Jury members in the 69th Cannes film festival defended their decision to name Jaclyn Jose as this year’s best actress winner for her performance in the Brillante Mendoza film “Ma’ Rosa.”
According to an article by Indie Wire, several critics disagreed with Jose’s win since they felt that her character in “Ma’ Rosa” was just a supporting role.
But jury member, veteran Hollywood actor Donald Sutherland, was quick to refute this.
“The critics were wrong. It's a big-time leading role,” Indie Wire quoted Sutherland as saying.
This was echoed by fellow jury member Arnaud Desplechin, who said Jose “is the film” and "she broke my heart."
Aside from Sutherland and Desplechin, the other members of the jury were George Miller, Kirsten Dunst, Valeria Golino, Mads Mikkelsen, Laszuo Nemes, Vanessa Paradis and Katayoon Shahabi.
Jose, who also appeared in Mendoza’s Cannes 2008 entry “Serbis,” is the first Filipino to receive the best actress award in the prestigious film festival.
Among those she was up against were Hollywood stars Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart and French actresses Isabelle Hupert and Marion Cotillard.
During the photo call of the movie “Ma’ Rosa,” Jose told ABS-CBN News that she was not expecting to win since it was already a dream come true to be back in Cannes with her daughter, actress Andi Eigenmann, who also plays her daughter in the movie.
"I dreamt of this, that someday I'm coming back with my daughter…Hindi pa siya artista noon,” she said.
Aside from Jose, "Ma' Rosa" also stars Julio Diaz, Andi Eigenmann, Felix Roco, and Jomari Angeles.
The film tells the story of a poor Manila neighborhood stall holder who sells drugs on the side with her husband to make ends meet.
The couple gets arrested, leaving their four children to try and buy their parents' freedom from corrupt policemen. – with a report from Rose Eclarinal, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau
Anyway I'm so happy pa rin talaga at di maka move on para kay Ms Jaclyn Jose. Congrats Madam! I'm proud of you!
ReplyDelete-Ms Hanash 2016
who is neil sese at kung makahanash ka 12:25 ay inam?
DeleteTulog na Neil
DeleteHuwag ng maghabol. Best actress na si jacklyn jose and she deserve it
ReplyDeleteTo be defended by The Donald Sutherland is something! You deserved it Jaclyn! What an honor! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteNakaka touch naman. Ipinagtanggol pa sya ng Jurors. Dito mo talaga makikita yung credibility at integrity ng cannes na hindi mapupulitika at talagang for the sake of the art talaga sila. Thanks from the Ph! Congrats to Ms Jaclyn Jose and Direk Brillante!!
ReplyDeleteI always have tears everytime I watch your video. That moment when the Head of the Jury called your name and you were genuinely shocked I felt a sense of vindication for the Filipino talent since for a long time we have not been recognized in a major film festival like Cannes until now.Although Brillante Mendoza already cracked the ceiling for the Director prize but you made history for the best actress category. I believe your win is a wakeup call to the world that the Philippines is a country of great actors and actresses.
ReplyDeletecongrats Ms.jaclyn Jose
ReplyDeleteIndieWire lang naman ang kumukuda. Gaano sila ka-sure na yung "gasp" is because the aurdience was disappointed?
ReplyDeleteIf you read the European publications, there was a large amount of shock with the winners' list, but mostly it was a reaction to the Palm D'Or and the silver prix award. The films the critics loved were mostly snubbed. No one really was questioning Jaclyn Jose's acting competence. It was more "no one was expecting this winner list" sort of thing.
DeleteI specifically love how Mad pronounced Jaclyn's name when she won...sounded like shoklyn khjose..I loveeee Hannibal!!
ReplyDeleteNatawa ko sa Shoklyn. Hahahahahahaha!
DeleteHhahahaha! But true no? Ganun talaga pronunciation nya. 😄 Shoklyn. I love french accent
Congrats Ms. Jose!
ReplyDeletewhen the hunger games's antagonist was on your side? just wow. congratulations!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd the odds are being on her favour.
DeleteTitle role tapos support? As is where is acting for the win!
Lels
DeleteTo some foreigners kasi all Filipinos look alike. Hindi nila ma distinguish yung isa from the other. Parang tayo minsan magkakamukha yung ibang lahi.
DeleteIt's baffling the level of stupidity these so-called critics have for them to consider the role of Jaclyn as merely a supporting one.
ReplyDeleteThe film's title is "Ma' Rosa" and Jaclyn plays the role of Rosa.
These "critics" probably bought their diplomas in some dark alley.
Anybody can be a critic. Diplomas ard optionsl.
DeleteHindi naman ito Critics Choice Award dapat respect the Cannes jury's decision.
ReplyDeleteVanessa Paradis was one of the jurors pala? She's Johnny Depp's former wife. Also, why was Kristen Stewart even nominated? No acting skills naman siya? Walang depth and all?
ReplyDeleteI know i'm too technical but Vanessa Paradis was Ex-Partner. They were never married.
DeleteAnon 1:14 so you're questioning the jury now about Kristen's Stewart? Maybe they saw something they are looking for that you don't see because you are not qualified to be a judge.
DeleteDonald Sutherland na yan ha. Dagdag mo pa si Mads Mikkelsen. Congrats, Miss Jaclyn Jose. Pinaparody lang ang acting style mo dati (including me hehe) pero now premyado na yan. Well-deserved win!
ReplyDeleteWon over Charlize Theron? Ay pak na pak! Nakakaproud, most liekly nakakaiyak!
ReplyDeleteAnd Marion Cotillard. Galing!
Yong iba kasi papanoorin lan nila yon movie kung kilala nila yon bida.
