    1. I feel the same way. Not because people normally stay long in Starbucks means it's right. You stay a decent amount of time so other customers can also sit down. Or buy another cup of coffee and earn your right to the seat.

    1. @2:22AM: Well, it only shows na hindi ka nag Starbucks masyado. It is a study place particularly for medicine and law students. There's nothing wrong with it.

    2. Guilty. There's an ambiance in SB that makes it conducive for studying. Nakakailang cases ako dyan.

    4. Honey in this digital age coffee houses are not only for tete -a-tete. They can also be a coffice and by the way even the homeless can stay there as long as they buy any of their products. Go to your nearest SB , coffeebean , peet's, , alchemy, king's coffee, bean scene et al..

    10. @2:50 starbucks just like u said is a place to unwind it is definitely NOT a place to study the only reason why it became that way is because of its Free wifi..as u said theres othing wrong with it but its aPUBLIC place its for EVERYBODY.this is more of personal responsibility and respect for other people not because it became a study place doesnt mean student have the right to do or stay as long as they want! Like i say its a public place

      Delete
    11. for real? anon 2:50..medicine and law students talaga...as far as I know medicine and law students want to study in place quieter than starbucks....you can see real students studying inside a freaking library not starbucks...get real ! masabi lang kasing nasa starbucks may halong selfie pa sikat na...suskopo..order your coffee, have a quick conversation or what not...read a a few pages of your fave novel then leave...don't hog the damn place like you own it for a small frapp....you know you know this all too well..

    12. Study place bcoz of its free wi-fi. Lol!

      Delete
    13. Well, actually its not. Merong tinatawag na LIBRARY or study halls. Back in the good ol' days, di uso ang coffee shops. We do study groups sa mga school rooms or arrange for meet ups sa mga bahay-bahay ng kaklase. Libre coffee and meryenda pa un. Here in Singapore, nagpopost ng reminder ang starbucks na appreciate nila kung pedeng di gawing study hall ung establishment nila specially during peak hours or kung maraming customers(kung pde lang sana magpost ng pic dito, i could snap a photo of such advise). But we digress in reference dun sa above post, they are there for a catch up with a friend, which is on the fence ako kse pag nagchikahan talaga mejo nakakalimot talaga ng time. However, common courtesy din na pag tapos na kumain, sana e igive-up na ung seat for the other customers. There are other places din to do the kwentuhan na di ka maiistorbo and d ka makakaistorbo. Side note: magaling sya magsulat ha, blogger maybe? For a student, me future sya sa writing :)

Oh and btw, i'm not a middle aged person as referred to by the post LOL

      Delete
    18. Ginagawang study space ang starbucks cos they're open til midnight and some are even 24hrs while libraries are open til 9pm lang. And sa Starbucks may coffee and food while most libraries prohibit bringing food and drinks inside. Common courtesy lang naman na kung wala nang upuan, maghintay patiently na may mabakante or move to another coffee shop. Even the baristas of coffee shops are taught na wag magpaalis ng customer cos bastos yun.

    19. Starbucks is not a study place nor it is a library.. I agree on that.. But i am honestly one of the guilty students who studies at starbucks.. Not because of selfies or feeling pacool.. But it is a comfortable place FOR ME to study there.. Kanya kanya tayo ng diskarte sa pagaral.. If you're comfortable at home or at a quiet place then i/we respect that.. But Please respect our way of studying too.. And to be honest.. I've been studying at Starbucks for more than 7 years.. From my bachelor's degree to my master's and now to my law school.. And excuse my rudeness but we are the regular customers.. We are the ones who contributes to starbucks.. Because we go there everyday and we order not only once per day.. We also eat there and enjoys their food.. So yeah.. Even if may bagyo.. Nandun po kame.. Bumibili.. Nagdadala ng mas maraming customers as we invite our friends.. If you have a problem with starbucks being a study place.. Report it to the officials.. Tell them to tell us not to study there.. Thats gonna be half a million loss from my group only per year.. Yes that's small.compared to what they earn but still half a million is still half a million..

  6. RESPECT AT CONSIDERATION FOR OTHERS ...... Di ba tinuro yan ng magulang mo. Pag nakita mo madami na tao at halos wala na maupuan then it's time for you to leave. They worry more kung walang tumatambay sa coffee shops nila.

