“Ms. Curtis, Filipino-Australian actress making her American film debut, suffers nobly, with full lips and heavy eyelashes, parading in leather and occasionally acquiring fangs, a veiny complexion and flaring red eyes. She is not without charisma, but this is not her proper vehicle. It would be interesting to see her in a role of more down-to-earth dimensions.” - NY Times

“Filipino American writer-director Francis dela Torre does sort of the opposite with "Blood Ransom," creating something passably American but seeming to aim primarily at a Filipino audience. More than anything, the film plays like a vanity project for Filipino entertainer Anne Curtis, making her American movie debut.” - LA Times

“while the portentous glances and oblique dialogue of the undead evoke stylish '70s Euro-vampires — as do the trippy cuts and fade-outs — Oliver's manhunt feels more like a low-budget '80s potboiler. Fewer cops and more full-tilt vampire batshittery might not have resulted in a more coherent movie, necessarily, but almost certainly would've made for a more captivating one” - The Village Voice
Chararat ang movie!!! Tinulugan nga lang nung tito ko!!!
ReplyDeleteYikes! Sayang naman.. Sana kasi di vampire movie..
ReplyDeleteok lang the experience counts more... yun iba nga papress release na iiwan showbiz para makapaghollywood, wala naman nangyari kahit extra sa movie...yun kay anne, yea, it was not for her, but the fact na nasali sya sa even low budgeted film is something, di man naging successful, ang experience to be a part of it kahit waley, ok na yon rather than wala.... for that, isa pa din yun karangalan na may pinoy na nakapasok sa foreign film ... i hope shes not discriminated just coz she's half fil
DeleteANON 3:05 am, kahit ilang ulit mo ipilit yang hanashi mo, it won't disguise the fact that this was a BAD movie. At walang papuri na nilagay sa acting ni Anne, only ONE review referred to her "charisma" while also pointing out that it looked like a VANITY project. If you have no idea what vanity is and the negative connotation it has, you have no right to be all preachy here.
DeleteTrue Anon 11:16. It doesn't remove the fact that it was a bad movie and her acting didn't help either.
Deleteand it was not a Hollywood movie, but a low budget "indie" B one
DeleteWhat do you expect from a Z-list Twilight-wannabe? LOL
ReplyDeleteTrue!!!!
DeleteNo harm in trying. Its ok anne, everyone in Hollywood gets either criticized or praised, Even great famous actors of their own.. part of the business and part of a critics' job is to give frank and honest opinion about the movies. Dont take it too hard instead use it as a learning tool for future projects. Still proud of you Anne.
DeleteKaya po may negative review ang Hollywood elites na paulit ulit mo minemention ANON 2:15 am kasi they also made bad movies. Rationalize pa more. Hahahaha
DeleteEeeewww!!!
DeleteI'm just curious. Does she look Asian to you? Or can you say that she's somewhat Caucasian? Not that it's connected with how the movie turned out. I'm just not sure of how I see her.
ReplyDeleteshe does look like british/ english..not caucasian
DeleteIf you put a half bred noypi in a filipino crowd she'll standout no doubt but if you put her in a caucasian crowd she'll look very asian, nephews and nieces same with anne's mix thats what we observe
Brown skin.... Maganda pa.... Si anne nagmukhang ewan dito....
DeleteANOn 3:06 am, ano pinagsasabi mo dyan? Ano tawag mo sa mga Briton? You clearly have no idea what "caucasian" means. LOL!
Deletefor me, half asian-caucasian breeds (sorry for the term) are the most beautiful. stand out when put next to the asian, unique naman with caucasians. for me mas maganda ang asians compared to caucasians.
Deletelow budgeted naman kasi eh!
ReplyDeleteLow budget naman talaga ang mga indie pero eto hindi eh, talagang pangpinoy lang ang audience na mapleaplease dahil we watch for the celebrity not the content.
DeleteAray ko!
ReplyDeleteThe reviews that Philippines press are ignoring, LOL.
ReplyDeleteThey may not but of course you know how they'll react. Lam mo naman ang mga Pinoy, pikon.
Deleteconstructive criticism is fine, it will make you a better one..marami kasing pinoy na pikon like what anon1255 said...tanggapin na lang kasi iba iba opinion..and yea the movie kasi was not as high budget & well promoted like twilight or other vampire movie...
