Letter from a Reader: Cosmo Bash 2012 Screw Up

Dear Fashion PULIS,

I guess everyone knows about the fiasco that happened at the Cosmo Bash 2012 on the night of Sept 18, 2012. At 9:15 to 9:30pm, even before the show started, the World Trade Center management did not allow people to enter the venue anymore even if they had tickets, regardless whether they were regular tickets or VIP tickets. The venue was already jam-packed with spectators, both Cosmo girls and beckys alike.

But I got to talk to some Summit Media employees who practically divulged that the fiasco was more than just about venue over-capacity (I can't believe Summit Media/Publishing hire people like them).

When I asked the person who's wearing a Cosmo Bash ID why they issued more tickets than the actual capacity of the venue, she couldn't answer me. I was told that she was not the right person to ask so she told me to look for anyone in "black" and pointed a group near the hall entrance. Written on the girl's ID was Summit Media's Trade Marketing Arm.

When I approached the group in black, I asked them if they were the right people to talk to regarding my concern. It was a guy from Summit Media Advertising this who asked my concern and I told him the same story, that it was a mistake on Summit's part to issue more tickets than the actual capacity of the venue. Safety-wise, it is a big no-no in events planning. Instead of apologizing for the mishap, he blamed the World Trade Center management for being strict. He was not even apologetic on behalf of Cosmo or Summit that they did not foresee such a problem. He was blaming the venue management for everything and not the Events group who over-issued tickets, that caused it all. The Advertising guy was defensive, but still, no apologies.

I asked the same guy if he knows that some of the people who were still outside, with tickets - were magazine subscribers, actual customers, who wanted to see the show. But he completely dismissed them and said that not everyone outside were subscribers. He arrogantly said that he DID NOT care who the people queuing outside were. When he couldn't answer me anymore, he told me that he was the wrong person to talk to since he was from Advertising and not from the Events team, even after 10 or more minutes of talking.

I gave up on my over-issuing of tickets concern, I understood that the WTC management was not letting people in for the audience's own good. But it was a red flag when the Advertising guy told me that he didn't care whether the people outside were subscribers or customers. Didn't he know that the subscribers are major lifelines of his employer? Worse, I found out from another Summit Media employee that even advertisers were locked out of the event.

I also learned that Cosmo issued 5000 tickets when the capacity of the WTC is only 3000pax. One intern from Trade Marketing informed me that some of the "VIPs" brought entourages who were not ticket holders or Summit Media employees, but were allowed to enter still - the very reason why many subscribers, advertisers and guests WITH TICKETS were not able to enter.

I was lucky enough to enter the bash, but despite so, I was concerned with how Summit Media and the Cosmo Team handled the dilemma. There was no room to move inside the hall and when I got out of the hall, I saw the crowd of people with tickets that were not able to go in, that is when I started to ask the people with IDs about the logistical nightmare they just created for their subscribers, advertisers and guests. I was so dismayed, I did not re-enter the bash anymore, I just went home, frustrated.

I'm writing this to you because I just think that Summit Media and the Cosmo Team did not align properly, creating havoc at the expense of their subscribers and advertisers who got the shorter end of the stick. I was able to attend the last two FHM Top 100 event and it was far different from what happened yesterday. I will not even start bashing people who were lucky enough to enter the hall, because some of them, were just too "chaka," I'm sorry for the term. (To illustrate, and do allow me to speak in Filipino, maraming mukhang parloristang may makapal na kolorete sa mukha, may beer belly pero naka plunging neckline at pekpek shorts parin at naka-bakya. Yung tipong mambabalya ng sino man para lang makalapit sa lalaki - yes, there's a difference between parlor and salon, I know you get my point here, haha), one would know they went there for the topless models, and not because they are avid Cosmo readers.

As a "Cosmo girl" myself, I just felt bad on how they destroyed their credibility to their subscribers and advertisers - their main stakeholders - by reacting the way they did that night and how everyone I approached washed their hands to avoid the blame.