Coffee shops around the world are made for coffee drinkers and those who want to destress hindi para mag-catch up. Catching up will take hours. There are parks or restos where you can stay for hours if you prefer to catch up with your friends. Wag masyadong pasosyal, hija. And FYI, kapag busy ang coffee shops, dapat 30 mins ka lang mag-stay to give consideration to others.

    7. My dear ateng in this digital nomad culture it is acceptable for these kids to stay in the coffee shop as long as they buy the products and they don't stay beyond closing hours. A full coffeeshop is better than an empty one. Obviously those matured ladies are so ignorant of this culture that's why they were being obnoxious. I work in the financial district in SF honey were coffee shops abound. These places are packed with students , professionals and entrepreneurs alike. Those ladies need to go somewhere else that can accommodate their group or in an intimate place where they can have their conference . The only time the act becomes egregious is when their butts have occupied the chair for more than 2 hours and they have not bought something. Those ladies need to learn the word coffice ... Haha ha!

    8. Ignorante sa SB to c anon 2:26. Kaloka.

      Delete
    9. Wow respect and consideration! What about those matured ladies??? They also need to educate themselves about coffeeshop etiquette. From what I understood from this student's rant they were totally obnoxious. My friend even the homeless can sit on that chair the whole day as long as he buys the shops products. Merry Xmas and May the new year give you more insight and knowledge ...

We would just look for another shop. Where old friends catch up, business folks chat up with their colleagues or even meetup with clients, students studying...kahit sa USA po, ganyan din. Pero since first time mo mag Starbucks, I guess you wouldn't know :P So sige, try mo istorbohin ang isang group of businessmen sa tactics nyong yan. Good luck sa inyo #FirstTimeMagStarbucks

    24. Kung madalas sila magStarbucks, dapat alam nila na madaming customers ang nagsstay talaga for a long period of time regardless kung they're done na with their food and drinks. You're lucky if may mga tao na willing to leave kahit di pa sila tapos para lang makaupo ka.

6 kami sa barkada and if gusto lang namin ng coffee, laging to-go kami. But if may agenda talaga kami (school stuff), nagsstay talaga kami kahit alam namin na limited nalang ang seats for other customers but once we're done, alis narin agad.

    25. Anon 11:48 dami mong problema sa buhay. Simpleng bagay hindi mo magets. Fishball nga tinatambayan kahit nakatayo at mainit. Simpleng psychology lang kaya couch ang halus upuan sa mga coffee shop (hindi lahat) because they want their customer to stay comfortably as long as they want.

      Delete
    26. ako hindi ako palaging tumatambay sa mga coffee shops pero alam ko ang kalakaran sa mga ganyan..its basic GMRC actually na dapat wag maging bastos at wag mangharass. the middle-aged woman should know that at her age..I'm sure may mga anak at apo na sila so I'm wondering what kind of manners she teaches her children and grandchildren

      Delete
    27. 2:26 Madame, sa starbucks pwede pong magtagal at magchikahan for hours kahit ubos na yung kape nyo. that's what it's established for. first time nyo po? you should have asked for assistance sa staff, or better yet, naghanap nalang kayo ng ibang coffee shop na kasya kayong 15. respect begets respect.

  7. Hmmmm, obviously the oldies are not familiar with the coffee shop culture. Most likely when they relate their experience to their kids and kin, who, I suppose are more familiar with the "norm" in coffee shops they will all say, "Ooooh, ganun pala."

    1. You do not know what you are talking about. I frequently travel to canada and the US. While it is true that people study and just hang out in coffee shops, people in Canada and in the USA do not do this during peak hours. That's called basic courtesy, which is apparently a very alien notion to a lot of Filipinos.

      Delete
    2. Anon 2:45 AM depende yan kung saan ka na lugar kasi dito sa amin kahit starbucks or other coffee shops palaging puno. there was a time na dalawang oras akong tumambay ng starbucks kasi may hinihintay ako, meron ding mas nauna pa sa akin at nandun pa rin kahit nung umalis ako. hindi naman kasi parehas ng mga restaurant ang turnover ng mga coffee shop kaya kung walang makitang upuan either maghintay or maghanap na lang ng ibang coffee shop.

      Delete
    3. As someone born and raised in the United States, and goes to cafes frequently, I can say with complete confidence that it is YOU who does not know what you are talking about. If you want to talk about lack of manners, along with a bullying "holier-than- thou "
attitude, these women are perfect example

      Delete
    4. Totally agree with you.
It's ok to stay in a coffeeshop for more than an hour if there are no other people waiting to be seated. Yes, it is a study place, but this is still a coffe shop. Let's be considerate since there are other paying customers.
However, the manner they were treated by the mid aged women is something to be despised about too.

