sa akin imitation ito. ibahin mo ang chair, gawin mong bench. tapos sa halip na conventional stick legs, gawin na inverted pyramid. then copy paste the elements of surrounding water and plants. ano bago sa design nila bukod sa leg form? wala. therefore, imitation.
Good thing you brought this up. This is a good example of imitation vs inspiration. Ang mga gawa ng Apartment8, obvious na IMITATION. Kopyang kopya, nothing new to offer to the public and most importantly, it CLAIMS na sila ang original (just like fake LV bags out there). It is geared to confuse people into believing na sila ang orig. Whereas sa issue ng team ni Maggie, it's INSPIRATION dahil they did not blatantly copy the entire setup. They offered something new (and creative) dahil they conceptualized that table by incorporating Angkor Wat features dun sa legs since they were given the theme "Cambodia". Ok they may have seen that design sa Pinterest (who knows) but the important thing is they did not copy dahil "wala lang". They can justify their design and prove that it's within the concept. Even the water feature is still within the concept. Now if you can find a table COMPLETELY similar to that, that's when you can start to question who copied who. This is just about justifying the design but regarding winning the competition, ibang story na yan.
Where do you actually draw the line between inspiration vs imitation? Although elements of the design is still within concept, it is for a fact been done as shown in the pictures above. Also it is not creativity when a designer copies the whole structure of the table then just decides to change the leg form. Plus, whether or not they copied within their design's concept or "dahil wala lang", it is still copying. This design is a copy since most design elements in the picture pegs can be found in their design (the surrounding water, the plants, etc.)
for a contest, dapat original pati ang concept nila maggie. so for that, hindi nga dapat sila nanalo, dahil obviously, may pinagkopyahan ang group nila maggie. and besides, hindi din maganda ang pagkakagawa ng waterfalls chorva nila, hindi man lang smooth ang flow ng tubig.
Specially to have 90% of one's contest entry similar to the supplied photos above....The only difference is the table bottom having inverted pyramids and the cracked wall with the gold pyramid in the middle.
Thanks to Consunji ;) she has all the connections so whether we like it or not, compared to others who are more creative and talented she will make it big...but I feel pity because without Consunji will she make it big? Will she be able to have such a lavish lifestyle continuously? But at least she's trying to improve herself by studying;)
It's not a copy. More of inspiration. Yes, she may have gotten the idea of putting waterfalls at the end of the table but the overall design of their booth really interpreted their Cambodian theme. I don't know why there's an issue here. The tables and overall set up from pinterest is very different.
huh? Sinabi bang ginawa nila yung booth nila for a hotel.
Time to be creative. The theme is Cambodia in general so it means you can get inspiration from anything Cambodian not just their houses. Also, it's called inspiration, meaning, if you were given a job to design a house inspired by a certain country, you don't do it by designing the area as if it's an actual house there. If I choose to be inspired by the smallest thing that reminds me of Cambodia, so be it. Think deeper.
You take inspiration from the biggest down to the smallest things that may be connected to Cambodia. Mema ka eh..Mema i-comment lang.
Well said anon 11:28! Yung iba dito nagmamarunong. The idea was to incorporate certain elements from Cambodian culture to the designs, meaning anything Cambodian( temples, forests, etc) hindi yung kung ano design mismo ng mga bahay. If they wanted the designs to be exactly like Cambodia's houses eh di talo na sila dahil simple lang most houses dun and hello, san dun yung creativity? Pls yung iba before ranting and bashing know the rules first. Also, if you see UP'sc design it wasn't unique either, specially the furniture & wall ornaments. And no, I am not Maggie or anyone from Sofa. I'm an interior designer and my friends joined the the competition from 2 years ago.
Off-topic but my friends and I, before transferring to Raffles, went to SoFA because we were told they were the best. The first few months were chill but guess what lol, they started ripping our parents off on the fifth month so we left
Ang pag kaka alam ko kasi pag sinabing competition lalo na sa design you have to come up with something fresh and new.. out of the box.. hindi un kokopya ka sa idea ng iba.. buking na ngabna kinopya idedepensa pa na hindi.. ang tawag dyan Tamad na interior design.. kopya lang ng kopya.. dagdag bawas.. edit lang then kanya ma un design. Hahaha
sige anonymous maghanap ka ng ka-peg na pic ng up ha na mismong copy paste na pinaltan lang katiting na detail gaya ng table legs na ginawa nila for this cambodia theme :))
Inspiration lang. Di naman sya super gaya, I mean it has the same concept but different structure. Halos lahat naman ng designs inspired from something. The judges and all interior designers know that. Yung sa UP booth din naman the wall ornament and chairs di unique sa kanila and has been around for quite some time na.
