This is really a copy. Kasi Esquire's mother publication in the US had approved them. I had a little research about this yesterday because of one comment I read in one previous article this week. Wag na kayo magalit. Hayaan niyo na magfeeling sila JLC and Iza na hollywood stars sila :D
If I were one of the creative team of the US Esquire, I'll be totally be pissed. Their ideas are being recycled every time. And another thing is, we readers are being short changed in a way. Also, Esquire is just a new magazine here in the Philippines, I hope they will have their own identity so they could last like other magazines here.
Hindi siya utos. It's allowed but it's not directed.
tama...hindi magkapag-establish ng sariling identity ang esquire phl dahil it seems they we're not allowed to decide kung ano ang gusto nila. hindi talaga papayag ang mga puti na masapawan sila ni juan dela cruz. just a waste of talent!
it's the local version haller... and different person haller.
KOREK! yung IBA KASI NAGMAMARUNONG-RUNONGAN! from an original will always come another one - either inspired, copied a bit and becomes another original. it's just a cycle. whatever sells gets the most out of it.
Reminder, it's a local counterpart so there's a big possibility that the magazine received a directive on what should be the format of the cover of the magazine.
Kaya nga ang tanong are they required to copy 'cause it's the same magazine!
pede din na palusot na lng na they had a directive na exact copy ang mga covers.. hafta check the other esquire mags in other countries if they have the same cover..kung wala, gaya gaya tlaga. ;p
It's not copied. It's merely the Philippine version of those covers. After all, it's just a franchise. This is being done by magazines with various international editions.
So sad that many of us think negatively of something without understanding the context of the stuff they rant about. Sigh.
because we don't like to copy cats! we have enough impersonators in showbiz, pati ba naman sa magazines versions din lang? and Esquire should add in their marketing campaign that they are merely making cover-versions of the US Esquire para hindi feel-cheated ang consumers
kung di kopya, patingin ng esquire mexico version, uk version, china version, korea version, whatever version na the same cover din. para mawala ang agam agam.
it is very apparent, there is not even an iota of doubt regarding it, that the striking similarities were not meant to be an homage to the mother/original American publication. On the contrary, this is a pathetic attempt on the end of pseudo-creative directors who are at best faux aesthetes purveying a delusional sense of cosmopolitanism. such repetitious and common passing off of foreign publications' designs as our own (which is not only limited to layout, cover designs, and magazine format but also extends to our fashion industry) makes one wonder what this obsession with all things foreign & offshore is all about.
Your pathetic attempt to make our noses bleed with your pseudo-creative highfalutin words is apparent and makes one wonder what this obsession with all words uncommon is all about.
iota strikes again! go lang sa "iota" comments so we can see the diversity of the readers and those who comment. come on, once in awhile, we need intellectually-sounding comment. hahaha. kesa naman jejemon o puro one word o balahura.
Its the same magazine - us & phil versions nga lang. franchise yung dito and if you look at all other magazines that are franchised ganyan din. Even the content may pareho, meron lang na binabago para bumagay sa taste ng pinoy readers. you cant blame the publisher, creative directors and the editor in chief because they get directives from their US counterparts. Shempre the US heads would still have creative control coz they have to protect their brand.
Baka they have a VIP compliance thing na there's a template and papalitan lang ang certain details dun sa template to localize it.
If US required the Philippine Esquire to follow the general idea of the US covers, that's not a good practice. It's quelling the individuality/creativity of the Philippine editors/stylists/photographers/etc. If the Philippine Esquire is not required to follow the US covers, then that doesn't speak well of the Philippine Esquire's staff/editors' originality. Either way, it's not good.
I think it is alright for Esquire Philippine to "copy" or take inspiration from the mother company. After all, same franchise lang naman sila. In franchising or licensing, pwede ka mag standardize or adapt. In this case, they adapted with local celebrities doing the same style.