      Delete
    5. I agree with you 2:45! Dito lang naging practice yan. May tamang oras na gawing tambayan ang isang lugar regardless kung coffee shop or not. Rude ung ginawa nung thunders pero di rn tama na isipin nung mga bata na tambay time yon kc the place was jam packed.

    7. I live in Canada....and Anon 2:29AM is right. Doesn't matter which ethnicity, or whether its peak hours, people hang out for a long time in coffee shops. Lol

    8. I agree. Nagpunta kami sa US several times for business. Puro kami pinoy at nung unang beses kami pumunta sa Starbucks, puro vacant ang seats. Mahaba yung pila pero lahat ng tao nagmamadali and gusto nila"to go" yung order na coffee and doughnut.

    11. NOT! 2:45 OA ka. That's what I do and I'm not the only one who does that.

      Delete
    12. Ditto! While it is very common for us filipinos to sit and stay longer in coffee shops, we should also consider the other customers who need seats. These middle-aged women may have crossed the border in pressuring u guys to leave, but i think u should also know when to take the initiative to leave and give others the chance to at least finish their beverage while seated!

    14. Anon 2:45, dear, of course I know what I am talking about. I am from Canada and when we first moved here we wanted to open a coffee shop and so we researched the culture of coffee shop. Peak hours? Some job interviewers conduct their interviews at coffee shops, and yes, during peak hours. Trust me, I know what I am talking/writing about. Anon 2:29

    15. On-the-go naman kasi mga tao sa US kaya di sila masyado nagsstay lalo na talaga pag peak hours. Kaya nga 'peak' e. Mas maraming tao so ang tendency talaga is to buy your drink then go.

    16. tigilan nyo na ang pagdedefend sa mga coffee shop squatters. ang pinsan ko po ay manager sa isang branch ng starbucks sa makati at matagal na nilang problema yang mga tambay ng tambay lang. aabutin ng limang oras isang kape lang binibili, even when there are a lot of people looking for seats. just because they allow it, di naman ibig sabihin pwede nang abusuhin. tama yung nag post sa taas, karamihan kasi ng mga Pilipino walang BASIC COURTESY

      Delete
    17. my dear the "coffee shop culture" that you are pertaining to varies. Most hole in the wall coffee shops, or those branches of Starbucks near parks, villages or schools, it's true they welcome these people who just hang out. lalo na those branches na nag-attract na ng art crowd. But in high traffic areas like business districts or inside malls, mali naman yung ginagawang tambayan ang mga yan, lalong lalo na kung peak hours!

In this case i agree mali yung mga matatanda. they could have asked nicely, at isa pa hindi pa nga nila nauubos yung binili nila minamadali na sila. Pero huwag naman natin igeneralize. marami talaga ang umaabuso sa patakaran ng Starbucks, feeling nila pwede na sila tumambay buong araw. just because hindi sila pinapaalis tingin nila okay lang. You know what you are talking about? sige magbukas ka ng coffee shop, tingnan ko lang kung matuwa ka kung ang mga customers mo isang drink lang ang bibilhin then mag stay for 5 hours or more, then makikita mo may potential customers ka na maghahanap na lang ng ibang coffee shop dahil wala nang maupuan.

  10. Honestly, as per SB, what youre paying in their coffee shop is the experience. Ambience, brand, experience and not so much of the coffee. Also based on the interior design of a coffee shop, it is designed to be comfty, meaning medyo tambayan talaga. So for me rude yung mga middle-aged women...this is not fastfood chain where everything is designed so you can eat-and-go kasi even the choices of chairs in a fastfood eh medyo comfty lang....enough to sit and eat but not to stay and hang-out. Haayy pag puno dapat wag mamilit magpaalis ng tao. Find another coffee shop nalang

