Alma Moreno ‘Hurt’ by Internet Bashing over Controversial TV Interview

Parañaque councilor and senatorial aspirant Alma Moreno on Thursday admitted being ‘hurt’ by the public's harsh reactions to her controversial TV interview last week.

Interviewed by GMA News, a teary-eyed Moreno said the incident has taken its toll not only on her but also on her family, who she said also felt slighted by the deluge of memes and comments generated by the now much-lampooned interview.

In the TV interview that tackled her senatorial bid, Moreno could be seen having a hard time responding to questions on a range of issues, from same-sex marriage, discrimination, and tax cuts to the Reproductive Health Act and the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law.

She claimed having "reservations" over the RH Law, but could not cite one when pressed for specifics. "Kailangan pa bang sagutin [yan]?" she instead asked.

Moreno, a former actress, also admitted "getting lost" over a question ("Teka, nawawala ako") and not having full grasp of certain issues ("Actually, hindi pa ako napupunta doon").

She also suggested, though in jest, that couples should keep the lights on as a birth control measure.

The video of her interview became viral, as netizens started churning out countless versions of memes that poke fun at her. The interview also resulted in her own hashtag #PrayForAlma, borrowing from the #PrayForParis hashtag.

Moreno admitted she might not be as well-read and intelligent as other politicians, but said that does not make her less of a genuine public servant.

In a speech she delivered at the covered court of Barangay Sun Valley in Parañaque on Thursday, Moreno once again pointed out how hurt she was by the ridicule she has been receiving, but also thanked those who came rushing to her side.

Moreno, an actress-turned-politician, is running in the 2016 elections under the ticket of presidential bet Vice President Jejomar Binay's United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).

Meanwhile, in her Instagram account, the interviewer, broadcast journalist Karen Davila, defended her questioning of Moreno after several netizens accused her of being harsh to the Parañaque official.

“When someone is running for higher office - they must have an understanding of issues. This is a standard we owe to the Filipino people," she said.

She also said she "tried to help" by using Tagalog instead of English many times just to be able to keep the conversation easyflowing.

Definitely hindi pang Fast Talk ang itatanong sayo kundi mga current events & issues and anything related to your candidacy. Tama si Karen Davila: “When someone is running for higher office - they must have an understanding of issues. This is a standard we owe to the Filipino people,"

  53. If you want to help your constituents or the Pinoys, run for Barangay captain. hindi yata alam ni alma ang trabaho ng senator. it''s more on legislation so dapat may alam ka sa mga issues ng buong bansa. anong gagawin mo sa senado? ambisyosa masyado, ni hindi alam kung ano ang pinapasok.

  55. Ms. Moreno really doesn't get it, she doesn't have what it takes to take on a higher position at the moment and she should accept the fact that, that interview exposed her lack of basic knowledge on the issues that are of great importance to the people of the Philippines at present time. She should go read books, learn about important issues that affect lives of millions of Pilipinos that Ms. Moreno apparently would want to serve. Ms. Moreno the lives of these Pilipino people and their sensitivity is more important that yours if you really will seriously think hard about it. So juist take it and just shut up.

  57. Si Alma Moreno talaga ang magiging female version ni Tito Sotto, Jinggoy, Bong Revilla, at Lito Lapid ng Senado, and it's not bcos being an artista is something they all have in common, but because walang imik yang mga yan sa Senado eh.

  58. Moreno admitted she might not be as well-read and intelligent as other politicians, but said that does not make her less of a genuine public servant.

  61. Just another ignorant wanna-be celeb politician trying to use their popularity to get votes. Someone passionate about something will take the time and effort to research and learn. Moreover you know you' re appearing on a national TV interview yet you come unprepared? So bahala na, ganun ba? Ganun din ang magiging attitude sa senado?
Genuine ka ngang tumulong sa tao but you don't know anything about the issues that matter. You'll be eaten alive in politics. So don't bother Miss Alma, there's no point. Just be happy that you have that 'First Lady' notch in your CV, kahit wala ka namang inatupag o natutunan.

  66. Senate is a LAW-MAKING office, Senators craft and propose laws that intend to address issues. Shucks!

  67. Ms Alma you're self pity and "hurt" will not change the fact na HINDI KA TALAGA PWEDENG MAG SENATOR. . . sorry po . . .

  68. Ms. Alma Moreno, please if you care about this nation, if you really love the Filipino people, do us a favor. Do not run as a senator. The people have spoken, we cannot and will not let you be part of the legislative body.

If you think you are ready to be a senator because a president-wannabe or his political party told you so, please check his or their credibility (and moral background) first before you believe him or them. He might have put a close kin in that branch because of his name not of what she can deliver. BUT that is enough. It must not happen again. It will not happen again. Never again.

The majority of this nation has spoken. You are not welcome in the legislative. Maybe after six years only when you have understood by heart and mind what this country really needs. Maybe, maybe. Who knows...

  69. This paawa and balat-sibuyas drama reminds me of Lani Mercado when she cried as a first-time congressman of Cavite - nagrereklamo siya nung nagcomment ang isang co-congressman tungkol sa kakayahan nya.

  72. If you can't take the heat don't run for politics. The problem with you, Mrs. Moreno, isn't that you can't speak English well... the problem with you is you are so out of touch with the real issues affecting the people in the Philippines. You claim that you desire to better the Philippines... yet you lack the basic ability to understand the issues at hand. You don't even really have a stand.

  80. A councilor for 9 yrs and first lady for 9yrs are your reasons to qualify for a seat in the senate (law making body) yet u are not aware of the RH bill..true that being intelligent does not make u a genuine public servant but u should have the basic knowledge of the issues your country is facing..current events.. now if your goal is to be a genuine public servant then apply for a position in the government of which u are qualified baka pati utility worker eh hindi ka qualified kc most of them na ay college graduate..clerk nga eh need civil service eligibility...kaya mag volunteer ka na lng to prove ur love of country and its people... senate is a big no, u don't deserve tax payers money... meanwhile go take a crash course if your brain can comprehend...
