What US Newspaper Movie Critics Have to Say about Anne Curtis and Blood Ransom

“Ms. Curtis, Filipino-Australian actress making her American film debut, suffers nobly, with full lips and heavy eyelashes, parading in leather and occasionally acquiring fangs, a veiny complexion and flaring red eyes. She is not without charisma, but this is not her proper vehicle. It would be interesting to see her in a role of more down-to-earth dimensions.” - NY Times

“Filipino American writer-director Francis dela Torre does sort of the opposite with "Blood Ransom," creating something passably American but seeming to aim primarily at a Filipino audience. More than anything, the film plays like a vanity project for Filipino entertainer Anne Curtis, making her American movie debut.” - LA Times

“while the portentous glances and oblique dialogue of the undead evoke stylish '70s Euro-vampires — as do the trippy cuts and fade-outs — Oliver's manhunt feels more like a low-budget '80s potboiler. Fewer cops and more full-tilt vampire batshittery might not have resulted in a more coherent movie, necessarily, but almost certainly would've made for a more captivating one” - The Village Voice

    2. ANON 3:05 am, kahit ilang ulit mo ipilit yang hanashi mo, it won't disguise the fact that this was a BAD movie. At walang papuri na nilagay sa acting ni Anne, only ONE review referred to her "charisma" while also pointing out that it looked like a VANITY project. If you have no idea what vanity is and the negative connotation it has, you have no right to be all preachy here.

    3. True Anon 11:16. It doesn't remove the fact that it was a bad movie and her acting didn't help either.

  14. Naalala ko yung movie na "D-war" which was Korean produced pero American ang actors. Nahahalata kasi ng mga Onak kapag trying hard to pass as "American" ang isang film outing, like this one. So any inconsistency or stylistic shortcoming ng movie eh, sad to say, they will attribute to the film being produced for a Filipino audience. Some will claim that statement to be racist, pero if we reverse the situation and watch a film na may Pinoy actors pero ang sensibilities and ideals ng movie eh clearly American, diba pupulaan nyo rin?

  35. I would simply like to offer a translation for the Filipino people, it seems as though the bulk of the meaning went over everyone's heads. For starters, nytimes critiqued the vehicle, but lauded the actress implying his desire to see her in another genre. Secondly, both latimes and village voice focused on the movie itself- not on Anne Curtis specifically. The former calling out the writing and directing skills of the project and when Anne's name is mentioned it's a formal introduction to the population of people who don't know her-- nothing negative. Once you take time to read carefully and understand each word in relation to each other, you will see that though it isn't a stellar review, it's not horrible. And though the movie itself might have been stale, Anne stood out enough to grab the attention of the nytimes movie critic leaving them wanting more, but outside of the movie Blood Ransom-- that was actually a compliment. I hope my break down of the language helps placate those who thought the reviews were derogatory.

anne did stand out, i'll give you that. but is that even enough for producers in hollywood to take a second look? i don't think so. i also didn't get the feeling the the review LAUDED the actress. they might have made suggestions but not lauded.

  55. I haven't seen the movie, but the fact na sya napili para sa movie is really something. Maraming factors ang dapat tignan like, yung script.