Just because you are allowed to copy doesn't mean you should do it. It leaves a bad taste. JLC and Iza are goodlooking people but their copycat covers made them look like the generic, dollar store version of the original. I can't imagine the US photo editors telling Erwin Romulo, "Psst, just copy this Angelina Jolie draped in silk for your chosen coverstory, it's ok no one will find out, it was done in 2007, Filipinos have short memory."
Esquire mag is known for their iconic covers but they also recycle their own or someone else's concept. They recreated the iconic Virna Lisi's 1965 "beard shaving" cover on Jessica Simpson. They also took the same stock image of Barrack Obama's Time Cover from the same photographer.
pansin ko lng, halos lahat ng nagcomment na its a copy, may defend na comment na bka its a directive.. hmmm, mon... ista-tue?? if its true na may agreement na dapat mgkatulad to "localize" kc franchise, can please provide another cover pa ng esquire in another country na same template din?
this is clearly an adaptation, possibly mandated by their head office. typical of multinational companies... have you seen shampoo, toothpaste, personal care brands recently? same execution in most countries / regions, differing only in talents / language used. kung magmarunong mga tao... ewan.
yeah, they have but as you have said- "same execution in most countries", meaning more than one country kung saan they have the brand.. This one, pinas version lng ang magkatulad. If we follow your premise, dapat ung ibang country din na merong circulation ng mag nila ay may ganyang cover din.. asan na? *rolls eyes*
Bekimond? Explain talaga to death? Magpaliwanag ka daw sa nearest baranGAY in your area. Mag-out na kasi! Kung may Bebe G, ikaw na! Si Bekimond G! Tapatan mo na! Now na, bilis!
This is obviously required. Mga haters shut up na pls.. Nakakainis basahin mga comments nyo.. Alang common sense.
Konting originality naman please, don't insult your readers by giving us your lazy, rehashed, second-rate copies just because you think we don't know any better.
Aliw, aliw, aliw!!!
eh ano naman bagay naman sa kanila plus the fact na franchise ng US ang Esquire dito so walang copy cat ano. parang Cosmo mag lang, iisa lang ang pose ng mga covers nila, naka semi cross yung isang leg tapos isang kamay sa bewang. henaku big deal talaga?
the robert downey jr cover is from may 2012 so i guess okay lang. it is the same magazine that's tweaked for the philippine market. that angelina cover however, is from july 2007!
Ok guys, pra tigil na pagtatalo... RDJ Esquire May 2012, yung kay Angelina Jolie was July 2007 pa. I am not sure abt Iza's if recent lang yan... Now, it is up to you guys if the Ph version was copied or nagkataon lang... But 5 yrs ago pa yang post ni Angelina dyan...
Maybe esquire Philippines requires it that the cover photos must be similar to esquire USA. or maybe esquire ph run out of ideas so they dug up old editions of equire usa. just maybe.
Haha, maiba tayo. John Lloyd-Robert Downey, okay pa e. But what happened with Iza and Jolie? :)))
Utos yan n Mother Ship, anobakayyoh. Since the Esquire PH title is still in its infancy here, there has to be an international reference/connection. Gayunpaman, malaya naman ang lahat magbigay ng opinyon, but next time, I make your opinion substantial! Hindi yung makahirit lang!
Raymond isn't the EIC of Esquire, Erwin Romulo is. Raymond is their style editor.
And coming from the same industry, I do agree that copying the exact poses and colors/elements is tacky. However, magazines do get inspiration from other magazines. It's just a matter of adding a twist to the inspiration that should be practiced more often. That way, Pinoy mags won't be branded as copy cats.
IF EVER THEY ARE REQUIRED TO COPY, THEN I HAVE TO COMMEND GAYMOND FOR DOING A GREAT JOB. IF NOT, WELL I THINK NANANADYA YANG MGA YAN PARA UMINGAY AT MAGING CONTROVERSIAL ANG PHILIPPINE VERSION NG ESQUIRE NILA. LOL WOUKD U AGREE??
