Poll: Oprah Winfrey was Refused Service by a 'Racist' Shop Assistant in Switzerland. Store Owner Says it's Misunderstanding. Your Thoughts?

Source: www.dailymail.co.uk

She is one of the richest and most famous women on the planet.

So when Oprah Winfrey popped in to an upmarket boutique for a new designer handbag she was taken aback when the shop assistant refused to show her a bag.

She said the £24,460 crocodile skin item was ‘too expensive’.

Instead of making a scene, the billionaire TV magnate calmly left the Swiss store.

But she has now hit back at her treatment in a furious interview on US television, claiming she was a victim of ‘racism’.

Miss Winfrey, 59, said: ‘I was in Zurich the other day, in a store whose name I will not mention. I didn’t have my eyelashes on, but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear.

'I had my little Donna Karan skirt and my little sandals. But obviously The Oprah Winfrey Show is not shown in Zurich.

‘I go into a store and I say to the woman ‘‘Excuse me, could I see the bag right above your head?” and she says to me “No. It’s too expensive.”’ Miss Winfrey asked a second time to see the bag, which was locked in a cabinet to deter shoplifters.

But oblivious to her fame and fortune, the shop assistant allegedly replied: ‘No, no, you don’t want to see that one, you want to see this one because that one will cost too much. You will not be able to afford that.’

It may have been beyond the salaries of ordinary mortals, but £24,460 is small change to a celebrity worth about £1.8billion.

Miss Winfrey added: ‘I could have had the big blow-up thing and thrown down the black card and all that stuff.

Controversy: The bag in question was a Jennifer bag in crocodile skin. Tom Ford designed the handbag for the actress, pictured with it left, and now makes it in a number of different finishes, right

Turned away: The assistant serving Oprah Winfrey in the boutique owned by Trudie Goetz (pictured) told Oprah: 'You will not be able to afford that' when she asked to see a hanbag

‘But why do that? But it [racism] still exists, of course it does.’

‘I left the store but it proves that racism is still an issue,’ she added.

Referring to a famous movie scene in which Richard Gere tells a snobbish boutique salesman that he wants to spend an obscene amount of money she added: ‘I wanted to create a Pretty Woman moment and come back and buy everything and say ‘‘Big mistake!’’. But then I thought she’d get a commission, so let’s not do that,’ she added

Miss Winfrey was in Zurich for the wedding of her friend Tina Turner to Erwin Bach last month. She was staying in the five-star Dolder Grand Hotel at the time.

The incident happened in a branch of the chic Trois Pommes chain of boutiques. Ironically, its owner Trudie Goetz was also a guest at Miss Turner’s nuptials.

Miss Goetz apologised for the incident, blaming it on a ‘misunderstanding’.

‘Everyone wants to sell a crocodile bag,’ Ms Goetz said. ‘It’s a misunderstanding. She insisted her saleswomen put customers first and try to be ‘kind’.

However, Zurich trade president Markus Hunig condemned the snub saying: ‘It’s totally unacceptable. I’ve never heard of anything like it.’

Swiss tourism spokesman Daniela Bar added: ‘We are totally ashamed about what happened. This sales assistant was completely in the wrong.

'We apologise on behalf of Swiss tourism for what happened.

‘This was a one-off and will not have a long lasting effect on the popularity of Switzerland, but the saleswoman should apologise to Oprah Winfrey.’

It’s not the first time that Miss Winfrey has had a run in with a high-end boutique.

In 2005 Hermes apologised to her after she was turned away from their Paris store because it was hosting a private function.

Miss Winfrey’s allegations come as Swiss authorities were criticised for introducing ‘apartheid’ style plans to ban asylum seekers from public places such as swimming pools, playing fields and libraries.

Switzerland has 48,000 asylum seekers or one for every 332 inhabitants, which is double the European average.

Offense: A 'racist' shop assistant at Trois Pommes refused to show Oprah Winfrey a bag because it was 'too expensive' and she should look at the cheaper merchandise, the star claimed during a TV interview

A CONTROVERSIAL ACCESSORY

Even if Oprah Winfrey had been allowed to look at the handbag, she may have thought twice before buying it.

The £24,460 bag was reportedly a crocodile-skin version of one of Jennifer Aniston’s favourite designs.

The Tom Ford Jennifer Bag, named after the 44-year-old former Friends star, is often seen on the arm of fashion-conscious celebrities.

But as Miss Winfrey is a strident opponent of animal fur clothing and was named 2008 Person of The Year by animal rights group PETA, she may have felt crocodile skin was a step too far.

The TV host has occasionally worn leather belts and scarves, but crocodile skin is seen by some campaigners as being particularly cruel, given the poor treatment exotic species are often subjected to by farmers.

A spokesman for Tom Ford could not be contacted to confirm if the handbag was made of real or imitation crocodile skin.

Naintindihan mo ba yung article?! or did u even get what the lesson oprah wants us to learn?! the fact that she is a customer and been told that the item is expensive for her to even check is not only racism but also not a good customer service. any customer regardless of how they look like should be given with utmost respect.

also review and check your history books why their race is sensitive when it comes to these types of issues. then you will fully understand the reason instead of saying "pampam" sila.

If Oprah was pleased with the service, she could have given good reviews for the shop. That would boost the shop's image without spending a dime. Obviously the sales staff spoke English well enough to say "No, no, you don’t want to see that one, you want to see this one because that one will cost too much. You will NOT be ABLE to AFFORD that" So asan ang misunderstanding diyan??? Sabi pa ni Oprah, naka Donna Karran outfit pa siya, and looks as she does when she's in her show.