  17. Meron akong napanood one time sa show ni Kris Aquino about time etiquette sa isang coffee shop or how long can you stay there basta ba you are consuming their products/goods, correct me if i am wrong parang 2 hrs yata un, then you have to buy another. Pero regardless, i think it was rude of those older people to impose don sa mga younger ones kahit na ba onti lang or paubos na ung pagkain nila, coffee shops are designed for small/medium sized groups and not for a large group kasi nga the space is limited and hindi sia designed tipong pang restaurant or fast food where you can freely grab and re-arrange chairs so all of you can seat in one big group, pwera nalang if in advance you have contacted that shop that you wanted it like that. Ewan ko minsand kasi feeling ng mga tao, pag napatungtong sila sa isang coffee shop eh yayamanin na sila or they are very "susyal" na but one thing is for sure, manners should always be exercised, mano bang magtanong ung older woman if you guys are about to be finished na so they can wait properly at mano bang ikaw mismo younger girl, you must have said something into na likes ng "Excuse me po, do you need anything from us?" so that could have sparred you from super inis (because kung ako ang nandian i would have been inis too, but wait i did that pala just recently hahaha i asked the rude girl about the same thing and i got the result that i want, she walked away.. lolz)

I, for one, never tried studying in Starbucks kase I'm easily distracted by people (especially cute guys LOL) so I'd rather stay in the farthest corner of our library, listen to the buzz of the electric fan/air-con than try to tune out noise. Anyhoooooo, I think the girl ranting is from the same school as me (judging by that 'Sixwillfix' tag). Ewan ko din ba pero ang burgis din naman nya ng very, very slide (LOL). I would have done the same as yours Anon to try asking what I can do for them kesa makipag-tagisan ka ng ugali sa mga manang. We expect more from the learned to handle this better. That's all.

  25. I completely understand you. Starbucks "culture" is different from the other fastfood places. I stayed at Starbucks for 2 hours while waiting for my car to be fixed, and had a grande mocha, bottled water and a pastry. No big deal. No one pressured me out. Its either you go out and carry your coffees or wait for a free table(s). And to think these women are in their 40s?!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Both groups are rude. Ok lang tumambay if you order again if not then you're getting seats meant for new customers. 2 hours i think is the maximum time unless walang tao then that's ok.

28. the question here is not how long you stay in a coffee shop, wa ako care if you stay there the whole day or night, and yeah, others are correct in saying na tambayan talaga ang coffee shops, in ayala nga kahit yung mga nagnenetworking naka-tambay, pero hindi naman sila pinapaalis, those middle-aged women have no right to ask anyone to leave after an hour or so, kung yung mga barista nga hindi nagpapaalis ng mga tao eh sila pa, I would do the same thing, lalo kong tatagalan ang pagtambay para lang sila mainis...dedma na sila girl!

  32. #culturaldifferences I find your hashtag rather misplaced. I don't think it's in our culture not to show common courtesy. It doesn't matter if you feel entitled to your seats because you know of this unspoken Starbucks rule that people can stay as long as they like so long as there's a cup of coffee on their table. That does not excuse you from basic courtesies-- SB is not your living room. Other customers need to sit down. Give up your seat. You have outstayed your welcome.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Pareho silang mali. Rude yung ladies, no question. Pero I understand yung frustration na I myself also want a cup of coffee, time to enjoy it with the so-called ambience that some commenters mention here tapos puno ang Starbucks ng mostly customers who are way past done with their drinks or food tas naka tambay lang. Yes, I'll leave and find another place. Pero may courtesy din sana yung ibang tao to see that other people would like to sit too. Sa mga nagcocompare sa US/Europe with coffee shop culture na pwde magtagal however you want, it's not true. The difference is when they see people looking for seats at a full coffee shop, more than likely someone already done will get up and offer space. THAT'S courtesy. Maraming sensitive and ma-pride na Filipinos unfortunately.

  48. Here's my 2 cents worth..
Very rude ang dating ni tita. Bully at ill-mannered, not worth stopping to their level. I agree with some of the comments here, respect and consideration for others and kailangan.
As far as students go, i know nasanay na kayong tambayan and SB, pero common sense lang, it is first and foremost a food & drinks venue. You also need to observe basic courtesy and give respect and consideration for others who may want to utilize the place for what it is intended for. Sure, stay for a bit, why not. You also need to be considerate of the proprietors (who, by the way, are also at fault here) that need to make a profit.
At the end of the day, you are all to blame. Kulang lahat sa self-discipline at mga pasaway. I am very familiar with the coffee culture and have been to many places around the world where old AND young people enjoy, take time out but are also considerate of others at marunong makiramdam.

Dapat nga of all people, sila ung nagseset ng good example. Sad lang.

It depends what the situation is you can hang out for as long as you want in a coffee shop but regardless whether its a cafe or resto and the place is packed and as you said theres a long cue of people for coffee i guess its common courtesy to give way to others.
