During his joint press briefing with Aquino on Monday afternoon and state dinner a few hours later, Obama referred to the Philippine leader as either "Niño" or "Nonoy."
The US leader's confusion drew snark on Twitter.
Ang gwapo nito ni Pres Obama. Pwede ba akong maging "nicole" sa buhay mo? Hahahaha!
ReplyDeleteeeew...porke USA pres gwapo na?
DeleteAsus ilalampaso ka sa sahig ng white house ni michelle!
DeletePasok naman lahat ung name na un ke Pnoy!
DeleteAhm, hindi kaya! Pero kung mag lakad siya, ang hit! Gandarous ng tindig niya! Compare mo sa lakad ni pnot.
Deleteknakabahan kaya aq nun bka mbgkas nya pa ung isang word na may NOY sa dulo! wahh!
Deleteeven the worlds most powerful man can commit mistakes. his just human.
ReplyDelete*He's just a human, ateng Klassy.
Deleteokay na sana kundi lang dahil jan sa HIS mo. push mopa te!
DeleteI guess all the commenters on the web are at lost. I tried to rewind the audio several times and conspicouosly listened to it. It Was the other way he pronounced Benigno unlike what our Filipino Folks pronounced, instead of a stark "Be" "nig" he said it with silent Be and nig together with n which comes from spanish accent "nin". and i think there's nothing wrong with how he pronounced it, we have different mother tounge and we have different reading system. Like the German word "DIE" which is read as "The" and the word "DEI" is read as "DIE".
ReplyDeleteSilent "BE"? Pauso ka dyan.
DeleteI second that! He said, Mr. Benigno as Beñino as they used to Spanish names/terms in the US. He's not wrong at all.
Deletethey * ARE used to I meant.
DeleteI agree. Similar to the Italian word Signorina. I guess the person who did OB's speech didn't note how to pronounce Pnoy's name.
DeleteWell said.
DeleteOk lang, the mistake doesn't matter, the mistake in the name doesn't change the incompetence of the nameholder.
ReplyDeletenadali mo!
DeletePak! Very well said!!
Deletekorek ka dyan!
DeleteSuper correct!
DeleteNahirapan lang sya siguro sa Noynoy.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA! Ganun talaga.
ReplyDeletePansin k lamg boompanes si obama sa english ni pnoy. Aba mas magaling pa ang pangulo natin sknya. Haha. Proud of u pnoy
ReplyDeleteim dont agree. i think PNoy talked so fast like real fast that it couldnt be deciphered anymore. yes he can speak good english but pls dont talk fast next time.
DeletePnoy spent time in Boston when he was younger. So he could speak English the way Americans do
DeleteI disagree! Mabilis magsalita si PNoy, parang may hinahabol. Si Obama, kalma lang.
DeleteMas tama talaga ang english ang mga pinoy kesa sa mga kano.syempre depende pa din. Tayo kasi grammar nazi, sila naman hindi kahit ba iyon ang mother tongue nila, kaya nga some foreign people know na hindi ka american through hearing you or reading your sentence(pwera syempre pag kaharap ka na,it will be obvious) kapag gramatically correct ka.
ReplyDeleteHindi pinoy si Pres Obama kay don't expect him to pronounce our pinoy names correctly. Hindi naman American si Pres Noynoy kaya don't expect him to pronounce english correctly. Ganon lang ka simple un. Di nyo pa ba ma gets?
ReplyDeletei think si Obama basa nya sa Benigno is Beniño. Kasi pag italian yan ganyan ang pagbasa. since hindi naman ganun ka popular ang Filipino language worldwide e u pronounce it the way u know how. for nonoy, i guess hindi lang nya ma pronounce as noy-noy or hindi na rehearse beforehand
DeleteObama was in the Senate, NOT in congress. And was in Harvard Law, and editor of Harvard law review. He's a lawyer. So..... pasang-awa ba?
Deletewalang sense magsalita si Noynoy tagalog o english. Hindi niya naiintindihan sinasabi niya.
ReplyDeleteIf you watch or listen to international news, they read Benigno as Beniño. Yan ang napansin ko. Maybe that's how they read and pronounce it kaya Niño ang nababanggit ni Obama.
ReplyDeleteWa ako pakels. Mukhang hindi naman naoffend si Pnoy e.
ReplyDeleteAng dami talagang mabababaw na tao. Big deal ba yun magkamali ng pagtawag ng nickname? wow ha! nakakab*b*
ReplyDeleteNothing to talk about really.
ReplyDeleteoks lang. alam naman ni Pnoy na sya yung tinutukoyi
