What's with the Year?

It is still more than two months to go before the current year 2013 ends, and yet the series of showbiz scandals and controversies that had come to the fore one after the other seem appalling.

In showbiz, there is the shocking break-up of the 5-year relationship of Billy Crawford and Nikki Gil. Not as shocking, but equally surprising was the expiration of Derek Ramsey and Cristine Reyes' one-month love affair. And recently, the misfortune that befell Luis Manzano and Jennylyn Mercado's love story just two days into their second anniversary.

Not to be outdone are the controversies between Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz, as well as the long and headline-hogging legal battle between ex-spouses Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago.

And of course, who can forget the tedious and painful saga of the Barretto's?

On the political front, never had the country been witness to such mind-boggling corruption scandals ever. The reported misuse of billions upon billions of taxpayers' money that went to Congress PDAF Priority Development Assistance Fund aka Pork Barrel funds are supposed to have massively corrupted the minds and the souls of our Public Servants.

Historically, nowhere would we have known that these supposedly Honorable Statesmen will be presumed as lawmakers slash lawbreakers slash thieves of unimaginable proportions. Where do we run to now?

We have been badly hit by countless calamities in the past, year in and year out. But the magnitude of the recent events - all compressed within a year - is something to take a hard look on and deserve some serious reflection.

Some people say that our Creator must have been angered so bad that He allowed these tragedies to happen so close to each other: typhoons, war in Zamboanga, earthquakes in the Visayas resulting in hunger all over - all deadly, catastrophic and mind-boggling.

A few analysts and soothsayers point out that the #13 in 2013 has something to do with it. Others say this signifies that the second coming of Christ is upon us. It may be biblical, scientific or superstition - what is your take?

What is it in 2013? What are the events telling us? Please share us your thoughts. Would love to hear from you, dear FP readers.

" Everywhere one seeks to produce meaning, to make the world signify, to render it visible. We are not, however, in danger of lackin g meaning; quite the contrary, we are gorged with meaning and it is killing us. " ~ ShareJean Baudrillard

    2. @12:20AM TUMPAK! isang malaking check. Minsan kasi "religion" pa ang nagiging sanhi ng mga kaguluhan. Mapupuno ang page/comments section if iisa isahin natin ang mga karahasan sa history in the name of their GOD. Walang masama sa pagkarelihiyoso if it will give you hope and peace pero kung sa masama/maling paraan na like feeling mo superior ka at mang aapak ka ng mga taong hindi mo kaparehas ng paniniwala ay ibang usapan na yan.

    3. Bravo 12:20! I have been educated in Catholic schools, but as I got older, I longed to search for the truth. Naka-3 religion na po ako, wala akong nakitang katotohanan sa kanila. All I witnessed are lies and hypocrisy and the greed for money. The common belief that religion is a business is an understatement. Because unlike legit businesses, walang talo at puro pakinabang ang LAHAT ng religion, at the expense of the members.

Now I am happily detached from any organized religion, I have never been free all my life. Without any guilt since then because I know I am pleasing God more.

    4. Happy for you, 9:18. The world would be a much better place without religion, especially religious fanaticism.

  6. Year 2013, is by far the worst year for me because of the earthquake that hit here in Cebu and also in Bohol. Actually as of now, malakas parin ang aftershocks. Nakakatrauma narin. Sana lang sana hindi na mangyari ulit. :(

  8. i don't believe sa mga malas malas na yan. like kailangan may buddah sa bahay para lucky daw. hindi swerte ang 13 kasi malas. i still consider 2013 lucky, kasi nabuking mga magnanakaw na pulitiko. imagine matagal na pala gingawa ng mga magnanakawa na yan sa bayan natin. but still sana next year wala ng mga lindol or masamang panahon. God bless our country!

    2. Look to science for the answer. The Philippines is disaster-prone because of its geography or location. The Philippines is part of the ring of fire (with active tectonic plate movements and volcanoes) and this country is located within the typhoon path that originate from the Pacific ocean. There are no mysteries about these disasters and calamities.

    3. Different religions. Only One God.

    4. Itong notion na different religion one God e deceiving and delikado! There is One God in 3 persons. And Hindi ganito paniniwala ng lahat! Coz other religions do not consider Jesus as the Son of God! And While some "acknowledge" it, they still worship idols and images! So they are not worshiping one true God! Mahabang explanation Ito e.

  12. Our country is situated in the ring of fire and typhoon path. All these calamities are to be expected. Typhoons, flooding and earthquakes have been happening to the Philippine archipelago since the islands were formed.

  21. This is time for us to realize what we almost forgot that is God. I believe that this is a wonder and signs of His 2nd coming. Tulad ng lagin kong sinsabi, hindi ito pananakot but this is a warning for us to be ready. ready na sa pagdting Nya e handa tyong lahat n sumama saKnya ng malinis. Let's all practice righteousness. follow the greatest commandment, Love God above all things and love people.
