Repost: Wharton: Yes, Roxas is Our 'Graduate'

Is he or isn’t he a “graduate” of the prestigious Wharton School?

It’s the latest question fielded against Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Manuel Roxas II, after his friend-turned-political foe Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte accused him of lying about his Wharton degree, a subchapter in a verbal tussle that saw the two presidential candidates challenge each other to a slap-fest, a fist fight, a gun duel, until Roxas eventually said it was best to focus on “issues.”

Rappler earlier confirmed that Roxas indeed earned a degree from the Wharton School, the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn)’s business school, as part of our fact-check involving claims of public officials about their degrees.

He graduated in 1979 with a degree in economics, majoring in finance.

On his official website for his 2016 presidential campaign, it says “[Roxas] graduated from… the Wharton School of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania in 1979.”

But online, there were those who insisted Roxas did not have the right to claim himself a “graduate” of Wharton, since he only earned an "undergraduate" but not a graduate degree.

Duterte insisted on the same, telling reporters in an interview on Tuesday, December 15, that while Roxas can claim to have graduated from the UPenn, he can’t say he graduated from Wharton.

The mayor insisted: "Mar graduated at the University of Pennsylvania – that's correct – but he is never a graduate of Wharton as what he claims to be. A Wharton graduate is a person who finishes his masters degree at Wharton, meaning you are a graduate of MBA at Wharton. In your case, Mar, you are not, so don't claim to be a man you cannot be...because you are not. UPenn graduate ka (You are a UPenn graduate), and not Wharton!"

But Wharton does offer undergraduate degree courses.

And it turns out that Duterte and Filipinos online have the terms all wrong.

In an email to Rappler correspondent Raymon Dullana, Wharton said the terms “graduate” and “alumnus” are the same.

“The word 'graduate' and 'alumnus' are synonymous. Wharton offers both undergraduate and MBA degrees. Mr. Roxas received his undergraduate degree. An undergraduate degree is a pre-requisite for admission to nearly all accredited graduate schools including those that bestow an MBA,” Wharton School Media Relations Director Peter Winicov said in an email.

Rappler asked Winicov whether a person who earned an undergraduate degree from the Wharton School would be called a "Wharton graduate."

He added:

The University of Pennsylvania Registrar confirmed Mr. Roxas’ Wharton degree as follows:

Name: Manuel "Mar" A. Roxas II

Wharton Undergraduate degree: Bachelor of Science in Economics, 1979

Major: Finance

A copy of the Wharton School’s 2006 Alumni Directory also lists “Manuel Araneta Roxas II,” then still a senator, as an alumnus of the business school.

Different political camps have criticized the exchange between the two presidential candidates, pointing out that it distracts from real issues at hand. Roxas said as much on Wednesday, December 16, calling on Duterte to end the word war and instead focus on their plans for the future.

    3. Sa US, pag sinabi mong UPENN graduate ka ibig sabihin, you got your college diploma from that school. Even when you receive a graduate degree from another school, you still say that you're a graduate of where you received your BS degree and you went to graduate school from wherever. I guess its a lost in translation, it depends where you are from on how you are going fo perceive Mar's claim.

Speaking as someone with an undergrad, a graduate and a professional degree and in the process of obtaining another graduate degree, and as someone who cannot vote for either Roxas or Duterte, I am siding with Roxas in this issue, mababaw as it is. When you say "graduate of" the Tagalog translation is "nag graduate sa" not "mayroong Graduate degree". "Wharton graduate" means graduated from Wharton, regardless of what degree it is.

Duterte is 70 so he is not going to like Marcos who will declare martial law and be president for 20 years. He was a lawyer and he was mayor for 22 years in Davao. People elected him by choice because he made serious changes in the city yet despite that he never got rich. He lives very simply. This makes him different from Marcos . . I hope people will unite and support him. A lot of people don't like his policies because they become rich through corruption. So, we should all help him achieve the necessary changes our country so desperately needs. He likes to joke around but he is not a fool. He got things done. That is what we need.

In the Philippines, magtatake pa ng Bar exam ang isang barrister, and alam natin kung gano kaliit ang passing rate ng Bar exam dito sa bansa natin. In order to pass, you should have a brain capable of memorizing and understanding different articles and statutes. Di ka matutulungan ng pera mo o kahit ano pa man. Si Mar Roxas college graduate sa isang expensive and prestigious school. Si Mayor Duterte, Lawyer. I prefer the latter.

    8. @ 8:35 My mom is a doctor (obstetrician) who also graduated from the University of the Philippines infact her educational background is on par with that who finished Masters and Phd. But when a filipino who graduated bachelors degree from another country meets my mom they give an impression that they are somehow "higher" and this I guess shows that eventhough you might think finishing school from a different country is more prestigious masterals will ALWAYS and STILL be higher than a bachelors degree. The difference is how we filipinos look up to an Ivy league school abroad so much and put down our own great schools in the Philippines. I know this, because I am now studying at an Ivy league school here abroad yet I see how filipinos who graduated from the PH can very much compete with those who are a product of the big schools here in the States.

    9. Alam na alam ko 10:25 . I am studying college here in abroad and I see how filipino's who directly graduated from the Philippines are also very good and can compete. I ask all of you, why? Is Tacloban not a part of the Philippines? Mayor duterte on the otherhand sent millions of money to help, he sent doctors and nurses aswell. At a times like that when you see people dead on the streets its hard to hope for some humanity to be honest, while Im typing this its very hard not to cry but Mayor duterte was there,he was one of our lights. So please kindly stop hearing from the media and hear out the person who was actually there to witness Roxas' shortcomings and unsympathetic acts.

    1. Not corrupt
    2. Cannot be bought
    3. Strong and fearless enough to fight the powerful, corrupt and lawless
    4. knowledgeable about the real problems that Filipinos face
    5. Educated but not desperate for power
    6. Has hands on experience in actually solving problems that Pinoys face.
So people decide who do you think among the candidates fit the criteria? Wharton or not Wharton is irrelevant to the issues Philippines face. I feel like we desperately need someone as tough and unconventional like duterte to solve Philippines unconventional problems. But we all need to unite and help him get things done because I know the other politicians will give him a hard time which is always the reason why nothing gets done.