    14. Hello, all! You think that high-end store would hire someone who barely speaks a simple 'conversational English'? come on. Oprah doesn't need to do 'pa-pampam. If she wants do such thing, then I guess she'd roam around with bodyguards to impose she's VIP. Racism exists. It still exists.

Bad customer service.

This landlord was quick to snub me, until I filled out an application and she saw how much I was making and it was 360 turn around. Tsk tsk. I used to work at a bank and it's funny how there's too many socialites with their branded apparel and they're the ones with no money in the bank while the people who you don't expect were the rich ones. It's usually the people who are either newly rich or not rich at all who feel the need to flaunt. Either you got it or you don't, not a big deal.

    1. I think real estate agents na nagma-manning ng stalls nila in malls are really trained na mangilatis ng potential clients based on how they look or how they dress.

  18. Racism. Oprah clearly understood what the lady said - it's too expensive for you. "For you"? What was that for, and how could the sales staff say that? By her looks? It's no excuse either that she was an Italian and that there was "miscommunication". She speaks enough English to tell Oprah that she couldn't afford the bag. Moreover, no saleslady in their right mind would say that, after customer asks twice - she must show what was on display. Plus, it's a high-end store. Are poor people really, honestly, still get in there asking to see an item inside a locked cabinet twice, if they are not somebody having money to blow? They may look around but will not really ask to see and inspect a top of the line item.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes! Walang miscommunication dun. Walang misunderstanding. Kung anong sinabi nung saleslady, AS IS yun.

    2. Thanks for speaking reasonably. I completely believe it was racism and find it foolish that people including the store owner are making up excuses.
However, the Swiss treatment of the event demonstrates the different European treatment of such events as compared to them in the U.S. Here, people would have insisted that she fire the employee and issue a full apology.
Instead, you have the Swiss travel board saying "we regret, but don't apologize," and the store owner saying Oprah must have misunderstood the Italian shop worker's English. Ridiculous. But funny.
I do find the blowback concerning the cost and material of the bag an indicator of many Americans' lack of awareness about social class. The same people who buy the gossip rags and watch "reality TV" about celebrities turn a blind eye to the completely different world in which they live as compared to us "normal" paeans!

  19. yup...racism usually takes place in communities which lack diversity and are homogenuously white such as zurich . i used to live in a really snotty and waspy connecticut suburb, and when i tried to open a bank account at a local bank, they did a credit check on me which was totally unnecessary. and when they found out that i had an outstanding balance with a gym, they denied me i went to a chase bank in manhattan and i was right away given an account no questions asked. i later found out that doing a credit check is HIGHLY unusual.

i hate playing the race card but at times, it does not take a genius to figure it out.

    1. doing a credit check in the US is very usual. Napaka-credit-oriented ng US financial world. It's not HIGHLY unusual.

  36. A french friend of mine told me she's not very well-known in Europe. It's probably why the shop assistant didn't recognize her... still racist pa rin dating nila.

  37. The clerk could have asked another co-worker who is fluent in English to assist the customer if language was really the problem.

  38. The fact that she's working in Customer Service the store attendant should have been more pleasant. Irregardless of one's physical appearance we should never discriminate. If she thought that Oprah or whoever didn't have the money to purchase the bag, she should have extended the same courtesy as she would the Queen of England. She should have just kept her options to herself and showed Oprah the bag.

  40. I am currently working as a P.A of a russian socialite oligarch. Hindi yun nag sa shopping sa mall or store may catalogue na pinapadala sa akin to show it to her. And if ever she wanted to go shopping in Paris , London or Milan I usually call the shop para maisara yung store exclusively for her

  42. Racism is like homophobia. Supposed victims of racism are racists themselves. Gays crying foul because of homophobic remarks are likewise homophobic to other gays as well.

We cannot stop racism/homophobia unless we start with ourselves.

  43. ganyan din naman mga pinoy, ang trato depende sa kulay ng balat... bakit nga ba na bully si nancy binay noon? more on dahil maitim siya rather than sa inexperienced siya sa politics.....

  44. This is not the first time this happened to Oprah. There was another incident "daw" at Hermes in Paris before. I think OA lang tong si Oprah. I know for a fact that racism is still happening all over the world. She is not a saint either, isa rin syang racist. American Airlines refused to fly her because she wants an all black crew, from pilots to flight attendant. Now she uses Delta which gladly obliged her request. Sobrang hypocrite nya.

  45. It is still an issue not just in other countries but even here in the Philippines. Pag black ka, they'll call salot and all those stuffs. Bullying is already part of your life, they'll even look at you from head to toe if your buying an item na medyo expensive even if you have money. I am half black american but my real color is fair because of the genes of my mom and my dad is not that black naman. I had an experience before sa isang designer dito saamin na kilala sya, then I went there para sana magpa gawa ng gown then sinabi nya sakin "afford mo ba ang 5k para sa rent lang yon pag gown ko 10k simple lang yon." then I ask him if I can look at his designs yung mga nasa may rack tapos umalis sya then yung assistant nya sabi okay lang daw so tinignan ko then nung bumalik sya sabi nya "may permission ko ba na pwede mong tignan yan?" So I left nalang and looked for another designer, good thing yung designer na pinuntahan ko very accommodating.

  47. My tito experienced it as well nung euro trip nya. He's Asian in a "tourist" outfit. Meaning no fancy accessories or whatever. He went in a shop tapos while he was looking for something to buy he called din the SA to assist him tapos the SA replied " why? are you going to buy that?" so he went out and ended up buying to a store nearby. Then he entered again to that racist store with both hands full of paper bags from Armani.