Tomo! I agree with u itay. Were more good looming than them LOL. Bite into the.bryt side Chos.
kasi local publishers have to get the approval of the original, foreign publisher for their cover. kung mareject yong cover dahil hindi feel ng Esquire US, the mag will be delayed. so para wala ng problems, they just imitate previous covers.
The first cover with the girl in a bikini wasn't really a copy. That pose has been done over and over again in different magazine. The other two though...whoa...super copya! In fairness, mas risque pa yung kay Iza kasing kay Angelina.
In what I observe, this is a tactic para umingay ang magazine nila. Kasi kung hindi nila gusto ipaalam na nanggaya or nag adapt sila, then dapat hindi na nangyari sa sumunod na cover. Naka tatlo na silang "adaptation". So, this is really a tactic and I think effective kasi maraming nag-aalburuto. Oh well, negative publicity is still a publicity.
i agree with you. tactic nga yan. also, georgina did it better. besides, kahit takpan pa buong katawan nia ng sako, mas maganda pa sha ibang blondies out there, period.
The problem is even if youre already caught cheating or copying, people still think it's ok and even justify it. No accountability. Stop making lousy excuses for them, it's obvious that the ideas were copied. :(
Same goes dun sa iba. They are allowed but not required. Hindi porke't pwede ibig sabihin dapat gawin mo. Parang ang bad taste kasi nakikita mo ang comparison. Parang generic pharmacy ang dating ng local version tapos yung US Mercury Drug.
To set things straight, local editions of international or U.S. based magazines like Esquire are strictly as in strictly monitored by the mother management of the magazines. They do this in order to ensure that local editions adhere to the quality, look, feel, reportorial style of their international counterpart. Understandably, strict monitoring and compliance are just some of the measures being done by the mother management in order to protect the interest and reputation of their international magazine.
Covers included in this item are not mere copycats. Rather, they are local versions inspired by international covers.
thank you! that's what i was thinking, but you explained it so well. local versions inspired by intl covers. and if they want to do something totally different from that, then well and good. if they're going to do a generic version, then that's that.
couldn't agree with you more! georgina so did it better! don't get me wrong, i love jennifer lawrence. but in this one, i liked georgie's version more.
To talagang si beckimond... tsk... tsk...
let's face it. copy cat naman lagi dito sa pinas. Movies pa lang nga e. Kaya humihina ang movie industry. Old movies have more substance and originality. Sa music scene naman panay remake... hay
Management was made aware that there should be similarities in terms of the concept or inspiration so we shouldn't overreact. Even before we've seen what we called "the copy cat" covers, they've of course, unblinkingly reviewed & noticed the similarities before presenting to the public. They're under the same umbrella so it's perfectly fine. We can call it a real Scanner if the covers are for another mag,
Me ma issue lang!
ay si liz uy ba? eew. she's so gross, kahit anong gawin nia. we don't know if this is just a ruse from esquire itself. do you actually know what's going within their memos? baka mamaya clever ruse nga, kze tingnan mo, pinaguusapan ngayon.
I don't see anything wrong in the similarities. The one with Iza on the cover was tastefully done, an ode to Angelina's gorgeous cover. Baka nga naman nagpaalam ang Pinas na kokopyahin nila and Esquire US agreed.
COPYKAT tsk!
ReplyDeleteDon't judge too easily. Baka naman may directives from US na dapat ang local version ay same ang peg sa kanila.
DeleteTama! Baka ganun nga! I think walang masama kasi parehong magazine, local version nga lang. IMO.
DeleteThis is really a copy. Kasi Esquire's mother publication in the US had approved them. I had a little research about this yesterday because of one comment I read in one previous article this week. Wag na kayo magalit. Hayaan niyo na magfeeling sila JLC and Iza na hollywood stars sila :D
Deleteso you mean dapat me mahalungkat din tayong esquire na published sa ibang nations looking like that?
DeleteIza's cover was an ode to angelica's classic cover, it was done on purpose. And jlc's cover is a dime a dozen.