Better luck next time :)
ReplyDeleteagree 100%
DeleteHay, you make it sound na good reviews are based on luck. No it's not. It's based on the QUALITY of the film. Yung examples mo ng famous actors getting blasted, it's because they also have bad movies. So, sorry baks pero hindi po dinadaan sa swerte (or trending sa twitter) ang positive reviews ng isang pelikula
DeleteI agree Anne, use this as a learning tool. --Baclang Manicurista
Deletetama
Delete1:49am
DeleteHi baklang Manicurista,
Maski mag international sya, kaya at pwede nyang gawin un.
Dapat happy ka kc successful ang ating kababayan sa ibang bansa, No need to say na "Hanggang Showtime lang and beauty etc etc. di nmn sya mapapansin kung di pang international ang beauty nya dba? :) Love u!
Haters gonna hate.
DeleteYes. Clearly, the movie was made for Pinoy taste/sense. Sana mabawi man lang yung ginastos nila.
ReplyDeleteat least may charisma daw siya huehue. Pero Anne should learn from this and ang maganda is that nakapenetrate siya. I hope that she'll be given a chance, again,to prove that she truly deserves a spot in hollywood.
ReplyDeletewhat do you mean ang maganda naka penetrate sha. given the reviews, not really.
DeletePenetrate? She hardly made a dent dear. Hahahaha.
DeleteKasi naman di.naman tlaga marunong umarte si anne.. sa trailer parang dinadala lang ng voice nia but the acting is still bad
ReplyDeleteTrue
Deletetruth hurts
ReplyDeleteokay lang yan. transformers nga, pasok as one of the worst movies this year eh. you can't really please everybody. at least you were able to make a movie na released sa US. :)
ReplyDeleteAt least transformers earned more than what they spent. Not sure with blood ransom though.
Deletethe last transformers move was bad. boring pa
Delete"...It would be interesting to see her in a role of more down-to-earth dimensions."- NY times.
Nahahalata kasi ng mga Onak kapag trying hard to pass as "American" ang isang film outing, like this one. So any inconsistency or stylistic shortcoming ng movie eh, sad to say, they will attribute to the film being produced for a Filipino audience. Some will claim that statement to be racist, pero if we reverse the situation and watch a film na may Pinoy actors pero ang sensibilities and ideals ng movie eh clearly American, diba pupulaan nyo rin?
ReplyDeleteSayang naman yung hype. Todo patrend pa sila sa twitter at inaaway ng fantards ni anita ang mga nanghuhusga sa film sa twitter pero ang ending, it's all for naught! LOL!
ReplyDeleteIn short.. Nganga mga fanturds! Lol
DeleteI want to hear what the surviving member of the Siskel & Ebert critics team have to say about the movie? They can give very scathing reviews kasi. LOL!
ReplyDeleteMaybe they find it unworthy of a review. Haha
DeleteO rotten tomatoes
Baka pa nga pati madownload as torrent hindi papasa eh hahah
Deletelet's put it this way: not all of julia roberts' or sandra bullock's movies got good reviews and they're 'hollywood', meanwhile, it is anne's first attempt and it's nice that her name is on the nytimes and latimes. it's a big deal. too many movies, local and foreign, are screened in america and they are not even recognized. go anne, go pinoy directors, go pinoy producers, create, inspire and continue the journey. #pinoypride
ReplyDeleteNaman! #pinoypride pa rin. please lang!
Deletewhat you said versus what lav diaz, nora aunor, and brillante mendoza have accomplished! yours is #falsepinoypride.
Mas ok yata may variety.
DeletePangett ksi ang vampire theme eh. Dunno but it diddnt suit anne not to mention low budget lng ang movie. I think mas naging interesting pa ang movie kung ginawang psycho-thriller/suspense. Or yung mind boggling ang plot. And mejo boring din tlga ang blood ransom sobrang bagal ng pacing and kulang s dating all in all. Pero at least din Anne got to experience to make a hollywood film and the critic even acknowledge Anne's charisma.
ReplyDeletePrimera actress ng kaF yan!
ReplyDeleteagree sa LA Times
ReplyDeleteTruth hurts. Dinala kasi sa ngabngaban. There is always a next time, or better yet, give it up.
ReplyDeleteMaybe she should get some training from the trainors of the Hollywood stars para makuha niya ang hinahanap ng tina-target niya. No harm in trying. Kahit dito sa Pinas magagamit niya yun.
