    2. You said it! Pag maputi, maganda na? Di ba pwedeng anak-araw lang? LOL, just kidding...

but seriously, Pinoys should stop believing that being fair skinned is equal to beauty and that being dark or black is not.

      Delete

      Delete
    4. oh yes it is - had it been that all three shared the same spotlight would make a better story out of the cover. this is totally insensitive and rude. a clear example of irresponsible journalism.

  2. Sayang. Maganda pa naman ang composition ng photo

  3. YES. SHADOWS says it all.

  4. For me, it's not RACISM kasi she just wants to say na she wants to get out of her shell.

(Maaring may Racism BUT NOT INTENTIONAL)

Kaso nga you can't help others feel it's RACISM and we must RESPECT that.

    1. there are many ways to interpret going out of ones shell not like this...

    2. not intentional...hmmm, they, of all people must be aware and be super cautious about such sensitive issues, negligence-this is what their cover is conveying, just saying...

    3. Darling, Anon 8:59 am is right. THere really are other ways. If you think this is just the only way, then I suggest you expand your perspective (and creativity)

  5. yeah. sad to say, but it is kinda racist. like the blacks/dark skinned dont stand out compared to whites/lighter skinned people. they could've done somethng with the lighting na lang or some other thng to show that she stands out from the crowd

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

  9. If this gets international attention, watch out for the outrage. Whoever thought of the concept of this cover needs to start writing their apology.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hmmm...International news? I don't think the rest of the world have as much free time as filipinos to scrutinize a photo that doesn't mean anything. But hey, I am pretty damn sure filipinos would love the attention.

      Delete
    2. well, when it comes to racism (and bullying), the international scene is not that forgiving. surely they would berate FHM Philippines.

    4. its in the BBC news international already.. she guested and defend about it. nag public apology din siya.

  10. Its byline jas nothing to do with the picture... The is truely racist if that is how they interpreted the byline which is so not IT...

    ReplyDelete
  11. yes! and very no other woman lang ang peg ng swimsuit!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Honestly, I don't think that the cover is racist. The context is pretty clear if you think about it. Bela Padilla (from the very much known Padilla clan) is finally stepping out of her family's shadow and shining in her own right. It will only seem racist if you don't take the context into consideration. The people who think it's racist are obviously not reading between the lines/photos.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My thoughts exactly.

      Delete
    2. Teh tell me how can you connect the stepping out of the shadow with the dark skinned women? Your interpretation of the byline is correct but the picture does not reflect any of what you just said... So think about it again..

      Delete
    3. haller?? talking about reading between the lines/photos?? why use black women pertaining to stepping out of the shadows??

    5. I agree with this comment.

      Delete
    6. Artistic nga eh. They should have used bella para talagang shadow version nya. I was like why?! Eh obvious naman what they're trying to say. May title naman. It may look racist to some people pero sinabi na ngang hindi so I don't get why there are still people attacking Bella and FHM.

      Delete
    7. Not everyone knows the "context". Who the eff is Bela Padilla anyway?

      Delete
    8. if they want to send the message of stepping out of the shadow then use a shadow not black women, even if they used morenas it will still be very
      racist,

      Delete
    9. salamat sa pagiging honest mo Teh, and you thought about it talaga ah, pero sino ba si Bela Padilla. If your perception on the context is right, how pathetic she's being potrayed. She's shining and stepping out of the shadow from her known Padilla clan by using black women? kasi hindi sya magshine over Pinoy stars? Ang cheap din ng context to represent 'stepping out of the shadow' by using black skinned women. How about gamitin naman ang pagiging pango ng Pinay for a certain woman to shine, we wouldn't like it, di ba? In short, this is racist and obviously we're not the same on reading between the lines/photos kasi I'm reading below the lines

      Delete
    10. Walang dugong Padilla si Bella :P boink!

      Delete
    11. Bela is not from the Padilla clan.:P

      Delete
    12. Good morning FP! mwah! Bella is not from the much known Padilla clan (as in Robin Padilla). This is racist for me. Please note that this is my opinion any argument is invalid. :P But whether this is really racist or not, I'm sure the magazine knew that the majority will see this as racist. (Haller, using dark skinned women as "shadows"? Haller talaga.) Now what are they trying to accomplish with this cover? One sure answer is to generate buzz. Naman, so they could sell! The cover photo is really nice, honestly people. Pero done bad taste talaga..tsk tsk. Remove "Stepping out of the shadows, or use real shadows for the photo!