DeleteSino si angelica??
DeleteOo nga. Sino si Angelica?
DeleteI have a feeling na si Anonymous 11:52 ay si Gaymond. Sya ng EIC ng Esquire diba?
DeleteIf I were one of the creative team of the US Esquire, I'll be totally be pissed. Their ideas are being recycled every time. And another thing is, we readers are being short changed in a way. Deleteyeah, pati wet look gayang-gaya.
ReplyDeleteSi Gaynond ang stylist or whatever you call it ng Esquire di ba?
DeleteStyled by Liz Uy nga nakalagay dun sa cover.
Deletehahaha.. twa ko dun ah
Deletetama...hindi magkapag-establish ng sariling identity ang esquire phl dahil it seems they we're not allowed to decide kung ano ang gusto nila. hindi talaga papayag ang mga puti na masapawan sila ni juan dela cruz. just a waste of talent!
DeleteUy FP in fairness skn ako nagcomment about this dun sa Anne cover ah! hahaha! Wla lang I'm happy that you made a post about this :)
ReplyDeleteAlam mo, because of you din, napa google ako yesterday hahaha... very resourceful ka teh! I've read your comment kasi eh
Deleteikaw na teh! hay payb!
DeleteTanggapin mo ang plake. Paano kami kung wala ka.
DeleteBaka naman kasi may policy na wag mag deviate masyado from the covers of their US counterpart.
ReplyDeletePanung policy eh ibang tao naman yung cover dito...isip-isip teh
DeleteMedyo!!! Hahaha parang who did it best?!
ReplyDeleteFor me this is totally copying instead of just "inspired by" photo.
ReplyDeleteWala namang sinabing "inspired by" di ba? Parehong esquire ung magazine, isang US at isang local version nga lang.
Deleteok. for you lang pala e.
Pwe!
Deletecopy na copy...
ReplyDeletecoz it's the same magazine...haller
Deleteit's the local version haller... and different person haller.
Deletemaybe some format of the magazine just like how some tv commercials of different products look the same when they were made by a single ad agency.
ReplyDeleteI agree. And the shots look good naman. The bad thinng lang is that people always find the negative in something.
DeleteI agree
DeleteKOREK! yung IBA KASI NAGMAMARUNONG-RUNONGAN! from an original will always come another one - either inspired, copied a bit and becomes another original. it's just a cycle. whatever sells gets the most out of it.
DeleteMr editor in chief na kabadingan, pwede ba wag manggaya.
DeleteSi Bekimond may kasalanan
Reminder, it's a local counterpart so there's a big possibility that the magazine received a directive on what should be the format of the cover of the magazine.
Deletehay naku ang pinoy talaga walang ORIGINALITY. We are oozing with talents but why we pinoys are too much copy-cats....
ReplyDeleteIt's the same magazine, maybe they are really required to copy.
Deletekumbaga sa exam, kulang n lng pati pangalan kopyahin!
ReplyDeleteIts the same magazine

ReplyDeletesure ka bang gaya-gaya? di ba pwedeng sunud-sunuran lang sa utos ng US counterpart? same magazine o!
Deletegaymond, ikaw ba yan? kanina mo pa pinagtatanggol ah. paulit-ulit! kaloka
Deleteno problem with me. its legal and honestly, its kinda interesting to see the pinoy version. john loyd looks good btw
ReplyDeleteAnonymousJune 8, 2012 1:06 AM, i beg to differ. he does not look good. tapos tinabi pa kay robert downey, jr.
Deleteoo, ako na goodlooking :P
true!
DeleteCopycats, more fun in the Philippines!
ReplyDeleteStupid commenters, more fun in the Philippines!
DeleteIt's the same magazine BTW, just one local and one US published.
ayan na naman. dun ka nagwo-work no? haha
DeleteHahaha!
DeleteKaya mo yan gaymond. One man team sa pagtatanggol sa Esquire. Wala ka bang subordinates? Hahaha!