ReplyDeleteOOOOOOOUUUUUUCCCCCHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Delete2:28 research-research kapag may time, you bell*nd. Sila Jo, Sam, Ange and Jasmine Kuhn plus Tita Vange ay family friends namin that's why I know about this.
Delete@9:39 Jo, Sam and Ange, too.
Delete8:34 marami. Like the whole family ay kaibigan siya.
DeleteIdk about that po, I only see her at events and parang never naman siya naging mean. :)
Kahit anong panget ng movie plot Kung magaling umarte yung artista tyak na mapapansin yung acting skills nya. Sa kaso ni Anne Curtis, nabigyan na nga cya ng chance to do an American indie film Hindi pa nya inayos ang bano nyang pag-arte. Nakakahiya tuloy cya!
ReplyDelete3:58am I'm sure you didn't understand the review very well. Wala nman sinabi na Anne cant act, sabi nga she has charisma and hopefully a down to earth role. Its an indie film, so meaning a low budget film. Ano nman nkakahiya?
Deletebano ang acting ni anne, according to only the "BASHERS/HATERS" hindi inintindi ang review. PUSH pa.
DeleteWag nyong i-level si Anne Curtis sa Hollywood elites like Julia Roberts or Sandra Bollock please!
Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock are hollywood elites pero napagdaanan nila yang mga kritiko bago sila naging successful. Get it? Gamit din ng utak pag may time.
DeleteANON 3:47 pm, Julia and Sandra have TALENT. Yung ang difference. Get it? Gamit din ng utak and sensory organs pag may time.
DeleteI have nothing against the movie... in fact proud ako kasi Filipino film in Hollywood (kahit na indie sya). Ang ayoko lang eh yung masyadong "in your face" PR ng dos... Kapag flop sabihin nyo na flop... di yung iba yung sinasabi nyo sa madlang people ;p
ReplyDeleteIt is a B movie after all. PLEASE do not compare with the films of Sandra Bullock or Julia Roberts, they are A list actress. Anne Curtis is a wannabe actress. The film was just shown in the States and not a mainstream movie. Taas naman ng pangarap ng mga fantards ni Anne to even think that it is a Hollywood movie of Titanic proportions
ReplyDeleteat least may movie na made in hollywood. madami naman pangit na films na sumikat, di ba. who knows, 20 years from now, maging cult classic ito!
ReplyDeleteThe truth hurts.
ReplyDeleteI would simply like to offer a translation for the Filipino people, it seems as though the bulk of the meaning went over everyone's heads. For starters, nytimes critiqued the vehicle, but lauded the actress implying his desire to see her in another genre. Secondly, both latimes and village voice focused on the movie itself- not on Anne Curtis specifically. The former calling out the writing and directing skills of the project and when Anne's name is mentioned it's a formal introduction to the population of people who don't know her-- nothing negative. Once you take time to read carefully and understand each word in relation to each other, you will see that though it isn't a stellar review, it's not horrible. And though the movie itself might have been stale, Anne stood out enough to grab the attention of the nytimes movie critic leaving them wanting more, but outside of the movie Blood Ransom-- that was actually a compliment. I hope my break down of the language helps placate those who thought the reviews were derogatory.
ReplyDeleteVery well said...
Deletesus! gets naman yung review. The film was made in bad taste and had wrong casting. In short, bad review pa rin. There's no gray area or middle ground, my friend. Panget yung movie, that's it!
Laudable effort, pero this is not the place.
Lol!
Deleteto tell you the truth we don't need you to translate. we understand it perfectly well. bottom line is this movie, which the local media, specifically those belonging in anne's home network, touted this film as something we ought to spend our hard-earned money to watch, actually ended as a failure, not worthy of our spending 2 hours of our time and P200.
Deleteanne did stand out, i'll give you that. but is that even enough for producers in hollywood to take a second look? i don't think so. i also didn't get the feeling the the review LAUDED the actress. they might have made suggestions but not lauded.
DeleteAnne, thanks so much for the long explanation.
DeleteHi Erwan!
DeleteActually, di naman talaga i re release to if di binili or binugetan ng Viva. Ang tagal ng tapos ng Movie this time lang linabas. .
