1:05 The Cebuano/Bisaya accent is quite close to American accent, that is, for spoken English. For example, I had a Fil-Am classmate who knows Tagalog very well but never heard her speak in Tagalog. During a group project we managed to make her talk in Tagalog. When she spoke, parang taga Bisaya ang punto niya, mas malambot at parang mas may arte nga lang.
Anyway may classmate ako bisaya sya. Tigas ng dila sa tagalog kaya nahihiya sya pero pag nagbasa ng english teh! Sarap sa tenga correct usage of p and f, b and v at american accent talga na normal lang sakanya di ginagawa. So I understand ellen. I have a friend from Cebu and he also speaks and understands English better than Tagalog :) He can't even understand any Tagalog when he first came to Manila.

A Texan sounds different from a New Yorker. You can even distinguish the whites, the African American, and the Hispanics the way they speak English. Very true! Ang hirap kasi most people from imperial Manila always think that they "speak better" and people from the Visayas are dumb when they can't string together a sentence in Tagalog. Bilang Bisaya ako, I can agree with this. Ganyan ang showbiz, wala tayong magagawa. Even foreign or foreign-raised celebs whose first language is English have adapted and learned (ex. Sam Milby, James Reid, etc.). She should learn to adapt.
I also wouldn't mind if we promote mainstream films and shows that also feature Bisaya or even other dialects. The problem is, no one seems to want to do it. Pero it's an opportunity, right? Sana mayrong maginvest or makaisip - perhaps Bisayans, or Warays, or Pampangueños, or Ilocanos in the industry could push for some projects na ganyan. I saw Yanggaw, that indie film in Ilonggo, and it was good. No reason why we can't have that if industry people actually wanted to.
But in the meantime, while that's not happening, then people like Ellen need to adapt. "When in Rome..."

She's working in Manila, where most people can't understand Cebuano, so the best solution to her problem is to get used on speaking Tagalog regularly. In time, she will speak just as well as other celebrities, parang sina Kim Chiu at Erich Gonzales. Yun nga lang, may mga bashers talaga na ayaw tantanan. Some are even discriminatory towards Filipinos outside Metro Manila. Haaaaaay!

I think magka-iba ang meaning ng " Thick accent" sa "wrong grammar"... If you got "Thick accent" from your native land it doesn't mean that you are Commited to speak "Wrong grammar". Having a thick accent shows that you are proud of your root and not ashamed of it. If you speak in " Wrong grammar" regardless your nativity it means that you do not learn from proper composition of your English 101. But on a lighter note, engaging to speak "Wrong grammar" is not only for those who did not even go to higher level of education. Hindi lahat ng magaling at maganda ang accent eh magaling sa English. if someone speaks tagalog in a bisaya accent, you mock him and laugh endlessly! - and if they converse in English, you say naman na " maarte" and "trying hard". I don't understand why it's such an issue to people. When tagalog people come to visayas they don't speak our tongue and we don't make a big fuss about it! I am bisaya and seriously, I can't speak tagalog well. I sound funny when I speak tagalog. I guess dahil may accent ang bisaya na masyadong thick and strong and tagalog is a little bit malumanay...and it's easier for us to speak English than tagalog...

Anyone can speak english regardless what region you came from. If you hear some of the our politicians, teachers etc when they speak in english its quite hard, almost stressing every words with pinoy accent. BUT all in correct grammar. Unlike to this girl, she speaks in english a lot but shes not aware of her grammar. Importantly, she talks with NO SENSE basta makapag-english lang ng mali-mali. DOON SYA NALALAIT. Hindi sa bisaya accent nya.
OMG. Filipino is our national language and not TAGALOG. ReplyDeleteBilang Bisaya ako, I can agree with this. Ganyan ang showbiz, wala tayong magagawa. Even foreign or foreign-raised celebs whose first language is English have adapted and learned (ex. Sam Milby, James Reid, etc.). She should learn to adapt.
DeleteI also wouldn't mind if we promote mainstream films and shows that also feature Bisaya or even other dialects. The problem is, no one seems to want to do it. Pero it's an opportunity, right? Sana mayrong maginvest or makaisip - perhaps Bisayans, or Warays, or Pampangueños, or Ilocanos in the industry could push for some projects na ganyan. I saw Yanggaw, that indie film in Ilonggo, and it was good. No reason why we can't have that if industry people actually wanted to.
But in the meantime, while that's not happening, then people like Ellen need to adapt. "When in Rome..."