Kudos though to the WTC security for being strict with their policies.

I'm sorry for the long narration, but the bash was that bad. I'm still so disappointed and affected until now. I left the bash at 10:30pm, wasted my time talking to the "right people."

Yours truly,
Sam Go

    1. apology? issuing 5000 tickets for a 3000 capacity?!! Tapos ngayon apology? Mag refund na lang sila. Yan ay kung may interesado pa.

    2. Right! They saw it coming and still over-issued those tickets. And worse, ALLOWED ENTRY to those who did not have tickets at the expense of those who were legit ticket holders who lined up for hours and yet were denied entry! That was INJUSTICE in any language!

    3. I don't think those tickets were for sale. they were given away.

  4. Uhm, okay.. And of course, the beckies (well most of the people there, actually, kahit hindi becky) were there for the topless men, duh!

    1. Korek! Saying she wouldn't even START bashing the 'chaka' beckies and yet dedcated 5 lines of the paragraph to exactly bash them. Ironic much. Smells like hypocrisy right there. Also, stating that she attended the event because she's a cosmo girl just makes me barf. Height of hypocrisy! Just like the chaka beckies she looks down on, im sure the letter reader was there to salivate over guy meat.
Haynako cosmo reader, u almost got my sympathy and all but hey, did u really have to ostracize the parlor beckies? In the end u just sounded like a spoiled whiny b*tch.

    2. You don't get. She paid for her tickets, and is a Cosmo subscriber. Were those chaka gays long-time magazine subscribers, or are regular readers of Cosmo? Do they buy the products advertised in Cosmo? Isn't this bash precisely held for their readers and advertisers?

And really, are you 100% certain that Sam Go and/or the others are indeed "avid subscribers" or not? Bottomline, they were all able to secure tickets so that makes them equal.

  5. I was one of the forunate ones to be able to enter. However i think thisis the last time i will attend the event. The event management is getting worse. People with VIP tickets were crowding the entrance like hell. No queuing and no one was there to ask the people to fix the lines. I felt baka ma-wowawee ang mga tao even in the VIP lines. The last 2 years was much better. And the event itself, BORING! Pacing was too , peoeple were getting bored. Tsk tsk poor handling.

  6. Dear "Cosmo girl",

First of all, sure, it's not the end of world. Sure, there were mistakes on Summit's part but it's a free event. What did you expect?

And for someone who claims she doesn't want to bash anyone, the lines below show that you are a mean judgmental and superficial bitch.

(To illustrate, and do allow me to speak in Filipino, maraming mukhang parloristang may makapal na kolorete sa mukha, may beer belly pero naka plunging neckline at pekpek shorts parin at naka-bakya. May RIGHT siyang mag bash kasi Mali talaga ung Event Organizers even if it was a FREE EVENT.
Lahat tayo dito may pagka judgemental. Wag kang bopis

    4. Dear MR. ANON 12:32 AM, she was just airing her concerns.

    5. But cosmo girl didnt need to go foul on her description of some of the people who came in. Bakit kailangan nyang laitin yung ibang tao. And how sure was she that these people do not buy cosmo mag? Just because mukha silang parlorista as she described them. The complaint against Summit was enough. No need to say mean things about other people.

  7. I sympathize with the reader , the letter is loses its credibility when it started to insult people and pointing about the difference of parlor and salon. My son owns a parlor here in US,he salon name is ..... beauty parlor which include all services offered in a salon and whi includes a $5000 medical grade autoclave sterilizing machine for all instruments used in his parlor that I am sure not many salons have. My son is not gay , he is a 23 year old college graduate astute enterpreneur that owns a parlor so if the one wants his complaints here, don't include insults.

Pwede ba, hindi naman nya sinabing LAHAT ng parlor eh chaka, she was merely alluding to the common image of parloristas here in the Philippines no (buti nga hindi pa nya ni-mention yung MABAHONG HININGA na common sa mga nagtatrabaho sa parlor).