I agree with you. Unless part of the rule is to come up with an original concept, I think it was ok for them to do this. Ang OA lang for me na gawing issue to.
Alam mo kung bakit may mga certain furnitures and fixtures na pare-parehas ( like the mirror used in UP's booth was also used in some other booth) kasi may isang supplier ang mga booth which is wilcon. Maging observant ka naman. Most probably magkakaparehas sila ng gagamitin. But if you look how it was designed, mahahalata mo na copied siya. Look at how elements were arranged. The photo above and the work of this maggie looks the same.
Ay wehhhhhh? Kung ganun, ang galing ng other booths since na utilize nila ng maigi yung supplied items, unlike this water design na copy paste ang peg.
If there is already a trend for this type of design (i.e., table with waterfall feature), then I think it would be inappropriate to present an on-going trend in a design competition.
These competitions are platforms to see how creative the minds of the participants are, to inspire new concepts and designs, NOT to present designs that are already trending in the market place. The participants are supposed to be able to present new ideas to the audience and inspire the next wave of designs. This is why people are having a big problem with this whole issue. It's not about the furniture placement or difference in materials used, it's the design concept and idea NOT being fresh and innovative, which are essentially, the principles behind a design competition, in the first place. Are we to believe that the judges were impressed with the design and thought it to be a forward-thinking presentation?
So, yeah, emotions aside, even I wonder what it was they saw, what separated Maggie Wilson's design from the rest of the pack, and what criteria did they use to judge it as the winning design overall.
O sige ha. Following your logic, lahat ng sumasali sa design competition all over the world of let's say, furniture, na nag submit ng square or rectangle na table gawan nyo rin ng issue ha!
"The participants are supposed to be able to present new ideas to the audience and inspire the next wave of designs. This is why people are having a big problem with this whole issue. It's not about the furniture placement or difference in materials used, it's the design concept and idea NOT being fresh and innovative, which are essentially, the principles behind a design competition, in the first place." Seriously? As if naman yung entry ng UP is earth-shatteringly original. Before you accuse the other team of getting their ideas off Pinterest, siguraduhin no na hindi in kayo kumuha ng idea dun. Sorry to say, but your entry, aside from it having way too much going on, is actually very generic. No wow factor.
cause others booth were too cliche and simple. Even up's, i was kinda disappointed. I expected more. Kudos to the organizers of world bex. I had legit fun. As an architecture student of UPD all i can say is that nothing wrong with that. And to the UP people, hey remember our school's mantra please, honor before excellence. Why rant on social media, can't decipher why would you resort into this kind of ploy, because you can't accept the fact that you didn't won and your ego id just too big.
"O sige ha. Following your logic, lahat ng sumasali sa design competition all over the world of let's say, furniture, na nag submit ng square or rectangle na table gawan nyo rin ng issue ha!"
That doesn't make any sense. Tables with straight edges have become a standard because they are practical for users. And okay lang naman sana if they used this floating dining table idea, just don't claim it as their own kasi competition yan eh. Sana nilagay na may reference sila for that design. Kasi to me, it looks like everything was blatantly copied at tinailor-fit lang to the Cambodian theme by adding Angkor Wat elements.
And maganda naman sya talaga, pero if "wow factor" lang naman hinahanap mo, edi wag ka nang maging designer. Better to present a "cliche and simple" design than one that's not only impractical, but also hazardous.
I don't think this anon 7:41 is from UP. Dude honor goes with excellence. If you're a real design student, you should see how the booth brought us all back to philippine colonial period. -from a legit UP ARKI student

Edi mag lalamutak yan. I cant see any thing na ginaya nya aside siguro sa color ng ng upuan ayun lang. Pansin ko lang in those 3 photos, they have the same color ng upuan, baka naman yan tlaga yung perfect na color to match the table. (P.S. hindi ako si maggie mwah!)
I think the idea of the water thingie flowing under the glass of the table cannot be patented for one person to use lang. It's a technology na when done right (like maggie's team did) super bonggels ang effect niya unlike the image from pinterest. It's just like saying di ka original if indirect din ang lighting mo, it's a techinique, it can't be owned by one person.
Ang bitter ng UP!!! I saw their booth.
Bakit UP lang? Meron naman nagcocomment dun na hindi UP. And it's so sad how people dismiss criticism as "hating" and "bashing," when really it is supposed to help everyone learn
Sorry to say pero wala naman kasing ooomph factor ung gawa nung UP. I think there are a number of reasons why hindi sila nanalo talaga.
