Stolen Items Found in Airline Baggage Handlers' Lockers

Items believed to have been stolen from passengers' bags were discovered in the lockers of six baggage handlers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

Photos released by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) show the stolen items, which include pieces of jewelry, wristwatches, blankets, and several padlocks.

The MIAA said these items were discovered by intelligence agents upon checking the lockers of six baggage handlers.

MIAA general manager Jose Honrado expressed alarm over the incidents of theft happening inside the airport.

"Alarming talaga," Honrado said.

The six baggage handlers have been suspended while investigation is ongoing.

According to Honrado, these station loaders are not MIAA nor NAIA personnel. They are outsourced by the airlines, he said.

To address the issue, MIAA officials met with the group of baggage handlers to tackle strategies on how to stop the pilferage activities.

MIAA gave the bag handlers two weeks to come up with a proposal. MIAA is planning to propose a spot inspection of lockers and that the ground handlers wear pants with no pockets.

Honrado, meanwhile, advised passengers to refrain from putting valuables in their check-in baggage.

"Huwag kayo maglagay ng valuable... Sino loko-lokong maglalagay ng P10,000 o ng jewelry? Sa hand carry mo ilagay yan," he said.

  3. Agreed! I think he said $10,000 and not pesos. I think its only here in the Philippines that media keeps pouncing on our airport. It is a fact that our airports need improvement but I think the media makes it a habit to sensentionalize everything abt NAIA and looks the other way for any good news or improvements that happen.

I hope you're not saying it's okay because it happens somewhere else, too.
    Stealing is not okay.

  14. Hay naku, finally, it's out! Thanks FP, i'm a frequent traveler and me and my friends have been victims of stealing at Ninoy aquino airport. Yung mga dezipper na checked in luggage, kayang kaya nila buksan w/o damaging the bags itself. Pag nag complain ka, sinasabi ng airline staff, rampant na yan pero wala daw yan sa NAIA pero they dont have proof daw kase.
Btw, they can detect if u have something valuable in your luggage cuz me xray ata ,so they know which bags to open and steal from before they load the bags on the conveyors. NAIA officials, you have to do something about this, it's been going on for years. Kahit nga di naman ganun kamahal yung item, they still take it kase since nabuksan na na nila bag mo, kinukuha na nila kung ano puede. Wala ba cctv duon.

  15. Sa Ninoy Aquino airport, me mga bukas gang ng check in luggage whether you're arriving or leaving, dami ko na kilalang nabiktima nyan.

  19. That's why you dont put valuables in your check in baggage.
