The sixteen-year-old Watson from Southfield, Michigan was safe in Thursday night’s (Friday morning in Manila) elimination round that sent home Ben Briley, according to “Idol’s” Twitter account.
Watson, whose name means free in Filipino, received a standing ovation from the judges with her performance of the song “I Am Changing” from the Broadway play-turned-movie “Dreamgirls.”
On Broadway, the song was performed by the character Effie who realized she had to change for the better to have another shot in the music industry.
The song seemed fitting for Watson who has donned a new look, shedding the playful little girl’s image she had since she entered “Idol.”
Pop star and judge Jennifer Lopez gave her a standing ovation. “Yes! Yes! Good girl, Malaya! That’s a perfect song for you. A perfect way to end the show!” she said.
“That was a killer. You have an amazing voice, oh my God!” Lopez exclaimed.
Musician Keith Urban said Watson has a “good understanding of the songs that apply to your strength.”
“That song was perfect to play to your strength… What you’ve got inside there that’s going to blossom is magnificent,” Urban said.
Singer-actor Harry Connick Jr. even called Watson a “big-belter.”
“Over the course of this competition, your voice is going to get thicker and better, and it’s going to be a pleasure to watch. Nice job!” he added.
Watson will join the rest of the top 10 in the Idol’s summer tour.
DeleteAko! LOL!
DeleteKung walang interesado eh di walang nanunood at kung walang nanunood eh di wala sanang AI ngayon...Maging masaya ka na lang te, wag muna nega ha, PUH-LEEEZZZ!!!
DeleteGive it 2 more seasons and then exit na.
Nkakaka proud. Pinoy fried!
ReplyDeleteLast yr sa AI, di naka pasok isang pinay from Alaska, Adriana Latonio.
Deletefriedchicken??
DeleteHoooray! Hooooray!
ReplyDeleteyey! galeng!
ReplyDeleteapplause, applause!
ReplyDeletehilig makisakay ng pinoy. wag angkinin ang di atin. she does not even speak tagalog!
ReplyDeleteKorek! AMERICAN Idol nga eh, tapos pa-PRIDE PRIDE tayo... napaka pathetic ng dating...
DeleteHamuna teh. First time naman may pangalan sa kanila na Pinoy na pinoy talaga. Ikaw naman oh. :DD
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteUyyy. In fairness you're changing nga.
ReplyDeleteThis show is so laos na.. It was covered by x factor the voice etc etc
ReplyDeleteAnon 4:46 pm...prinito mo
ReplyDeletetlg ang Pinoy hahaha "fried"
i love that she even mentioned the meaning of her name in the show.. i'll be rooting for her.. just sad that American Idol is no longer the big "Idol" show that it used to be..
ReplyDeleteGoodluck Malaya!
ReplyDeleteDear My Fellow Kababayans,
ReplyDeleteSorry to break this to you but unless she herself pronounce that she's a filipino, she is not ours.
American Idol nga eh.maghintay ka matapos ang competition o malaglag si malaya and for sure saka sya magiging proud like jessica.then makakapagconcert na din sya dito then promote her album blah blah.uto uto talaga tayo mga pinoy.
ReplyDeleteinfairness to her.. she said na ang name nya ay malaya meaning freedom.. so proud pa din sya...
ReplyDeleteDear Anon 12:47,
ReplyDeleteObviously, di ka nanunuod ng AI. She mentioned during the Hollywood Rush week ng AI na her name means freedom in filipino cause her mom is a Filipina. Ano pa gusto mong pruweba?
I still think mas magaling mga winners/contestants ng AI over The Voice.
ReplyDeleteMalaya means free. Kalayaan is freedom. Anyways, she is not a remarkable singer. Trying hard to be cute but she's really annoying. Jena Irene & Caleb Johnson are my bets.
ReplyDeleteInfer sa nanay. Ganda ng pinangalan sa anak. :)
