Hi Fashionpulis! I would just like to share to you an editorial column written by Fely Sicam. As a Nurse and an editorial writer who grew up with MD relatives I am disheartened with her irresponsible journalism since facts and evidences must substantiate her opinions.
Resident doctors are real doctors since they are already licensed but have not yet specialised to a specific field. Also, the first part of Client Assessment is history taking, that is why the Nurse asked them first what happened to the patient. If she only knew that Doctors and Nurses go through physical, emotional, mental and financial crisis just to practice their profession and do their passion.
Doctors and Nurses even other Allied Health Professionals deserve respect since we don't experience holidays, we don't get enough sleep, we are underpaid, we have less time spent with out families and we have the huge responsibility of saving lives.

DeleteOne of the first things to ask if the patient is able to converse, or for pediatric patients, the informant-parent/guardian or anyone who accompanied the patient, is the chief complaint. Hindi manghuhula ang mga doctors and nurses.

ReplyDeleteFely Sicam may have written in English but is no better than the rude doctor and nurse she describes. Parang pang FB status lang ang pagkakasulat nya. Hindi pang print media ang quality ng arguments- maski English pa pagkakasulat! Hindi pinag-isipan ng husto. Ang hihina ng arguments at napaka-one sided.
At para sa nagsulat sa FP- yes, everyone - regardless of occupation deserves respect. But just because you're tired , hungry and underpaid doesn't excuse rude behavior. It's a tough job, definitely. And it's even tougher to keep your cool pag nakakainis at demanding mga pasyente.
People can work to get certain titles but they earn respect from other people. Sicam referred to those balasubas nurses and doctors only as fake, not in general naman. Nilahat nya ba? Hindi naman diba? Butthurt much?

DeleteNurses probably dont get paid well, but of course doctors are paid so much more. Resident doctors just wait to finish their residency, and boom!... they are handsomely paid.

Medical workers aren't always in their best mood lalo na pag hospital work and not in consulting. 12 or more hour shifts sila and running on crackers and coffee lang and facing a lot of patients.

DeleteI agree with the poster, nurses and resident doctors don't get enough credit or respect they deserve while working the most ungodly hours with very little pay in compare to specialists doctors. Ms Fely if your patient friend was really sick he wouldn't have the time or energy to argue with either the nurse or the resident doctor. He probably met with a triage nurse who checks, observes and evaluates his condition before referring him to the duty doctor in the ER. This is common practise in most ERs around the world so unless you're bleeding heavily or lost conciousness, don't expect the ER staff to fawn over you just because you think you're entitled to special attention.

ReplyDeleteBaka naman first time lang ng columnist maka-encounter ng doktor kaya hindi nya alam ang proseso. Hindi po clairvouyant ang mga yan na titignan ka lang eh alam na ang problema mo. Baka nasobrahan lang ng kakapanood ng "House" kaya warped ang idea nya about the medical profession.

DeleteThat's the problem in this generation, malpractice of democracy and freedom of speech. Voicing your views is one thing, but one should be more accountable and responsible for each message the person wants to convey. In that sense, that person can voice a thought-out message that is more beneficial to the society and not publish an article oozing with personal bias, emotions and inexcusable ignorance.

Well, di naman matatago na kadalasan - rude talaga ang mga doctors at nurses sa public hospitals. Minsan borderline walang pakielam na talaga sa pasyente (matanda o sanggol man ito). Alam namin na pagod at overworked kayo pero mas lalong magkakasakit ang mga pasyente sa pagtrato ng mga "underpaid"at "overworked" na mga doctor at nurses dito. May mga sasagot jan na edi sa private magpagamot pero hindi rason ang "public" sa pagiging walang pakielam sa pasyente.
ReplyDeleteSa writer naman - kung ang pinagtuunan mo ng pansin sa pagsusulat eh ang "rudeness"at pagiging walang pakielam ng mga nurses at doctors edi walang problema. Di ko alam kung dala lang ba ng galit yang article mo na pati english eh naging batayan mo na sa pagiging doctor. Mejo misplaced.
Maging lesson nalang sa atin lahat ito. Respect begets respect. Doctor, nurse o pasyente.

Teh wala ka dun kaya hindi ka sigurado kung talaga bang may disrespectful attitude nga na nangyari. Ang masasabi ko lang ang Emergency Rooms ay palaging busy kaya pagbigyan mo na ang mga staff kung wala silang oras na maglabas ng red carpet sa pag dating mo. Kung iritado man sila isipin mo na lang na baka nasa end of 24 hour shift sila at ubos na talaga ang energy para mag bow sa iyo. Magpunta ka man ng private o hindi ang priority ng mga ER staff ay magsalba ng buhay kaya nga sini sort out nila ang totoong emergency sa non emergency cases. DeleteAng nakakainis lang sa iba marunong lang mag English feeling entitled na. At yun talaga ang basehan kung magaling yung doctor? Teh manood ka muna ng House MD or Grey's Anatomy para alam mo pagkakaiba ng interns, resident, at fellow doctors bago ka kumuda ng wala ka namang alam.

