Question: Who Copied? Err, Got Inspired From Whom, Again? (Dion Lee vs Rajo Laurel vs 37 LA)

Fashion designer Rajo Laurel ranted on how his design, Iris, was being copied by a certain fashion house, 37 LA. Laurel even posted messages and photos in his Twitter account stating that he will be taking legal action and was already talking to his lawyer (Atty. Karen Jimeno, as indicated in the photo).

Further, Laurel wrote, "There's a huge difference from inspiration & Blatant copying & plagiarism. Plagiarism is a criminal act!"

Meanwhile, an FP reader sent the following photos of the work of Australian designer, Dion Lee. These fashion pieces were presented by Lee in 2013 for her Spring 2014 collection. Do note the interwoven design of the top.

    2. 12:04 sorry teh, inspiration lang yun ke 37LA just as Rajo is inspired by that Dion Lee. tignan mu yun waist line at neck line, halos pare-pareho iba-iba lang orientation, kun pipilitin ni Rajo yan, so may reason din yun Dion who designed it earlier to sue Rajo.

      Delete
    3. Nops fashion design is not protected with intellectual property law. It's not the same as songs, poetry and etc... That's why highstreet brands are able to get away copying haute couture.

      Delete
    4. A sales person from Zara told me weeks after fashion week Zara already has the same designs in it's stores. Im not a lawyer but can a designer like Rajo sue someone over a design ? Ano yun infringement , patent etc ..?

  27. Pero mukhang di nman 100% na ginaya ni rajo un kay Dion. Mukhang inspired lng nman. Di ba ang masama ay imitation? Pasensya na di ako familiar kung kelan pwedeng sabihin na imitation or inspiration.

  38. How hypocrite! As if he never copied from other designers! Kapal lang huh??? Totoo ngang galit ang kapwa MAGNANAKAW sa kapwa MAGNANAKAW! Have some nerve rajo!

    ReplyDelete
  39. The point here is exact copy ng design ni Rajo yung ginawa nung other designer. The Dion Lee design may be Rajo's inspiration but he made his own twist to it, he made an original design. Ganun naman talaga sa fashion, you can be inspired of another one's design but you should not blatantly copy it exactly the way it was presented. Yung sa other designer, the same talaga yung cut and style so that's definitely a no!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sus maka react. Ginaya mo lang din naman yan, Rajo! Wag ka nga!

  41. ang oa naman ng rajo laure! halatang ginaya niya rin si dion lee!!! so obvious!!! he's the copycat!

  47. So pag inspired ok lang? Yang "inspired" na yan is pinagandang somewhat copied. Tama na Rajo, nangongopya ka din ng designs ng iba.

  58. 1.) Spring/Summer fashion show is usually shown a year before its debut, so dion lee spring/summer 2014 is shown last sept/oct of 2013 and it will be available in the market by june/july 2014.

2.) there is no law that protects the designs in fashion or you can't patent your designs. otherwise, what we call little black dress or even a longsleeves polo will not be available to the masses because factories or companies has to pay the patent to owners of the designs thus making it more expensive.

3.) fashion designers are not just designing clothes, they are also creating techniques for them to have a unique style. rajo's interweave "bandage" top or what he calls iris top is similiar to dion lee's "twisting" technique.

    now, who copied who?!

Then, si Dion Lee naman, magsampa na rin ng demanda against Rajo for copying her designs, and the cause of action would be exactly what Rajo's is vs. the 37 LA designer.

  71. People often use the word "inspiration" para lang di masabi na nangopya sila even if the similarity is strikingly obvious. Di naman talaga maiiwasan to be influenced by other people's designs lalo na't if you're in the same line of business. But to say you used one artist's work as inspiration and to come up with an almost exact replica that's missing a stitch or two just to claim it as your own, dai sarili mo lang ang niloloko mo.

You can only use style and method to draw inspiration from but the rest should be a product of your artistry. - chismosang art director