    3. Grabe makalait ka, hindi mo kilala kung sino ang nag comment sa itaas, hindi lahat na nakatira sa US, magaling sa written English but they can converse well, they can be good in math or science but not literary and English composition. They can be a very well off and successful in their chosen career. Anyway, going back to letter, please read it again, the insinuation of this statement " mukha silang parlorista" and "yes, there is difference between parlor and salon" Hindi ba nilalahat niya na ang mga parlorista lang ang puwedeng maging uncivil?at nagbigay pa ng difference as if social ang taga salon at low class ang parlor? Rather then stealing, working in a parlor is a decent job, this is clearly an insult to all parlor workers and owners... so this is my point, if you want your complaints/ whining to be heard... do not include insults.

  11. @ 12:32 Free event or not, there must be rules to be followed. They issued tickets that were a lot more than the event's place capacity, which would have been disastrous and harmful to the people there if not for the WTC's strict security. And, I'm sure the writer is not the only person who feels this way towards Summit right now.

Just because they are so "chaka" as what you said oesn't make you any better and the fact that you mentioned it in this letter which I don't think relevant at all makes you sound like a not so nice person. 14. This is so similar to Penshoppe's Mario Maurer promo at Phil. Fashion Week last year wherein customers who purchased this much just to have a ticket as their pass are the one bumped off in favor of entourage of guest lists through event connections. They presented a collection to affluent people who are not their niche and definitely not buy these clothes and surely prefers the more high-end labels. And the real market were waiting in vain til the last hour for the opportunity of getting in.

  15. I was going to agree with "Cosmo Girl" until she started bashing what she termed as "parlorista". If these "parloristas" (your term) got in legitly then why would complain against them and start bashing/talking about them? I bet they had the sense to go to the venue early knowing that the lines would be long. Street smart sila! As for you, now, you just sound a bitter, whiny, elitist (or pa-elite), "pa-sosy" na hindi nakapasok sa venue. I guess I'm glad that you didn't get in then.

To quote again what you said:

    "maraming mukhang parloristang may makapal na kolorete sa mukha, may beer belly pero naka plunging neckline at pekpek shorts parin at naka-bakya. Yung tipong mambabalya ng sino man para lang makalapit sa lalaki - yes, there's a difference between parlor and salon, I know you get my point here, haha";

Sige, nakapasok siya, okay, fine. She was still wrong for talking badly about people who had nothing to do with her "sosy" problem. And,I will just blame her out-of-the-blue panglalait sa mga walang kinalaman for me not reading thoroughly her--what ended up in the end-- a non-important/whiny/feeling-entitled complaint letter.

  24. Cosmo girl, seems like you easily forget! You won't even start bashing? Oh well, you just went on a yapping spree dahling, you even wrote it in Filipino to give emphasis! You should've just focused on airing your concerns. Sure it was Cosmo/Summit's fault why a lot of "subscribers" and "advertisers" weren't able to enter because of their incompetency. Readers might understand if you will bash them to the bones but sure as hell you have no right to judge the lucky ones that made it inside the venue. They might not look and dress according to your standards but it doesn't mean that they can't afford subscription to a mag, it's not worth a fortune anyway. :)
The event was free, anyone could get a ticket. For sure the people outside are not all subscribers as they claim to be.
And based on your comment "one would know they went there for the topless models, and not because they are avid Cosmo readers", so are you claiming that you were there because you are an avid cosmo reader? Puhleaseee! Stop indulging in hypocrisy. Of course everybody, whether they had tickets or not went there to see men parading in kinky costumes unless they really had to be present because it was part of their job! It doesn't have to do with being an avid reader of a beauty and fashion magazine or not!