ReplyDeleteI think nag exaggerate na siya sa kwento niya. If it were a prestigious hospital, I'm sure may scrub suit ang nurses or at least man lang uniform. Same goes sa docs, usually white coat. Imposible lang na naka casual sila kasi kahit simpleng hospital may standard sa clothing ng employees nila. I think feeling privileged lang itong si Sicam kasi di lang agad napansin. Baka ineexpect niya na people should serve her hand and foot, magkandarapa na ibigay ang gusto. Kailangan din mag triage ang nurses, so if busy yung ER at the time, priority yung may kailangan ng immedite medical attention kaya siguro nadelay ang pagasikaso sa kanila. Blame mo din ang healthcare system ng pinas, kasi kaya understaffed ang mga hospital kasi wala man lang magandang benefits sa health care professionals, private man o public.

Sorry, but mayaman lang talaga mostly ang doctors kasi mayaman na talaga families namin to begin with. Only a chosen few gets to be rich dahil sa practice. It's true di kami magugutom but hello, sa ilang milyon kaya na gunastos ng magulang namin sa education namin, kamusta naman ang liit at bagal ng return of investment.

ReplyDeleteWell Fely Sicam is just stating what she experienced. Its actually true. If you go to ERs, even at high end hospitals, most of the resident doctors are barely new in the practice and they don't even know what they are doing or how to treat a patient. I experienced it myself. I went to the ER but had to be interviewed by three resident doctors who asked the same thing before an experienced doctor came and see me. Only after he visited me that they were able to administer the necessary medicine. Imagine, it took an hour before that doctor came. Before the experienced doctor arrived, I asked the resident doctors what medicine is needed. And all they say "baka" etong medicine na to ang ipapainom sa iyo. They are not even sure. So I dont blame Fely for her article.

Deleteteka teka, hehe. may batayan naman kasi yan eh kung bakit minsan or madalas rude ang doctor or nurses sa ilang pasyente. unang una, may mga pasyente na kahit tagalugin mo pa ay din marunong umintindi. for example, san ka nakakita na pasyente papa-check up lang ay gusto deretso agad sa emergency room (dapat sa out patient), samantalang ang pasyente ko na sanggol ay iyak ng iyak, mataas ang lagnat at hirap huminga inaasikaso ko. tapos ung out-patient biglang sisingit para pakuha lang ng blood pressure and ng di mapagbigyan pinakiusapan na mag-antay saglit dahil may priority ay magsasalita ba naman ng malakas na mamamatay na siya dahil di pinapansin? as usual, lahat kami mga nurses & doctors ay biglang mapapatingin sa kanya. samantalang ang lakas pa niya, nakatayo, nagsasalita na galit na galit... ikaw kaya maging nurse or doctor, ano gagawin mo?
DeleteTo answer your query, there are 2 kinds of resident doctors, and the one who saw you was more probably a resident from a private training hospital, as a rule, if you are capable of paying a consultant, (that is with a specialization, or already finished residency training) you (the patient) is directly under the consultant, and the resident is only there to facilitate your admission, but the only one who decides is the consultant.
DeleteWe (the resident) are not paid by you (the patient, you are paying the consultant.. So that is why you waited for the consultant.. Kasi di ba para makilala mo kung sino yung binabayaran mo. Hindi pwede ang resident ang mag manage sa iyo, kasi it is a rule sa private hospital na dapat ang consultant ang mag manage sa iyo (esp if you are not paying by hmo)
you know my family had a bad experience with resident doctors in one of the so called best hospital in our place. my cousin died because the resident doctor at the ER didn't know how to put a tube on his airway... my cousin who is vacationing here in the philippines is a nurse in the us together with his wife are the one who are holding the ambu bag... when we asked the resident doctor questions all she has to say is " i dont know".... is that an example of a good resident doctor? my cousin end up brain dead, he should've been alive today if not for that resident doctor who never showed urgency.... so people have the right to ask if resident doctors are really doctors.... this is my opinion base on my experience so lets respect the writer and other people...

DeleteHindi nga maganda yung pagkaka present ng article. Pero marami na rin akong bad experiences sa doctors at nurses sa pilipinas. First hand experience ko talaga na masungit, impolite, arrogant at wakang compassion. Sa U.S. bumabait sila nang todo kasi super laki ng kita nila compared pag nasa Pilipinas, at alam din nilang madedemanda sila agad agad at hindi sila uubra sa mga nandito kapag nagkamali sila o umasta nang hindi maganda. But as God is my witness, ang daming walang modong doctors at nurses dito.

Ang inuuna talaga kung ano ang mas malala ano ba naman sagutin mo nyo na lang na may masakit sa parte ng puso. This lady is arrogant. Power tripper. Kung gusto mo nag iingles pumunta ka sa high end hospital.

Di ko pa nararanasan, pero sa isang malaking public hospital sa Manila, sinasabi nila na maraming ganung doktor dun. Baka dahil overworked and underpaid sila.

DeleteThe patient was transported to the emergency department via an ambulance. SOP dyan, hindi pa dumadating yung patient sa hospital, may nakaabang ng medical staff. Sabi ng columnist, naghintay pa ng 1 hour bago dumating yung nurse na kumuha muna ng history. And then another hour bago dumating yung resident doctor inspite of the fact na "acute heart pain" yung complaint ng patient. Kung ako yung columnist, magwawala na ako dahil dapat, agad agad may tumitingin na sa pasyente. Sino naman ang hindi magrereklamo kung 2 hours bago may mag-attend na doctor sa potentially life threatening condition? Instead na yung comment nya about hindi makapag-english ang pinansin ng readers, mas importante yung buhay ng pasyente
