Letter from a Reader: Mrs. Cynthia Villar Disrespected the Nursing Profession

Mrs. Cynthia Villar,

We, nurses, are so disappointed by what you have said about our profession. That we don't deserve quality education, that we don't need to finish BSN, that we are "room" nurses and that we don't need to be good at what we do?

Shame! You didn't just disrespect us and our profession but you also disrespected our parents who worked very hard just to put us through nursing school. It is so sad to know that even our own "kababayan" degraded our profession that is known to be noble. Reality check MRS. CYNTHIA VILLAR, please count all the unregistered and registered nurses in the Philippines and overseas. Do you think you will win the Senate race?

if you are sinless then go and do your stuff, but if you are not, then think again.

i bet after her winning the election she would surely say "oh nurses thank you so much for making me number 1"

  4. I am ashamed to hear your comments about Philippine nurses, I have worked with many of them here and I respect them just as much as the north American nursing graduates for they have the courage to endure many things that they see in a daily basis.Nurses are very versatile just so you know, I just wish you educate yourself about the nursing profession first before you spoke as you sound very ignorant for a politician.

  5. She is a backward and ignorant old woman. BSN is the very basic standard for all nurses all over the world. Only BSN can train for specialties such as intensive care, emergency care, IV and operating room care. She doesn't deserve a chance to be a senator. Stop political dynasty.

Since we live in a country where diplomas are more relevant than intelligence and/or skills when looking for jobs, syempre nakaka-offend sa mga nurses.

    6. Ms Jewel Degraeve, I hate to say it, but you're like Mrs. Villar right now, speaking of something which you have no extensive knowledge about. You generalize all Filipino nursing schools as such when you didn't even study here. Research first before you comment. If you had researched beforehand, you would know that many Filipino nurses who graduated from the Philippines are leaders in their own fields and places; you would know that alcohol is NOT the gold standard in disinfecting objects and it can be used in cleaning your hands provided that there is no visible dirt (based on guidelines); you would know that there are Filipino nursing schools where students start their hospital and community exposures in the first and second years; you would know that Filipino nurses, because of their knowledge and values are in demand in many areas of the world; you would know that not all schools require their students to pay to have their intensive training; and you would know that there are no such words as efficacity and garanty. You are entitled to your own opinion, but please, back it up with substantial information and not just hearsay to make your argument legitimate.

    1. yes jewel, yun nga ang point e, kung low quality na nga ang education ng nursing dito sa philippines, diba the more na kailangan ituwid at tulungan ng mga public servant kung pano maiaayos ang quality na yun. pag nakita mo ba na considered "nobody" ang mga nurses sa ibang country, ito-tolerate mo ba lalo yun? of course not, that's why we have to resolve and do something about the issue. sa pananaw ni aling cynthia, parang sinabi nya na na pabayaan na lang na low quality ang standard ng nursing education dito sa philippines kse "room nurse" lang naman ang kinababagsakan nila sa ibang countries...shame on her!

    2. not all filipino nurses abroad, especially US, are downgraded. marami sa kanila ay nrerspeto din. one of them is menchu sanchez, pinay nurse who was hailed by pres. obama in his state of the union address. she led the rescue of hospitalized infants in NY during superstorm sandy.

Huwag magmagaling dahil obviously wala kang alam. Alam mo ba na kaya nakakapag licensure examination sa ibang bansa ang mga graduates sa pilipinas is because ang curriculum sa Pilipinas is comparable or even more say for example sa US and Europe?!

  11. hi fashion pulis,
    I'm half belgian, half filipino.
    i'm a nursing student.
i'm at my last year of college.
i just want to tell you how it goes here in belgium. first of all dito 3 years lang ang nursing. it has 2 sorts. 1. graduat means after 3 years you can take specialisation like pediatry, geriatry, OR, ICU, palliative etc,... you get much higher sallary and you can be the a cheif nurse in the future, then, the second one is brevet means you have the status of being a nurse, only a nurse working in the hospitals, home for the aged and house to house.
dito first year college pa lang ay nag OOJT na, 3 months OJT. why? to know if you are really into this job. then second year 4 months of ojt, third year 6 months ojt.
students doesn't need to pay the hospital to be allowed to practice thier future profession. and here, we do toilettes for our patients,in short kami ang nagpapaligo sa patient. why? kasi we need the global observation, di gaya sa pinas meron caregiver to do that. and also, alcohol is a no no for hands's disinfection? why? it has only 70% efficacity, and you can't use it in an open wound. we use it para sa materials. basta marami ang kulang sa education sa pinas (nursing schools).
and bawal kaming pumasok sa trabaho ng nakauniform na at lumabas ng hospital with the uniform. number one source of contamination yon.
and don't do this job just for the money or for the salary. if you are a nursing student forget europe, if balak mag apply because the diploma in the philippines are never been valid here. i'm sorry :(