ReplyDeletebut i have to agree, ang gwapo ni JLC sa cover nya ha. ;)
we're not sure if this is the directive of the US management.
Delete2nd rate trying hard COPYCAT! hahaha
ReplyDeleteare you sure it's copied, malay mo naman they are just following directives!

ReplyDeleteyeah, they have but as you have said- "same execution in most countries", meaning more than one country kung saan they have the brand.. This one, pinas version lng ang magkatulad. If we follow your premise, dapat ung ibang country din na merong circulation ng mag nila ay may ganyang cover din.. asan na? *rolls eyes*
DeleteBekimond? Explain talaga to death? Magpaliwanag ka daw sa nearest baranGAY in your area. Mag-out na kasi! Kung may Bebe G, ikaw na! Si Bekimond G! Tapatan mo na! Now na, bilis!
Deleteyou have a point here...baka esquire phils is following certain guidelines re: magazine layout.
DeleteThis is obviously required. Mga haters shut up na pls.. Nakakainis basahin mga comments nyo.. Alang common sense.
ReplyDeleteagree ako na it must be a directive. alam naman kaya ng local stars na may ginagaya silang foreign cover?
ReplyDeleteUr nothing but a second-rate trying hard copycat!
Konting originality naman please, don't insult your readers by giving us your lazy, rehashed, second-rate copies just because you think we don't know any better.
Aliw, aliw, aliw!!!
ReplyDeleteeh ano naman bagay naman sa kanila plus the fact na franchise ng US ang Esquire dito so walang copy cat ano. parang Cosmo mag lang, iisa lang ang pose ng mga covers nila, naka semi cross yung isang leg tapos isang kamay sa bewang. henaku big deal talaga?
ReplyDeletethe robert downey jr cover is from may 2012 so i guess okay lang. it is the same magazine that's tweaked for the philippine market. that angelina cover however, is from july 2007!
ReplyDeleteOk guys, pra tigil na pagtatalo...
ReplyDeleteMaybe esquire Philippines requires it that the cover photos must be similar to esquire USA. or maybe esquire ph run out of ideas so they dug up old editions of equire usa. just maybe.
ReplyDeletelol! hanobanaman ate raymond! ikaw nalang kaya magengelina jolie parin bago naman!
ReplyDeleteHaha, maiba tayo. John Lloyd-Robert Downey, okay pa e. But what happened with Iza and Jolie? :)))
ReplyDeleteUtos yan n Mother Ship, anobakayyoh. Since the Esquire PH title is still in its infancy here, there has to be an international reference/connection. Gayunpaman, malaya naman ang lahat magbigay ng opinyon, but next time, I make your opinion substantial!
ReplyDeleteesquire phils should make a distinct move instead of copying from an old us esquire magazine cover...
ReplyDeleteRobert Downey Jr > John Lloyd Cruz \m/
ReplyDeleteRaymond isn't the EIC of Esquire, Erwin Romulo is. Raymond is their style editor.
ReplyDeleteAnd coming from the same industry, I do agree that copying the exact poses and colors/elements is tacky.
ReplyDeleteTomo! I agree with u itay. Were more good looming than them LOL. Bite into the.bryt side Chos.
Deletemay tinatawag daw kasing "Adaptation" & "Localization" at same brand naman sila. inaprubahan naman cgro ng Esqueire US yan.
ReplyDeletekasi local publishers have to get the approval of the original, foreign publisher for their cover. kung mareject yong cover dahil hindi feel ng Esquire US, the mag will be delayed. so para wala ng problems, they just imitate previous covers.
ReplyDeleteesquire is a regional magazine.. kaya usually regional
DeleteKAHIT COPYCAT. MASASABI KONG, MAS MAGANDA ANG VERSION NG PINOY. TAMA NA SA NEGATIVES. JUST FOCUS ON THE GOOD VIBES.
