Poll: Prince Philip's Joke Offensive or Not?

The Duke of Edinburgh told this Filipino nurse at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital her country must be 'half empty', because so many of her compatriots have come to the UK to work for the NHS. Are there any of you left? The 91-year-old joked with the Filipino nurse and her colleagues during a visit to Luton and Dunstable Hospital to open a new cardiac centre earlier today.

    1. I could not agree more. Although, it sounds a little sarcastic (like oh so you're all here and you're taking all these jobs from the English people or something like that).

    2. Iba lang ang humor ng mga Briton. But I'm sure The prince was trying to make a funny comment baka kasi majority of the staff there are Filipinos

  3. not offensive at all...totoo naman kasing halos lahat ng nurse eh nag aabroad! kung malaki ba naman sweldo nila dito eh di konti lang sana sila nag aabroad...for a 3rd world country like us, wag na tayong masayadong ma pride!

  4. What he said was true, and should be a wake up call to a our government. Tsk

  7. It's a plain joke. There's nothing offensive for me.

  8. NOthing offensive, at least it shows that our nurses' presence is really felt abroad.

And it's the truth naman so no need to be offended.

  14. Not offensive.

  15. Not offensive in fact it's a compliment because he knows they have to "import" from our country instead of using their own human resource! I hope nobody's offended, i was actually proud he said that!

  16. i think it's only us Filipinos who think sending people overseas to work is a blessing. for other countries this kind of situation is a big problem because the talented and smart people that should be investing their skills in their own country are now being exploited by other countries for their own gain while their homeland are left with the leftovers.

  18. Asus kung may magsasabi pa dyan na it's racist, I'm sure mga balat sibuyas yan! It's just a joke. Although Philip's record for saying racism-laced comments is a given.

  19. Not at all! Its a joke.

  20. Nothing to be offended about. Goes to show marami talagang nurses there, and pretty much all over the rest of the world.

I'd be more offended if he told me about getting "slitty eyes" if I stayed too long in China, like what he said to British exchange students there years ago! O___O

  22. It was not offensive. It may probably not count as a joke. It was a wake up call & a slap to the face of our government. We're losing our nurses & a good chunk of our own health system workforce. And to think that a certain senatorial candidate thinks that nurses don't need quality education to be great nurses overseas recognized by Prince Philip & awarded by Pres. Barack Obama... Gosh. It's either the borgeousie's ignorance or ploy to keep themselves in their pedestal. #StillFumingAtACertainSenatorialCandidate

      Delete

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm a nurse and I don't find it offensive. It's the truth. We are just being practical. So we have no choice but to go to other countries. It's the sad truth for all of us nurses.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Tama. Its a very noble profession na parang tinatapon lng ng gobyerno natin. bakit sa labas ng bansa ang taas ng sweldo pero dito satin ng co-call center yung mga. nurses natin kasi wala pang 10k ung sweldo.

  25. I don't find it offensive.

  26. To my sensitive countrymen: as the truth hurts it also sets you free! Let's move on and look forward!

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's an indirect insult to the Philippine government which cannot provide stable jobs and reasonable income to our nurses and other OFWs. The remark, while meant to be a joke, is half true. I hope the government should do something about this or we could soon be the butt of jokes, not just of UK but around the world, for having a half-empty country. While I am proud of the world-class talent and skills of our kababayans, shouldn't this be utilized and acknowledged first in our own country?

  34. I think most of our FP followers misinterpreted his quote or joke (to many). I have this thought that the duke only meant it as a compliment to the Filipino nurses. I think all our nurses are qualified to work in their communities all over UK. Considering the crisis the country have been experiencing since terrorism was lifted in some key cities in they land, they still persisted to hire our Pinoy nurses despite the high standards they have set after.

Afterall, they are truly cared for by our compassionate Filipino nurses.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yung sinabi ni Cynthia Villar ang offensive

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yung sinabi ni Villar ang offensive. I was in the UK last month particularly sa London. I have this Brit engineer friend na masyadong close sa mga pinoy. ang sabi nya, nuong panahong nagstart mag-outsource ang UK ng mga nurses. Ang unang naging criteria nila ay yung may training na if not equally the same mas maganda pa sa trianing nila. There were 2 countries na naging outstanding dito--India at Philippines. Same view ito with India.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I will take it as a compliment. The fact that the duke acknowledged filipino nurses working in the UK not just one but many of them is uplifting. Nothing offensive. Just just a sake of building rapport. Mabuhay ang mga Filipino nurses.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Totoo naman eh.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think its not offensive... Just plain bad humor

    ReplyDelete
Medyo old fashioned ang humor ni lolo at kuminsan kailangan niyang itago ang pagka racist niya, pero in this case parang walang kaso naman.

    ReplyDelete
  41. not offensive at all.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What's offensive about that? it wasn't a slur about her ethnicity or anything... We have to admit that we send a lot of them all over the world and in Britain where the population is not that big, if you've seen 1 too many of a specific nationality, you would probably get overwhelmed as well and perhaps think of the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Dude, its funny ha. Buti nga kilala tayo nung Duke at knows niya ang Filipinos.

    ReplyDelete
Yes it's stating the obvious and might be a joke for him, but it's definitely NOT offensive.

  46. Nothing offensive about it really....

    ReplyDelete
  47. not offensive at all mga filipino nurses ay pinupuri sa ibang bansa as one of the best ang offensive ay ang comment ni c villar tungkol sa mga filipino nurses sya pa ang naglait sa kapwa nya pilipino

    ReplyDelete
  48. Totoo naman. Have a sense of humour.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  50. Medyo semplang ata ang analysis mo. Anyway. Goodluck.

    ReplyDelete
  51. hehehe! at least prince philip is not maligned with the thought of how big or small the role of Filipino nurses in their society.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Subtle tirade? Okay ka lang!? It was a joke. Get a life.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  54. oh man, etiquette and manners are part of their daily life, how can that joke be offensive? that is even something to be proud of, that just means England needs the Filipinos and they trust us

    ReplyDelete
  55. hindi naman offensive.

    ReplyDelete
  56. There are two sides of taking it.

    1. You can be proud that the prince knows that there are a lot of Filipino nurses worth hiring.

    2. You can be ashamed that these 'compatriots' chose to leave the country for the $s/Pounds and leave the Philippines one less of a professional.

    ReplyDelete
  57. What i want to know is Cynthia Villar's opinion on this.. Hehe

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  59. the duke is known to be a joker... and he doesn't mean anything bad about what he said... in fact it was half truth! lol

    ReplyDelete
  60. Of course prince Philip , plenty of them are still here and unemployed ....would you like to hire them all? I'm sure Philippine government will be very happy. He he he!

    ReplyDelete

  64. Why take offense when it's the truth? Sadly we have brain drain in the country and not only in our healthcare sector.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I find it funny and cute. And totoo naman di ba? Ironically, our public hospitals are understaffed kahit na ang dami nating nursing graduates. Some nursing graduates choose to work in call centres kasi naman sobrang baba ang pay nila tapos overworked pa. Our nurses are unappreciated kaya mas gusto nila mag-work abroad, the government should do something about this!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hindi kaya understaffed ang mga hospitals.. sobrang dami lang mga nurses.. ewan ko ba ba't lahat na lang gusto mag nurse. akala siguro abroad agad ang kalalabasan.. that is why underpaid mga nurses.. law of supply & demand & prices.. ang dami kase ng supply.. the gov't should do something about this..

      Delete

  66. it was just a joke. that's it. wag gawing major issue. ang issue ay yung sinabi ni Cynthia Villar about nurses. Now think about it, iboboto nyp ba siya? kalowkah!
