India: Teen Sisters Allegedly Gang-Raped, Hanged to Death in Uttar Pradesh; Cops Suspected

Authorities in northern India said Thursday that they have arrested three men, including two police officers, suspected of gang-raping and killing two teenage sisters before hanging their bodies from a mango tree, sparking renewed public outrage over sexual violence in the country.

Villagers found the girls’ bodies hanging from the tree Wednesday morning, hours after they disappeared from fields near their home in Katra village in Uttar Pradesh state, police Superintendent Atul Saxena said. The girls, who were 14 and 15, had gone into the fields because there was no toilet in their home.

Hundreds of angry villagers spent the rest of Wednesday in silent protest over alleged police inaction in the case. Indian TV channels showed video of the villagers sitting under the girls’ bodies as they swung in the wind, preventing authorities from taking them down from the tree until the suspects were arrested.

Police arrested the three men later in the day and were searching for four more suspects.

Autopsies confirmed the girls had been gang-raped and strangled before being hung, Saxena said.

The villagers accused the chief of the local police station of ignoring a complaint by the girls’ father Tuesday night that the girls were missing. The station chief has since been suspended.

The family belongs to the Dalit community, also called “untouchables” and considered the lowest rung in India’s age-old caste system.

India tightened its anti-rape laws last year, making gang rape punishable by the death penalty. The new laws came after nationwide protests over the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a moving bus in New Delhi that triggered nationwide protests.

Records show a rape is committed every 22 minutes in India, a nation of 1.2 billion people. Activists say that number is low because of an entrenched culture of tolerance for sexual violence, which leads many cases to go unreported. Women are often pressed by family or police to stay quiet about sexual assault, experts say, and those who do report cases are often subjected to public ridicule or social stigma.

Last month, the head of Uttar Pradesh state’s governing party told an election rally that the party was opposed to the law calling for gang rapists to be executed.

    1. rape happens everywhere, hindi lang sa india...we don't have to generalize just because lately eh maraming nababalitang ganito sa kanila...if we wanna be respected and not be stereotyped, we should also have the intelligence not to do the same

ayaw nila ng stigma as rape capital of the world then gawan nila ng paraan to solve all those crimes!

    3. Ektuali, if they change the sentence that dealt with the crime, like cutting off the rapist's penis, rape would become extinct so fast, it will just be studied in history books.

  12. india. one of worst country for women.

  13. Cows are treated a lot better than women in India. How sad is that? To be born as a girl in that country is like a curse; you have to look after yourself because you can't trust the police and you can't even rely on your own family. Authorities pay the parents for their silence and if they push for justice, sila pa ang kinukulong. I will never visit that country, I will just admire the Taj Mahal in pictures.

    1. if it's not safe for women to travel there, i won't go there either.

    2. Been there not once but 4 times and felt safe. Women in the office are not allowed to stay back beyond 7pm, else, you need to get approval from the HR and will be escorted when you go back in your hotel when your task is done. I once had a night-out with them too and went home past 11pm and yet can see ladies around having fun in restobars. So, for me pareho lang dito sa Pinas, mas na sensationalize lang sa kanila. But in fairness, panay isa lang ang rapist karamihan sa atin.

    3. excuse me, anon 8:03, dont compare pinas and india. sa atin, mataas naman ang tingin ng tao sa babae. sa india, walang kwenta tingin nila sa babae kaya nga may nire-rape every 22 minutes. but it's good to hear that there are still areas in india na safe kahit papaano ang mga babae. but i do hope for your safety when you go back to india

  29. They are not sisters, they are cousins. Initial news though reported them as siblings. Their parents had lodged missing complaints to the police the night they disappeared but due to their low caste, the officer had dismissed their concerns and had not even registered the case. That too, despite witnesses who came forward, seeing the girls grabbed with one relative scuffling with one of the the perpetrators to prevent the kidnap. All five suspects are arrested - two of them are members of the police force.

  35. This makes my blood boil. India's caste system is sickening - it played a massive part in these girls' uncle reporting that he saw 3 men drag his nieces in fields. The girls and the uncle belong to the Dalit group (bottom of the food chain) while the police officers and the perpetrators belong to a group higher than them. Sickening. The police allegedly offered the families £5000 which theyrefused and demanded justice instead. India's authorities are sick. In 2012, that medical student was gang-raped on a public bus in Delhi...in 2014 a Danish tourist in Delhi and now 2 girls got gang-raped in the provinces....and those are reported rapes! One of their politicians said that "boys will be boys"...if that's their leadership, I feel for the women and girls in India.

  36. The growing number of gang rape and other sexual abuse cases in India is a living proof to how the country treats women nowadays. It has something to with their screwed-up culture. Yan ang napapala nila sa Kama Sutra at sobrang hilig sa mga maaanghang na pagkain.
