La Salle's coaches almost stole the show on Saturday when they showed up for the Green Archers' UAAP season debut sporting a new look, wearing green neckties and green pants, topped off by a white jacket.
When Spin.ph asked around the league on why coach Juno Sauler and his staff chose to sport a unique look, one La Salle official pointed to top team patron Danding Cojuangco.
“It was Mr. Cojuangco’s idea. He wants the coaching (staff) to have a clean look,” said the official.
Another La Salle executive confirmed that the chique party wardrobe was indeed adopted on the advice of Cojuangco, who wore the same outfit as the coaching staff's.
But when asked if the attire was a part of a ‘pahiyang,’ the official readily laughed and nodded in approval.
If it was indeed a 'pahiyang,' it didn't work. The Archers dropped a 77-82 loss to Far Eastern University and the new look - or more specifically the green pants - took quite a bashing on social media networks.
The game was not the first time that La Salle coaches made a ‘fashion statement.’
Two years ago, the Green Archers’ coaching staff led by former coach Gee Abanilla sported white polo shirts and khaki pants. And then last year, La Salle shifted to its usual polo shirt attire.
Sauler explained that it was the idea of the coaching staff to have a uniform.
“Eto ‘yung uniform namin this year eh,” he said.
The soft-spoken coach who led La Salle to a championship right in his rookie season admitted that his staff has yet to get used to the attire, and even asked the media how it looked on them.
“Maganda ba? Kung maganda ba, tuloy namin. Kung ayaw niyo, palitan namin. Maybe in three days, we will be used to it,” said Sauler said smiling.
Despite the loss and the Twitter bashing, however, Sauler said the coaching stafff has no plan to make a wardrobe change anytime soon.
“No connection to the outcome of the game," said Sauler.