ReplyDeleteRemember Jennifer Aniston was in the movie "Leprechaun", she had regrets about it, but it was somehow a step. :)
Ganyan kaprangka. Baka naman maoffend pa kayo. Siguro naman after this baka sakali ma-gets nyo na si ateng.
ReplyDelete-HampasLupa
No amount of exposure to this culture will rationalize arrogant behavior.
DeleteThere's a difference between being frank and being arrogant.
DeleteI like her frankness. I guess it's because I am not impressed with "sugar-coating". If it would be a hard blow, then so be it. Sorry, but I don't find Lea arrogant at all.
DeleteIts a humbling experience for Anne.Hindi komo indie low-quality.More than anything deplorable acting nya..popular sya dati pero the venerable critics based their review on the movie and most of all sa role nya na di naman nya nabigyan ng justice.....eat your humble pie dear.
ReplyDeleteHollywood is a big world where critics have those eagle eyes with the wholeness of the film and not just the celebrity starred in the film. This is a good learning experience to Anne to hone her craft even more and for the film maker to be more creative. The reviews were more of veering towards the film and not Anne herself.
ReplyDeleteI don't care about Anne Curtis' performance in Blood Ransom. When I saw the trailer, I knew that this movie was overall terrible.
ReplyDeleteSomebody please bring in some ice packs, someone got burned really hard. Lol
ReplyDeleteShe can buy you, your friends, this club, but not the american critics and viewers. Gotta save more, Anne!
DeleteTulog na Anne AKA 8:23 pm, gotta save more money!
Deletefantard alert!
DeleteWe understand you 8:23 pm, u are die hard fan of ms. Anne!
Good job for Anne, nakakaproud, remember, hindi dapat magmayabang or masyadong magexpect, basta pinoy or local suportahan lang ang sariling atin. ang inggit walang mararating yan.
ReplyDeleteI don't see any sentence lauding Anne's acting. The NY critic said "charisma", referring more to Anne's appeal rather than her acting. And vanity project simply means when translated to Tagalog, para maipakita lang na may anne curtis na nage exists sa Pilipinas.
ReplyDeleteKorek! Yung mga nagmamarunong na fantards they latch on to that one pseudo-positive line tapos todo expound pa at todo compare sa ibang Hollywood elites even though walang point of comparison. Very pathetic.
DeleteWtf 7.8/10 ang rating nya sa IMDB kaloka! Napakainconsistent nya compare sa critic reviews. Malamang care of anne's fanturds yun!
ReplyDeleteYung mga fantards ng lasengga nagiimbento pa ng translation for the reviews, eh plain and simple they DISLIKE the film. Try as you might to find a silver lining, this movie (and its actress) plainly SUCK.
As for haters maliit lang utak nila, theyre expecting big/more from anne agad which is not normal. alam naman natin ang reason why.
ReplyDeleteFilm failed, Anne cannot buy acting.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the movie, but the fact na sya napili para sa movie is really something. Maraming factors ang dapat tignan like, yung script.
Another success and celebration. lol
ReplyDeleteNo matter how we see it, the film was underwhelming. The trailer says it all.
ReplyDelete#ConstructiveCriticism for Anne
ReplyDeleteAhaha. Gracious po ang reviews. They were just being kind with positive phrasing but no kissass. It sucked period. She sucked period.
ReplyDeleteLol in tagalog, pampalubag loob,
Deleteuhhm yung mga nagiging successful na tao ganyan ang nagiging simula, kasi i believe you can learn from your wrong doings. hindi maswerte si anne sa lahat ng bagay at lahat ng tao, hindi rin lahat kaya gawin ng pera, aminin natin, naibabash natin si anne kasi nagkaroon sya ng opportunity for that project hindi lang natin matangap ito, we are waiting for this critics kung ano masasabi nila kasi alam natin 1st timer lang si anne kaya d talaga ganun kalaki ang expectations mo, dun lang tayo huhugot para maibaba si anne. tapos pag nagka project ulit si anne d nanaman natin matangap, repeat again, rewind ulit sa past issues para ibash sya... mas nakakahiya ang ganitong mga comments. trying too put the person down, kaya lalong umaangat ang dyosa eh. alam ko umaangat sya pag naiinis nanaman ang mga bashers sa kanya.
ReplyDeleteYou can buy the club, friends in the Phils.
ReplyDeleteBut u cant buy hollywood!
Ang trying hard kase. yuck.
ReplyDelete