      Delete
    13. That is wrong analogy. So why use black women in the background? Why not use silhouette of Asian women instead. The concept is a total failure.

      Delete
    14. I agree to this comment as
well. Its racist. Show this this to models who has dark reflection they will get offended. Actually na hurt rin ako ha.so? Ang mapuputi lang ba stand out sa world na ito? NOT.!!! If this pictures goes abroad isang damukal na comments makukuha ng fhm philippines.

      Delete
    15. Agree ako kay: Anon, Feb 27, 2012 08:57 AM

They should have just used a "shadow" version of Bela.

Free publicity!!! Sino ba kasi si Bela P.??? Sorry, wala syang dating.

      Delete

      -vel

    17. I commend FHM for trying to make it appear that Bela's stepping out but I think FHM should consider how this cover would affect the society as a whole. Sure, she did stood out because of her skin - just her skin, not her talent. If they wish to make her stand out, I THINK dapat di napunta yung focus sa skin eh.

Actually, she is indeed from the Padilla clan, as in Robin, Bb Gandanghari, Mommy Eva clan! I know, because i know their family!

Personally, i dind this racist pero di naman fault to ni Bela, if the message that they want

      Delete
    20. If the message that fhm wants to conver is Bela's coming out of the shadow di sana dark version nya ginamit, pinaitim na sha dapat ang ginawa, mas bongga pa!

    21. Hi AnonymousFeb 27, 2012 08:51 PM. Bela is from the Carino side, hence, not "from" or a Padilla. She does not have a trickle of Padilla blood in her veins. She interacts closely with the Padilla's tho. Mommy Eva Cariño-Padilla and Bela's lola are sisters. Bale first cousins si Robin Padilla with Bela's mom. So is Bela a Padilla? If Eva Carino was not married to Robin's dad (the Padilla), Bela won't have any connection with them. Sheesh..Sorry if my comment offended you..

      Delete

    23. I showed this photo to a black female and male friend. the Female said what made it racist is the 'stepping out of the shadows' na title. she immediately thought of having the blacks as the shadow, which to her is offensive. she said kung wala daw siguro yung stepping out of the shadow or maybe it was a different title, she would see it in a more artistic way. The Male black friend of mine said, right away, she looks ok but no offense I think this is photoshopped. Second comment, what are the black women doing around her. He didn't even notice the title LOL. entonses, pag mga male mags, there is no artistic value whatsoever, at being that men are mostly one track mind when it comes to the content, walang open mind open mind... iba ang inoopen nila pag bumibili ng ganitong klaseng mags LOL... from a pep comment which I agree 100%

    24. Who the hell cares about Bela stepping out of the shadow? Sorry but not all people have time to think out of the context dear. True the picture was great though most people think that it's always photoshopped :) it's just the caption that made it look racist. It's like saying that black people are just shadows literally :)

  14. Definitely racist. Stepping out of the shadows, why do they need to put Black women around her?! This is just plain stupid. Use them as "shadows"?? Mahiya naman sila. Black women are beautiful, they need not be "shadows" to other people.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Honestly HINDI. If you put meaning to everything talagang ganyan ang mangyayari. Just like the stupid Anne Curtis and Nora Aunor issue, who the hell cares kung may hawak silang cigarette? children wouldn't buy that kind of magazine. At saka ito, Binigyan lang ng meaning There's nothing wrong with it. It's still an art, Everybody can express a photograph in different ways. The world is unfair, DEAL WITH IT.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ate/ kuya kung sino ka man... Please think about what you just said.. ILLUSTRATIONS are suppose to have meaning hahaha pinapatawa mo naman ako...

      Delete
    2. Downright NO. The issue with the cigarette smoking thing is because Philippines is a conservative country. I agree that its not a big deal, hell even our president smokes. But RACISM is a worldwide issue. If this cover is available to other countries (NOT ONLY in the US) It will certainly cause an OUTRAGE. Racism in general is a constant struggle. Read your history. A true artist
definitely knows is he is stepping out of the line. He certainly knows the meaning of RESPECT to other people.

But seriously, ART in FHM? are u effing kiddin me? When did that happen?