We don't start our OJTs til 3rd yr because we don't go on site being dumb on how to do our vital signs and our professors and CI's make sure that we understand every bit of the nursing and medical terms. I am a registered nurse in UK and only needed 3 months adaptation to get my license obviously we need this because it is a different country. Try to go to Phil and you won't be able to practice either without a Phil license. For example sa USA kailangan nilang ipasa NCLEX, local board, English requirement at iba pa. Most theories are the same when it comes to nursing.

Kunwari iba lang last name.

    2. Maraming jobless because the standard has decreased. It's not because of the "uso" thingy. Now, it is CVillar's fault also for siding with the school business investors and allowing them to enroll many students despite the low quality of education. She was just thinking of money and not the future of the students.

Huwag magmagaling dahil obviously wala kang alam. Alam mo ba na kaya nakakapag licensure examination sa ibang bansa ang mga graduates sa pilipinas is because ang curriculum sa Pilipinas is comparable or even more say for example sa US and Europe?!

  34. For the position that she took in the past should have allowed her to be forward thinker, instead she degraded the quality of education that nurses require in order to remain dignified and be respected all over the world. Cynthia Villar is running for a senate, why should the people of the Philippines give someone like her another chance to disgrace the integrity of hard working Filipinos around the world. It should stop now, if she thinks she can just run for this position, just because she thinks she can and she has the capability? Well she's just not the kind that Filipinos need to be one of the leaders and be a prime example to the world. If the president is endorsing her, well it is a mistake. She might just be the biggest liability with this administration.

I am not a nurse but I am really disappointed to Mrs. Villar statement... not to mention how she care about the universities who according to her spent a lot of money to procure equipments for Nursing Course, she didn't think that she is running as a public servant whose priority must be the citizen of the phils not the businessmen..... well, I am not surprised she is one of them before she enter to politics... I am not the type who comment in every issue I heard but what she says is so despicable to say... no excuses or alibi will clear her since her statement is crystal clear and the core of her belief... 3. I'm a registered nurse, and in behalf of the thousands of nurses in the Philippines and all over the world humihingi ako ng pasensiya kung sa palagay mo'y hindi natutukan ang anak mong may sakit. Saang ospital at ano bang naging sakit ng anak mo? FYI, in most hospitals here in the Philippines the nurse-patient ratio in a ward is 1 nurse to 10-60 patients, in private rooms 1 nurse to at least 3 patients depende pa rin sa ospital at sa number of patients admitted. We admit patients, carry out doctors' orders, prepare and give medications, prepare patients for their procedures (i.e. surgery, radiology/lab work-ups), actually do procedures (think catheters, enemas, blood extraction and transfusion to name a few), take vital signs, and communicate with other healthcare department regarding the patient's needs (scheduling/reserving the OR and labs, order and pick-up meds at the pharmacy, etc). Some patients actually need more monitoring than others, depending on the patient's diagnosis and the doctor's order. All those and more in a 8-hr shift when we can't even indulge our lunch and more often miss or shorten our lunch break just so we can do and finish all tasks at hand. So you don't appreciate or like nurses and doctors (mayayabang ba kamo?), then don't be a hypocrite and go to a hospital when you or anyone in your family is sick.

AS IN PO, NAKAKAHIYA NAMAN SAYO NO?