By the way, I'm not one of those "parloristas" just so you know.

baka di pa nila keri yung mga malalaking events, baka pang fhm meet and greet lang sila sa galleria. kidding aside, if there's any indication yung mga staff nila, assuming your story is true should be reprimanded. not only because maling mali ang pag handle nila ng crowd control, masisira pa yung branding ng cosmo philippines at summit in general sa mga pinagsasabi nila. lahat ng kilala ko kasi umalis na and in fairness to them ok naman yung lahat na naging event including cosmo bash. : ]

Which advertisers in their right minds would put advertising sa isang magazine without required circulation figures? Think before you type!

    1. While i agree with ur stand that being a "cosmo girl" isnt exactly life's greatest achievement, i beg to differ that this sam go is neither a homophobe nor a bigot. To even stratify homosexuals into parlor vs. salon types and making it appear as though the parlor variety are cheap, crass, perverted and and not even worthy of a free admission is just despicable. If that's not a homophobic bigot for u, i dunno what is.

if sam is a homophobe then she would have written that ALL gays are chaka not just the "parloristas" and bigotry is too extreme since bigoted people are set in their ways. i'm sure sam wouldn't think a "parlorista" as chaka if said "parlorista" dresses up nicely. sam's view is just of the "mean girls" variety...lol

  29. The main reason of this rant is about you not getting into a hot event. It bruises your ego that people who you think are beneath you were able to enjoy what should've been yours.
Frankly speaking, you were there for the very same reasons those parloristas with koloretes you mentioned were there, so don't go ranting and judging people in the same breath.
I don't think you'd be complaining if you were able to get in even if the place was packed like a can of sardines or had front row seats or given the red carpet treatment for being a subscriber. You are ranting because the parloristas got in and you didn't.

And just to make things clear, I do not work for Summit Media or whatever Event Group they hired. I am not a parlorista or a salonista, just an over-aged Cosmo woman who cannot take any form of hypocrisy.

Well, she doesn't seem homophobic to me and maybe she should have just kept her mouth shut on some people's appearance and kept it to herself instead of publishing it. may punto naman talaga si sam go, at di masasabing ampalaya lang siya kasi nakapasok naman siya, but what is the use kung dahil sa sobrang siksikan di na din maenjoy ang event dahil wall to wall tao. to those saying she should just move on, she can also speak her mind and air her complaint while moving on, diba. it's called closure. nag apologize nga summit pero nangyari na, kung hundreds ang di nakapasok due to overprinting of tickets then sam go's letter is just one among the hundreds of people who made time and spent gas going to the event only to encounter mayhem when they got there. free doesn't mean ok lang lahat. a well organized event shows you respect the people who support your business- be they advertisers, readers, subscribers.

If that's how your mind works, then that's what you should try to change. Stereotyping or generalizing is never good and you should not accept that just because you think that's normal for other people. Just think of what you'd feel if a foreigner tells you that because you'er Filipino, then you must like eating dogs? That's similar to what Sam Go just did---stereotyping, generalizing, and, eventually judging people just because of what they look like to her. And, also, no, I try not to judge any of FP's BI personalities. I try to read them with a grain of salt because one can never be too trusting of BIs. But it is just entertaining to read.

FOUNDATION DAY, KABUKI LEVELS lang talaga! Hahahahaha!

Ikaw pag nandun ka ba, would you take time to find out who's responsible for the mismanagement? I commend her for that. And let's move on with her being judgmental, hindi po iyon ang issue. There is truth to what she had written ... and to add to that, people have varying decorum, no matter what their appearance may be. It's not her problem if people couldn't handle this truth. Perhaps the good thing about this is knowing that the organizers do not discriminate against the "parloristas" kaya sila nakapasok sa venue. But their irresponsibility in giving out way more tickets than the venue's actual capacity is another matter.