      Delete
    3. "The world is unfair, DEAL WITH IT." -- and should this line also mean na white/fairer-skinned people are simply better than those people whose skin are of darker shade/s? Haha. Everyone knows that life is unfair, pero wag sa ganitong aesthetics. AnonymousFeb 27, 2012 12:35 PM is right. Smoking a cigarette is a choice but being born white or black can NEVER be a choice.

      Delete
  16. I don't think it's racist. Kung baliktarin nating mga puti ang nasa background at woman of color ang nilagay sa gitna, what difference does it make? May magsasabi pa ring racist kasi singled out ang dark-skinned .

    ReplyDelete

    1. No one, kase ang sasabihin nila ang ganda ng black na yun.. yun lang tao na yun but not all black people. Ikaw teh you choose kung ano gusto mong kulay?

  17. racist is not the word to describe it... it was just misrepresentation of the message they want to imply, "stepping out of the shadow". there is something wrong with this picture. if they want to be artistic, please do it right. i'm assuming the team of this magazine are educated. they should've at least did research and think things out thoroughly. i appreciate that they were trying to be artistic instead of just showing sexy models but there was just something wrong.
sorry to compare FHM to Rogue which was articulated really well.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Kundi ba naman ewan, stepping out of the shadows tapos palibutan ba 'tong si Bela Padilla ng dark skinned women, anong hindi racist dun?

    ReplyDelete
INSENSITIVE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's not racism. It may be the interpretation of the people looking at the photo. Some may think that Bella used Black People to shine her color. But the magazine's issue is that Bella came out of her shell. I think that people should learn how to think on both sides.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It is racist. Search for "blackface" on Google.

Nabasa nyo ba yung mga tweets kay Bella and to FHM? Grabe sobra sobra yung level ng hate. Parang hindi na nag iisip. Kala mo nakaexperience ng racism before. Buti sana kung racist talaga yung minumura and nilalait nila. Haters complaining about racism nakakaloka.

  34. racism. they should've thought of other concept to use. it's a very careless act. people in all industry should be reminded and keep in mind to be careful and think very well before talking, doing and publishing things because it'a known fact that media is a great influence to all. some consumers may not be aware of it but it is true.

    ReplyDelete
  35. At the minimum, it is lazy, insensitive, and the implications were not well-thought out.... at worst, it is continuing with the racial stereotype that being white/fair-skinned is better than being dark-skinned.

Why oh why did they have to darken the skin color of the other girls? Couldn't they have used more creativity and imagination on how to better illustrate "stepping out of the shadows" better?

    ReplyDelete
  36. RACIST. kahit ano pang excuses ang ibigay na "she's just stepping out of the shadows" -- it's still racist.

honestly sa magazines naman, the first thing readers notice is the photo - not the copy/text on it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. For some people who are more open minded they would say it's not. But honestly, the production team could've done better. I'd say to the ones who says it's racist, we can't blame them as to the fact that they have a point. Seems legit.

    ReplyDelete

  39. Racist or not racist, I think it was simply done in bad taste.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Definitely RACIST. They could have described the concept in a totally different manner. In this case, the "shadows" were the African-American (blackfaced) models. How crude and insensitive is that?!! Our people should be educated on racism. Perhaps emphasize this more in schools?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You contradict yourself. If "educated" mga tao sa Pinas, why do many Flipinos call African-Americans n___ or Hindi nationals, bum___y? Why do supposed "educated" people like the ones behind this photoshoot used black models to make someone na porke maputi lang to appear above them? The truth is, majority ng Pilipino racist talaga and uneducated about it, which is funny kasi we have problems with a wafer snack being called a Filipino while we find it perfectly okay to tag people outside our own race as n__o, bum___y, b__ho and whatnot.

  41. Just when 23-year-old, Asian-American Jeremy Lin is fighting for his spot in the NBA against racist stereotypes, here we have a magazine with someone his age "promoting" racism. I understand it's not Bela's fault, but being an intelligent girl, she should've known better. As for FHM, shame on them!

    ReplyDelete
  42. it's the way the black women look at Bella. parang nanliit sa mga sarili yung mga black because they were black.. sana ang ginawa na lang nila na concept is like dapat pantay lang whether you're white or black..or whatever.. just saying!