  45. actually ok na yung unang part na sagot nya e. true naman na yung CHED and nag bibigay ng permit to operate a school. syempre nga naman people have invested their money and all. i got it. pero syempre along the process you just dont put up a school but make sure the quality of the eductaion is highly considered. ilang beses na ba natin sinasabi na education is very important. yung 2nd part ng sagot nya semplang ng major major. for someone who is in a public office and running for a higher post, such comment is unacceptable. i am sure she has done wonderful things in her life helping other people. but her ignorance questions her character. i have no idea kung na tensed lang sya or what. it only shows she cant cope under pressure...kaya kung ano ano na lang nasasabi nya. di naman pabilisan ng sagot ang labanan, yung when you speak from your heart and what you know well. sa UK nga ang mga pinoy have even higher education from most of them. kase degree holder and pinoy, sila e diploma lang. recently lang sila nag kakaroon ng degree. yung iba nga working na they are still studying to complete their degree. there is no such thing as room nurse alam nating mga nurses yan. but the one that really gets me is when she said "sa america and other countries e ano lang sila, yung parang nag aalaga (clearly she doesnt know what she was saying) Hindi naman sila kailangan ganun kagaling (kahit vocational course nga you are expected to excell and be your best...maging nurse pa kaya). Cynthia Villar you are a complete moron and an ignorant sod!!!!
if you however are referring for a caregiver...di pa rin pasado sagot mo....like you as a plotician, everything you should do should not only be good but great...kaya naman pala may mga bulok na politician kase yan ang tingin nila...di ka naman dapat ganun kagaling...just like you Cynthia Villar...mayaman ka nga at matulungin pero di ka naman ganun kagaling!!!...what can you offer on the senate? surely a mediocre job like how you perceieved us NURSES...but we are not mediocre...we are great people who not only value life but saves life...and to become one...YOU NEED TO BE F&*^% AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

    2. malaman tong comment na to! #FTW at may sense.

I was admitted in one of the private hospitals sa ortigas area, i have to say na private ung room ko, but the way the nurses did their job, commendable talaga. they know what they're doing.

Most of my aunts are nurses. So i know how tough it is just to make it through the third year (ung may capping ceremony ba yun, tama?). kung hindi ka pa makapasa, wala ng chance magproceed (yun ang progression sa school na yun, which maybe different from other schools). unless transfer ka ng school. at yung mga books, karamihan published sa US. Filipinos are known to be professionally competitive. kaya kailangan natin ng strict compliance sa standards na required ng bawat kurso. kasi pag nagkamali ang isa, nadadamay ang iba. kailangan calibrated yan, kahit saan school ka nag-graduate.

napanood ko un video. it looked like CV doesn't have any idea kung anong klaseng sacrifices ginagawa ng mga nurses para lang magawa nila ang kanilang trabaho.

it's just that, yung ibang institutions kasi, pera lang ang inisip. we have to admit na may ganung scenario sa bansa natin. at nagiging talamak pa dahil sa ibang politicians na corrupt.

  46. I saw the interview and clearly she doesn't know what she's talking about.

With all due respect Ma'am, if you dont know nothing about the profession better shut up na lang.

A nurse is a nurse and a doctor is a doctor.

Nurses spend more time and know more about our patients than doctors do, doctors merely know the patient's illness, diagnosis and meds to give the patients which are often based on the diagnostic tests done and the nurses' observations. 8 semesters and 2 summer intensification rounds are not enough to be a competent nurse. Registered nurses need high-quality education and training. If you are confident that a nurse who graduated with a 2-yr nursing course can be just as qualified as a nurse with a 4 year Bachelor's Degree, then it's your call. Our competence and proper training make us confident with high regards to our profession, which we deserve. Respect begets respect!

I admit some might be a bit nice but just like you, they're also people so you also need to understand them. Just like doctors, police or engineers they have a big role in the society and because of that I salute them for their sincerity in fulfilling their duties as a very competitive and heartful nurse.

  52. She disgusts me. First of all, our nurses bust their asses off for a measly salary. My brother is a nurse. They don't mind it kasi they know that once my brother graduates and becomes a nurse (which he is now), he will be able to help people, and probably even save some lives. For Villar to say such insensitive and incredibly stupid statement as that, hindi na ko magtataka if one day she gets sick tapos pabayaan sya ng room nurse nya. I sure hope she doesn't win.