Kaya nawindang cguro si SamGo coz she based her criteria s fashion output ng mag, while the "parloristang beckies" based it on the sexy event kaya naka pek-pek shorts, naka chakang muk-ap, etc. Pero we shouldnt forget that what she complained about was the poor PR handling and crowd control... Yung panlalait nya is no different from all others here na libreng mag express kahit mapanira...this is the perfect venue for bigoted rants. Kaya wag na mag malinis at moralista.. 47. MAYBE the organizers really wanted to create long lines. After all, what kind of event would it be if people didn't see that it had a huge crowd outside clamoring to get in? With that, the organizers can claim that the event was such a big hit-- comparable to BENCH's shows. They really wanted it packed to the point of it being a fire hazard.

I strongly disagree that most of the negative comments were from the parloristas who can just afford to rent in computer cafes with mere 15 bucks in their pockets. Some even said that we are just "nagmamalinis or nagbabait-baitan".

Don't overvalue yourself, just because we don't share the same opinion it doesn't mean that we can't afford what you got. How shallow could you be?

And no, we are not "nagmamalinis", it just so happen that we are not MATAPOBRE like you. It already came from you, there are already lots of balahuras around so we better not join 'em! I admit that I also insult people BUT just the ones who deserve it or did something bad to me. I don't just go somewhere, look at people and judge them based strictly on how they look. Admit it, the reason why it's so hard to uplift the way of living for some in there is because of people like you who are overly quick to judge others based on superficial impressions. If you see that you are prettier or you dress better than anyone then you will instantly think that your sh*t smells like rose. C'mon, your sh*t stinks too just like theirs. And stop saying that SAM GO is just pissed that's why she insulted those people. As far as I know no matter how pissed you are, nobody has the right to trash talk anyone that didn't do wrong to them. If that's your way of thinking then you're far worse than those bekis that according to you were inappropriately dressed for the event. Sam Go has every right to be pissed and trash talk those annoying event staff, that's understandable but to stereotype those bekis there? Even if we are reading these bi's here every now and then it doesn't mean that we should lose our manners, should we? Just so you know some are here for entertainment and not to act like a balahura.

    1. I get it, i get your point, but you're making a mountain out of a molehill girl/dude. You can't control what other people think, it's their opinion. Sure I AGREE that Sam Go should have just said nothing about the people's appearance but hey it's already there. Let's focus on the real issue here and not crucify Sam Go because she's not as good as you Or rather she insulted people she didn't know, unlike you who also insulted others but ONLY those who were bad to you. I say let the one without sin be the first to throw a stone.

I also read FPs bi and read all the nasty comments others made, but i don't react negatively to what they say. It's their opinion no matter how crass they are. What's the difference with those commenters who leave nasty and insulting comments in the other BIs to what Sam Go did? (Re:chaka Parloristas and whatnots) I don't let it get under my skin. If so parati ba ganyan reaction mo sa mga judgmental commenters ng FP hindi lang kay Sam Go?

Also please practice what you preach and don't judge us, those that don't agree with your views regarding this issue (Sam Go's insult), saying we're worse than those bekis the letter sender insulted. How so? Who are you to judge us? May ginawa ba kaming masama sayo? All we did was disagree with your comment and you don't even know us :P (See what i did there?)

this "sam go is so mayabang, matapobre at reklamador" Issue can go in circles, let's just focus on the MAIN issue, why don't we? The organizers are clearly in the wrong, and they deserve all The backlash coming their way from the people who didn't get to enter the event even with tickets. They should learn from what happened and make sure that this does not happen again in the future. Just my two cents.

    2. @September 21, 2012 8:27 PM:
Did you read what I wrote? Seems like you didn't get it, hey! The way I see it you're the one who's making a mountain out of a molehill.

First of all, my previous comment is for those people that insulted others who reacted negatively not for Sam Go. Since you reacted then obviously you are one of them. I posted a comment before that and it just points out the SAM GO SHOULD'VE JUST FOCUSED ON THE ISSUE. I even said that "Sam Go has every right to be pissed and trash talk those annoying event staff, that's understandable" but leave the other guests BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT THE ISSUE HERE AND THEY ARE NOT THE ONES AT FAULT. So when did the crucifying moment you are talking about occur? You are barking at the wrong tree.