ReplyDeleteThe first cover with the girl in a bikini wasn't really a copy. That pose has been done over and over again in different magazine. The other two though...whoa...super copya! In fairness, mas risque pa yung kay Iza kasing kay Angelina.
ReplyDeleteIn what I observe, this is a tactic para umingay ang magazine nila.
ReplyDeletei agree with you. tactic nga yan. also, georgina did it better. besides, kahit takpan pa buong katawan nia ng sako, mas maganda pa sha ibang blondies out there, period.
Delete- dina mahaliparot
DeleteThe problem is even if youre already caught cheating or copying, people still think it's ok and even justify it. No accountability. Stop making lousy excuses for them, it's obvious that the ideas were copied. :(
Same goes dun sa iba. They are allowed but not required.
ReplyDeleteHindi porke't pwede ibig sabihin dapat gawin mo. Parang ang bad taste kasi nakikita mo ang comparison. Parang generic pharmacy ang dating ng local version tapos yung US Mercury Drug.
says who? di ba nga Imitation is the Best Form of Flaterry
Deleteoh wow, what a better generic version si georgina then!
Deletethey ran out of ideas na? hehe.
ReplyDeleteTo set things straight, local editions of international or U.S. based magazines like Esquire are strictly as in strictly monitored by the mother management of the magazines. They do this in order to ensure that local editions adhere to the quality, look, feel, reportorial style of their international counterpart. Understandably, strict monitoring and compliance are just some of the measures being done by the mother management in order to protect the interest and reputation of their international magazine.
ReplyDeleteCovers included in this item are not mere copycats. Rather, they are local versions inspired by international covers.
thank you! that's what i was thinking, but you explained it so well. local versions inspired by intl covers. and if they want to do something totally different from that, then well and good. if they're going to do a generic version, then that's that.
Delete- dina mahaliparot
and dedemanding niyo mga teh! parang OA kayo sa paghihimutok.
ReplyDeleteBTW.. Georgina did it BETTER!!!
Nope Jennifer Lawrence is hotter and sexier may curves pa talaga
Deletecouldn't agree with you more! georgina so did it better! don't get me wrong, i love jennifer lawrence. but in this one, i liked georgie's version more.
Deletecorrect! she's sexier than jennifer lawrence.
Deleteif you dont like it, dont buy it!
Deletecopya, copya, copya. Why even bother with local covers?
ReplyDeleteThese are direct copies...which mean that the locals have no talent, no imagination and no originality.
ReplyDeleteyou're a donkey's behind. if you think you can do better, DO IT!
DeleteE di eto din copycat din? haha!

What else is new? dahh..
To talagang si beckimond... tsk... tsk...
ReplyDeleteThe differences
ReplyDeleteFirst cover
Ph.right hand ang gamit ng babae
US..left hand
Second Cover--Ph. The word no more Mr. Nice Guy
US--walang word
Third Cover
Ph---Nakaside view ni Iza
US---front and center pose ni Angelina
hahahahahaha...COPY CAT...
let's face it. copy cat naman lagi dito sa pinas. Movies pa lang nga e. Kaya humihina ang movie industry. Old movies have more substance and originality. Sa music scene naman panay remake... hay
ReplyDeleteBonga lng ng talent ni gaymund at lizzy- copycat executives! only in da philippines...! Kaya di nabebenta ang mga magazines puro back issue
ReplyDeleteManagement was made aware that there should be similarities in terms of the concept or inspiration so we shouldn't overreact.
ReplyDeleteay si liz uy ba? eew. she's so gross, kahit anong gawin nia. we don't know if this is just a ruse from esquire itself. do you actually know what's going within their memos? baka mamaya clever ruse nga, kze tingnan mo, pinaguusapan ngayon.
ReplyDeleteI don't see anything wrong in the similarities. The one with Iza on the cover was tastefully done, an ode to Angelina's gorgeous cover. Baka nga naman nagpaalam ang Pinas na kokopyahin nila and Esquire US agreed.
