The Duke of Edinburgh told this Filipino nurse at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital her country must be 'half empty', because so many of her compatriots have come to the UK to work for the NHS. Are there any of you left? The 91-year-old joked with the Filipino nurse and her colleagues during a visit to Luton and Dunstable Hospital to open a new cardiac centre earlier today.

ReplyDeleteI'm a nurse and I don't find it offensive. It's the truth. Kung binibigyan pagpapahalaga lang ang mga nurses dito sa bansa natin, bakit pa kami aalis di ba? We are just being practical. Ang sweldo ng isang nurse dito sa Pilipinas ay hindi makakabuhay ng pamilya. So we have no choice but to go to other countries. Mahirap na nga ang trabaho mo, hindi ka pa well-compensated. Tapos ang mga ibang tao na kapwa mo pa Pilipino mababa ang tingin sayo, like CV. It's the sad truth for all of us nurses.
ReplyDeleteTama. Its a very noble profession na parang tinatapon lng ng gobyerno natin. bakit sa labas ng bansa ang taas ng sweldo pero dito satin ng co-call center yung mga. nurses natin kasi wala pang 10k ung sweldo.

ReplyDeleteIt's an indirect insult to the Philippine government which cannot provide stable jobs and reasonable income to our nurses and other OFWs. The remark, while meant to be a joke, is half true. I hope the government should do something about this or we could soon be the butt of jokes, not just of UK but around the world, for having a half-empty country. While I am proud of the world-class talent and skills of our kababayans, shouldn't this be utilized and acknowledged first in our own country? Nakakalungkot lang.

ReplyDeleteI think most of our FP followers misinterpreted his quote or joke (to many). I have this thought that the duke only meant it as a compliment to the Filipino nurses. I think all our nurses are qualified to work in their communities all over UK. Considering the crisis the country have been experiencing since terrorism was lifted in some key cities in they land, they still persisted to hire our Pinoy nurses despite the high standards they have set after.

I have this Brit engineer friend na masyadong close sa mga pinoy. ang sabi nya, nuong panahong nagstart mag-outsource ang UK ng mga nurses. Ang unang naging criteria nila ay yung may training na if not equally the same mas maganda pa sa trianing nila. There were 2 countries na naging outstanding dito--India at Philippines. Maging raw ang training natin at ang ating dedication to look after sa mga pasyente. Naging BONUS na lang raw ang pagsasalita natin ng English. Same view ito with India. Pero ang naging passing mark talaga natin eh ang ating training skills na masyadong minaliit ni Villar.

What's offensive about that? it wasn't a slur about her ethnicity or anything... We have to admit that we send a lot of them all over the world and in Britain where the population is not that big, if you've seen 1 too many of a specific nationality, you would probably get overwhelmed as well and perhaps think of the same thing.

Sa #2 hindi mo rin masisi dahil walang kwenta ang pagtrato sa bansa sa mga nurse. Maraming mga Cynthia Villar dito na nila-lang ang mga nurse. Sa 1st world kasi malaking kawalan pag umaalis at napa-pirate ang mga professionals nila na may hawak ng degree.

ReplyDeleteI find it funny and cute. And totoo naman di ba? Ironically, our public hospitals are understaffed kahit na ang dami nating nursing graduates. Some nursing graduates choose to work in call centres kasi naman sobrang baba ang pay nila tapos overworked pa. Our nurses are unappreciated kaya mas gusto nila mag-work abroad, the government should do something about this!
