss Universe competition.
But Diaz said her assessment, which she explained is based on the fact that no country other than the US and some US territories has ever had their candidate win in home soil, has been grossly misunderstood.
In an interview with DZMM, Diaz at first said she would be "telling a lie" if she asserted that Medina is a surefire bet to succeed Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Universe 2015, and earn the Philippines its first back-to-back titles in the pageant's history.
"Like I always say, everybody has a chance. But I think, out of everyone, Maxine will have the least," she told radio hosts Ogie Diaz and MJ Felipe, "But of course there can be an exception. There can be one exception and I hope this is the exception. People don't understand that it's very rare (for a host country's candidate to win)."
Laughing, she continued: "Bakit ko pa kayo bobolahin? But people are misunderstanding that I don't like Maxine. Don't forget that Maxine looks like Isabelle (Diaz's daughter), I mean they are the same type: Filipina beauty, morena and all that. She (Maxine) is beautiful at ang ganda pa nga gown niya. It looks so nice, her gown and make-up. But don't forget that we are the host."
Diaz has repeatedly defended herself by insisting that the only host delegate that won the pageant came from the US, or its other territories such as Puerto Rico.
According to Diaz's critics, her opinion, which she gave after meeting the candidates this year for the first time after the Governor's Ball, just sounded rather "bitter" and does not help Medina's chances at all.
"I'll be rooting for Maxine, people don't realize that," Diaz reiterated when asked if she will be watching the coronation day on Monday.
The beauty queen also remained in a joking mood when prodded for her message to her critics. "Sige na nga, I was just joking. Actually, Maxine is the one talaga who is going to win. Oh, OK na ba sila? Bakit? Si (President Rodrigo) Duterte nga nagbabago ang isip, eh 'di ako rin."
Nakakawala kasi ng respeto pagkuda nya eh! Parang di nya kalahi si Maxine kung makapg salita sya.

It is very true na pag sa sarili mong bansa ginanap ang beauty contest, mas mababa ang chance na ikaw ang magiging winner. Para bang delikadesa ang basehan. Puwede pang finalist. Otherwise sasabihin naman na may nangyaring manipulation. Kung sa ibang bansa ginanap ang beauty contest, mas may chance siya. Yun lang ang ibig sabihin mi Ms Gloria Diaz.
DeleteAng pagho-host ba ng Pilipinas ng MU is para papanalunin lang si Maxine? Parang lahat na lang kasi gusto manalo si Maxine. It's unfair for the other girls. And it does not look good to in other countries. My point is, let us all savor the hosting of MU after 23 years and not make it like a celebration for Maxine to win.

ReplyDeleteActually I understand na gusto syempre ng mga filipinos na manalo si MAxine. Kaso the odds are Miss Philippines na ang present holder ng title and at the same time host counntry ang Philippines. It doesnt mean that it cant happen pero the chances of winning under all the circumstances is medyo rare . I understand Miss Gloria Diaz. Kasi I think when you become Miss Universe medyo mas malawak ang point of view mo. You are not just MIss Philippines. So kung magaadvice ka its for everyone cause youve been there kaya mas sympathetic sya sa lahat ng candidates. As for Maxine. its difficult not to compare her to Pia. Pia kasi having competed several times she became more and more determined each year na siguro also helped her sa confidence nya. Pia during the competition really excelled sa swimsuit and especially sa Q & A.. And we have to remember maraming contestants who are all Beauty Queens in their own right. It is not bad if MAxine gets a tranlator kaso that would make her the first to use a translator na taga Pilipinas. ALL the other asian country kapag sinasabi who is The best asian country who can speak well in English. Philippines ang alam nila. To be honest and fair. Looking at all the candidates lahat may laban. Maxine would have to be her best in everyway because all of them are there to compete and they are the best from their country. IT is good to be confident but not too much na mayabang na ang dating tulad nung nakalaban ni Pia na di ko nasasabihin ang name..lol.Kung ako in my opinion may laban naman si maxine. Pero i didnt like yung gown na green nya. Medyo understated. You really dont want the gown to overshadow you, but you want it to let you shine, kaso sobra ang pagkasimple wala masyado nang dating. YUng iba kasi ang gaganda ng gowns.. Sana kung makapasok sya sa semis mas maganda yung design. Good Luck!!!

DeleteAlthough I, too, believe that Maxine has a very slim chance of bagging the crown, I think Ms. Diaz should stop being so negative and quit putting down Maxine everytime she gets, especially with the coronation night so close. Now she is just being condescending. She should be more like Pia, who has been humble and supportive this whole time. FYI, belle and Maxine do not look alike-- they are just both morenas and that's it. Don't justify your previous statements just because of that.

ReplyDeleteI like that she is giving her opinion based on facts. That host countries don't usually wear the crown for that particular year. In beauty pageants, home-court advantage is actually subject to a lot of scrutiny.