Bakit ba kasi ambilis to judge na pag may nagcocomment sa design nila ay UP? Why single them out sa napakadaming public posts about sa design ng sofa? Hanapin nyo yung post ko. Char! XD
There's a difference between inspiration and imitation. And aside from the obvious copying, the other issue is that the design isn't fit to actually serve as a functional, everyday dining area. As an interior DESIGN (and not decor)competition, the criteria should have fit not just the aesthetics, but also the practicality and usefulness of the area.
Anyway, I'm from UP, but even I think Indonesia (PUP) should have won. SoFA looks nice, but looks so uncomfortable and uneasy to eat in.
You guys don't know anything about interior design and applying design concept in an actual space, so you don't have the right to say such things to both sides. Have a degree in ID or at least take a year of it before you judge people's design strategies. And the one who's claiming he/she's from UPD arki, i doubt you are being real. WTH is "didn't won".
This is not a very practical design for a house or even a restaurant inside the house... It is very dangerous especially for the children, disabled and old people... Interior design isn't just about the design ... It's also about the functionality... I think is is really a bad design...
i agree... form and function should go hand in hand when designing a space for living. yung design ng team ni tita maggi, puro form lang, mahina sa function.
Medyo hindi busy si maggie ah! To think ange didn't tag anyone. Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate.
nakita nyo ba un mga photos? habang un mga id students from other universities eh hirap na hirap mag set up ng module nila ang mga taga SOFA ayun nanunuod lang sa isang tabi at pinapanuod un mga contractors from DMCI wearing CONSUNJI uniforms to set-up un module nila.. hahahahaha
Hoy mga Iska, wala sa contractor yun. Wala sa rules yun. Organizers ang sisihin mo hindi ung contractors. Pero SoFA, wait lang ah. Nakakamatay naman ata yang dining area niyo. Ha? Bakit nga pala kayo ang nanalo. PSID pa rin the best.
Actually the legs of the table is really excellent! Even the triangular thing on the wall inspired by Angkor Wat. Plus you can also tell na Cambodia ang theme ng space. It's like a song na nakaka-LSS, maalala mo siya kaagad. Masasabi mo na, "Ah! Sa SoFA toh!" Unlike the other booths na halos same lang. No offense. Pero yeah, nag-stand out nga talaga ung sa SoFA. I really liked it, liked ha. Past tense. Pero when I saw the photos that look so much like the the one SoFA did. Na-turn off ako. Plus the area is just dangerous. And since madaling mabasa ang floor, eh di madudulas kaagad ang user nito, eh di tigok si user. Pano ba yan? I wouldn't risk my life having this kind of space. It would be dangerous to my guests, family, etc. And if you really want to be a good designer, think of the users of the space. Their SAFETY. Crucial ang safety namin. Kaya other schools were wondering why they won? Is it because of the design concept lang? But how about the space planning? Sana man lang they showed the scores of other schools, and gusto rin malaman ng ibang schools kung bakit kayo ang nanalo. You just explained them kasi your concept and your inspiration, na well-traveled and all ang students (which is actually good kasi mas lalo ka nga talagang ma-iinspire). If so, expound please. Plus UP, walang personalan. Explain it to them ng matino.

HA? ("sikat" lol. di ko nga sya kilala bago yung issueng to.)
floor plans? detail drawings? marunong ba sila nun? hahaha pag drawingin mo yan ng detail drawing and section at cosntruction drawings tignan ko lang kung kaya nila.. hahahah baka tawagin yun mga taga consunji to draw it for them! kaya tama lang yun sinabi ng taga UP sa board exam walang pinterest search.. unless bayaran mo un prc para mag ka license ka as Interior Designer!
Nowadays its really hard to determine which is original and copy cut... What in the world is going on.. No originally

ReplyDeleteThe judges are stupid..

Why rant on social media, can't decipher why would you resort into this kind of ploy, because you can't accept the fact that you didn't won and your ego id just too big.
Delete"O sige ha. Following your logic, lahat ng sumasali sa design competition all over the world of let's say, furniture, na nag submit ng square or rectangle na table gawan nyo rin ng issue ha!"
DeleteThat doesn't make any sense.
7.41, pls study your grammar lessons. - from a concerned UP student
Deletehonor and excellence po koya
Delete
DeleteI don't think this anon 7:41 is from UP. Dude honor goes with excellence. If you're a real design student, you should see how the booth brought us all back to philippine colonial period. -from a legit UP ARKI student

Nothing wrong with having an inspiration.
ReplyDeletepaano naging inspiration e kopyang kopya yung waterfalls??? e sana kung nag offer sila ng bagong concept na inintegrate yung waterfalls din, e hindi e, direktang nilang kinopya yung waterfalls under the table
DeleteHomaygash?! Plagiarism ba itey?!...yun na! Paaak!