She's working in Manila, where most people can't understand Cebuano, so the best solution to her problem is to get used on speaking Tagalog regularly. In time, she will speak just as well as other celebrities, parang sina Kim Chiu at Erich Gonzales. Yun nga lang, may mga bashers talaga na ayaw tantanan. Some are even discriminatory towards Filipinos outside Metro Manila. Haaaaaay!

ReplyDeleteI think magka-iba ang meaning ng " Thick accent" sa "wrong grammar"... If you got "Thick accent" from your native land it doesn't mean that you are Commited to speak "Wrong grammar". Having a thick accent shows that you are proud of your root and not ashamed of it. If you speak in " Wrong grammar" regardless your nativity it means that you do not learn from proper composition of your English 101. But on a lighter note, engaging to speak "Wrong grammar" is not only for those who did not even go to higher level of education. Hindi lahat ng magaling at maganda ang accent eh magaling sa English. And hindi lahat ng magaling sa grammar is maganda ang accent. As long as people understand you. But in Ellen's case, hindi kasi maintindihan yung English nya not because of her accent and grammar but because of Wrong composition of her phrases. ReplyDeleteFP,taga negros po ako ha,hiligaynon yung tawag sa salita namin mostly from spanish origins.bukod kasi sa lingua franca na dialect namin,english yung talagang parang 2nd language namin mga bisaya.we can write and understand tagalog but sa pananalita di kami comfortable kasi nga matigas yung pronunciation namin,tas yung iba tao they're making fun of us.sabihin bisaya ka no? matter of practice lang talaga para magandang pakinggan na magtagalog.LIke kay Jonh Estrada for example.pero kung gagawa ako ng excuse,mandamay ako no,bakit si madame miriam tagal na dito bakit mag salita siya ng tagalog ilonggo accent pa rin? Mga pamangkin kung laking maynila tinatawanan ako magtagalog pero pag nagsalita na ako ng english,nga2 naman sila.respeto na lang.
ReplyDelete^^^^ true. When i went to cebu, cebuanos preferred to speak in english kasi mahirap magtagalog for them. But their english is really good, might even be better than some manilenos.

ReplyDeleteMadali kasing i-distinguish kung ano ang Bisaya ng mga Cebuano at Bisaya ng mga taga-Mindanao. Mas madaling intindihin ang Bisaya ng mga taga-Mindanao (particularly Davao) is because halu-halo na ang mga wika doon, compared sa Cebu na malalim talaga silang mag-Bisaya.

I first went to manila when i graduated from college. i remember during my interviews kapag tinatanong ako ng tagalog sinasagot ko ng english kasi nakakahiya baka mali ang bigkas ko. here is the fact: inaaral namin ang tagalog hangang 2nd yr college if m not mistaken pero kapag ba mathematical expression natatagalog ba?in short half of our lives d nag eexist ang filipino language.lahat ng explanations ng guro either english or waray.7yrs nko sa cavite kaya kahit panu hasa na tagalog ko :) #bkanamanbgolangdinsyasamanila :)
ReplyDeleteif someone speaks tagalog in a bisaya accent, you mock him and laugh endlessly! - and if they converse in English, you say naman na " maarte" and "trying hard". I don't understand why it's such an issue to people. When tagalog people come to visayas they don't speak our tongue and we don't make a big fuss about it! Why force us to use a language that makes it harder for us to speak our mind.

ReplyDeleteI am bisaya and seriously, I can't speak tagalog well. I sound funny when I speak tagalog. I guess dahil may accent ang bisaya na masyadong thick and strong and tagalog is a little bit malumanay...and it's easier for us to speak English than tagalog...

ReplyDeleteAnyone can speak english regardless what region you came from. If you hear some of the our politicians, teachers etc when they speak in english its quite hard, almost stressing every words with pinoy accent. BUT all in correct grammar. Unlike to this girl, she speaks in english a lot but shes not aware of her grammar. Importantly, she talks with NO SENSE basta makapag-english lang ng mali-mali. DOON SYA NALALAIT. Hindi sa bisaya accent nya.

Filipino language adapted a lot of words from other dialects so please STOP assuming na TAGALOG is the national language. and also tayong mga pinoy masyado tayong focus sa AMERICAN ENGLISH. labas labas din kayo ng ibang bansa pag may time and you will realized how stupid the AMERICAN ENGLISH is.