And no, I don't think of myself better than anyone of you, this is for that sarcastic comment of yours that sam go is not as good as me. Oh well, if you really "get it" how come what you just typed states the opposite?

Now let me let me quote you,
"Also please practice what you preach and don't judge us, those that don't agree with your views regarding this issue (Sam Go's insult), saying we're worse than those bekis the letter sender insulted. How so? Who are you to judge us? May ginawa ba kaming masama sayo? All we did was disagree with your comment and you don't even know us :P (See what i did there?)"
-This paragraph also confirms that you are one of those NARROW-MINDED PEOPLE WHO ATTACKED OTHER COMMENTERS FOR NOT SHARING THE SAME OPINION WHICH IS SOOOO UNNECESSARY SINCE YOU JUST SAID, LETS FOCUS ON THE ISSUE. Now who reacted negatively first and who doesn't practice what they preach? Not me for sure, I'm just answering you back. Uhmmnn, where do you really stand??? How come all of a sudden you wanna focus on the main issue when you are one of those who started looking at things that really didn't matter? And yeah, I just did! Didn't you notice I that I just practiced what I preached? You insulted us so I just aired what I think of you. Isn't insulting other people a bad thing? If so, then yeah that's the bad thing you did to me. Too bad at this point you are still asking if you've done anything wrong. Obviously for you, fabricating a story about other people is perfectly fine. I bet you will ask me what story has been fabricated. Not sure if it's you but surely someone posted that most of those who reacted negatively are the parloristas who can just afford renting in an internet cafe with mere 15 bucks in their pockets. Sorry to burst your bubble but I don't think that's who they are. I hope you will get it this time coz it seems like somebody has to spoon-feed you by explaining everything or should I talk to you in the language where you're most comfortable? Parlez-vous français? Franglais?? Mandarin??? Spanglish???? Hablas español????? Oh did I just made a statement where you can tag me as an arrogant b*tch? See? It works! You can show excessive pride in your abilities without stepping on other people's toes! Who am I to judge you? Well, if you don't wanna be judged then shut your pie hole.

Lastly, you don't have the right to question my reaction regarding those shallow comments against people who reacted negatively. Is this the way I react every time? Hell no, as a matter of fact you can count on your fingers the times that I posted here. I don't usually comment. Please don't assume that this is getting on my nerves. I'm just reacting to unnecessary attacks.

Now if you still has something to say then go on, I won't answer back since everything was clearly explained and I don't have so much time in my hand to cat fight online.

  49. i was offered 2 VIP tickets the day before the bash. at first i got excited as i've never attended such event in my life. admittedly it's not my thing, but still i was about to give it a try -- for the sole reason of the experience. however i recalled i had appointment with my doctors on the eve of the event so i declined the tickets almost as soon as those were offered to me.

reading Sam Go's letter, i feel so relieved i didn't go afterall. thanks to her "description" of how some of the attendees were dressed/looked like, i had a clearer picture of what transpired. i didn't really think she's hitting below the belt, although i can see how it could easily trigger the event's 'fanatics' anger.

i've bought Cosmo mags, but to be honest, i'm not a fan. don't really consider myself a subscriber. but if i bothered to show up to an event, FREE OR NOT, and had an experience short of a nightmare, my letter would be way more detailed than Sam's. most likely less or no the comments at all on parloristas..but still i'm gonna lambast the responsible team straight to the core.

FP readers, though your comments here are indeed quite amusing, it wouldn't hurt to practice a little more intelligence before typing in those hateful, insecure, provoking, nonsense quips. :) stay focused on the topic. the bash was not handled properly. :) were you the letter sender, the mature ones would surely empathize with you and not go "ikaw na perfect! ikaw na ang hindi nagreresearch! ikaw na ang nobela-prize winner!" :) peace! :D