Edi mag lalamutak yan. I cant see any thing na ginaya nya aside siguro sa color ng ng upuan ayun lang. Pansin ko lang in those 3 photos, they have the same color ng upuan, baka naman yan tlaga yung perfect na color to match the table.
DeleteHmm pinteresting!!! Maisearch nga si maggie baka may pinterest sya.
ReplyDeleteI think the idea of the water thingie flowing under the glass of the table cannot be patented for one person to use lang. It's a technology na when done right (like maggie's team did) super bonggels ang effect niya unlike the image from pinterest. It's just like saying di ka original if indirect din ang lighting mo, it's a techinique, it can't be owned by one person.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what you mean by "done right?" Sobrang impractical nga nung design eh.
DeleteIt's not even done right. I went to the exhibit and saw their tiles blanched with water. :( Smooth tiles for this water application? A big NO-NO.
DeleteUP! MOVE ON!!!
ReplyDeleteAng bitter ng UP!!! I saw their booth.
ReplyDeleteBakit UP lang? Meron naman nagcocomment dun na hindi UP. And it's so sad how people dismiss criticism as "hating" and "bashing," when really it is supposed to help everyone learn
DeleteHindi naman claim na UP na dapat sila manalo ang usapin bakit ginaya lang Nila yung design sa iba at competition Ito dapat fresh idea at pano mo masasabi na Ikaw ang nag design yan Kung alam Mong my pinagayahan
DeleteSorry to say pero wala naman kasing ooomph factor ung gawa nung UP. I think there are a number of reasons why hindi sila nanalo talaga.
ReplyDeleteBakit ba kasi ambilis to judge na pag may nagcocomment sa design nila ay UP? Why single them out sa napakadaming public posts about sa design ng sofa? Hanapin nyo yung post ko. Char! XD
Delete(estudante mula sa silangan)
And there are also a number of reasons why hindi dapat nag-win ang design ng Sofa. (R. Escarez, PWU)
Deletejusko halata si ate girl kaya pala defensive ahihhihi
ReplyDeleteThere's a difference between inspiration and imitation. And aside from the obvious copying, the other issue is that the design isn't fit to actually serve as a functional, everyday dining area. As an interior DESIGN (and not decor)competition, the criteria should have fit not just the aesthetics, but also the practicality and usefulness of the area.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm from UP, but even I think Indonesia (PUP) should have won.
ReplyDeleteeh di ikaw na may bachelors degree sa interior Design! hahahaha
DeleteI don't have a bachelors degree, but I've been in the program for three years in a design school.
ReplyDeleteThat's true. OA ng mga tao :))) tsaka may punto naman yung mga taga UP and other commentors...
DeleteThis is not a very practical design for a house or even a restaurant inside the house... It is very dangerous especially for the children, disabled and old people... Interior design isn't just about the design ... It's also about the functionality... I think is is really a bad design...
ReplyDeletei agree... form and function should go hand in hand when designing a space for living. yung design ng team ni tita maggi, puro form lang, mahina sa function.
DeleteThey don't deserve winning the title ... All designs must be original when you are joining a contest lol
ReplyDeleteHaha I agree
To think ange didn't tag anyone. Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate.
ReplyDeleteInterior Design is inspired by nature.
ReplyDeleteAMEN
DeleteNa Obra sagaya ata nag group nila
ReplyDeletekorek! hahaaha
Ha? Bakit nga pala kayo ang nanalo. PSID pa rin the best.
DeleteMaggie tulog na! Hahahahhaa
ReplyDeletePar Hindi gayang Gaya di apoy nalang dapat ginamit Hindi tubig malamang no issue
DeleteActually the legs of the table is really excellent!
ReplyDeleteAnyhow...

I sooo love your commnt and your quote! :)
Delete(Mr. sevilla, PUP)
Clearly it's a copy paste design!
ReplyDeleteAmen
concept: eeeeengk. kahit concept nyo beh, waley. sobrang literal. to be honest, compared sa ibang booth na sobrang thematic, medyo okay yung sa inyo. pero ang literal pa rin. inspiration: angkor wat. ohhhh why dont we use the shape of the angkor wat as the base of the table? para naman di nila masabing kinopya natin yung design na cantilevered table. great idea!! so much innovation. and ohh since napapalibutan ng water and plants yung angkor wat, lets include water and plants in our "design"
("sikat" lol. di ko nga sya kilala bago yung issueng to.)
floor plans? detail drawings? marunong ba sila nun? hahaha pag drawingin mo yan ng detail drawing and section at cosntruction drawings tignan ko lang kung kaya nila.. hahahah baka tawagin yun mga taga consunji to draw it for them! kaya tama lang yun sinabi ng taga UP sa board exam walang pinterest search.. unless bayaran mo un prc para mag ka license ka as Interior Designer!
DeleteThat's true.