    ReplyDelete
  43. To each his/her own sabi nga di ba? We are all entitled to our own opinion and the matter of how we look and interpret things is the issue here.. No doubt...

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think the racist part here is unintentional. After all, there are no "white" shadows.Otherwise, they would've portrayed the shadows in a different color had our own shadows been of a different shade.

    ReplyDelete
  45. stepping out of the shadow, and then they used black people, how intelligent!

  49. Everything about this cover is so racist, belat padilla is putting her arm on the shoulder of a black woman looking mighty proud while the other black women are looking up to her, one is looking down, the black women are portrayed as if "lower class". Wait until makita to ni floyd mayweather, kung si jeremy lin nga pinagdiskitahan, ano na lang pag nakita nya to. hay sayang ang todo posing at photoshop ni cover girl.

  51. I think this is a marketing strategy ng FHM.. Hahaha.. Kasi I think, they did it on purpose so they would have people talking about Bella Padilla. And they planned it all along to have the cover changed so people would be looking forward to the change/s they would make. And no, I don't think it is racist.. It's just INSENSITIVE of them to do this kind of shoot.

  54. not racist. the one who's judging ang racist.. porke't maitim racist na agad? di ba pwedeng artistic lang? over acting lang kasi yung iba.. yung iba naman nakikisawsaw. aminin na kasi, racist naman lahat. lalagyan na nang meaning lahat. pero ayaw ko naman kay Bella so sige, racist ang picture.. hahahahaha.

    ReplyDelete

  56. ESPN sacked an online editor for the "chink in the armor" headline in reference to Jeremy Lin and also suspended a popular commentator for a month. That's how serious the fight against racial stereotypes should also be in our country. There's no excuse for this cover. It is racist.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Well the title says "coming out of the shadows" so literally they darkened her surroundings - including the two models beside her. Sometimes a tomato is just a tomato. OA naman ng racism claims. Besides, ano ba ang isa sa pinakamabentang services sa skin clinics like Belo these days? Pampaputi. Our country is obssessed with whiter skin.

It's good to be politically correct and culturally sensitive pero hypocrisy is as equally off-putting as racism.

Bella looks gorgeous by the way lol.

    ReplyDelete
  58. they could have expressed it differently. instead of showing a girl with african genes, siguro yung obvious na maputi but have body paint to make them look black.

still the cover is ill-thought talaga. FHM covers have been blase lately....

    ReplyDelete
  59. I don't get the two black women on the sides. Epic fail absolutely.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think without reading the sub text of "coming out of the shadow" no one can really know that THAT is what the shoot portrays. Honestly if FHM would have wanted THAT to happen, they could have gotten only "painted on" models and not a real black model, coz honestly artistry is a thread bare close to racism. imo

    ReplyDelete
  62. who is bela padilla?

    ReplyDelete
  63. who is bela padilla? i have to google her pa, yet, still no recall.

  64. It's not racist at all. Art, in all its forms, are made to evoke different emotions and reactions from those who see it. Our perception of art varies and depends on how we define things, what we believe in.

FHM has always been a magazine proud of the beauty of Filipinas, I don't think they would intentionally put out a cover that would discriminate against anyone. Everything - from the images to the copy to the actual story, should all be taken in context. The photo and the word SHADOWS shouldn't be taken so literally. Those who think the cover is racist puts the judgement on the dark-skinned women.

If the cover is racist, the same should also be said for whitening products.

  67. ano vey! shempre racist etoh! kelangan pa ba i-memorize yun?

when doing mag cover, it is definitely subject to interpretation. unang tingin pa lang, nagmumura na ang salitang DISCRIMINATION. Im sure people behind this are aware of the would-be reaction of the people...c'mon! you mean, when they were brainstorming this concept e wala man lang nakaisip na baka maging nega interpretation ng mga tao? Obviously, this is just a marketing/publicity gimmick...e sino ba naman kase bibili ng magazine nila kung di nman kilala yung cover or di man lang oozing with sex appeal ang cover nila? at least now, may nakakilala na kay Bela...who nga ulit? ...ahhh Padilla pala.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  69. OR -- They really made it that way so people would react. They would know how many people really care. Since Bela isn't a superstar like Anne, they had to make an issue. I'm just guessing.

    ReplyDelete
  70. mali lahat interpretation nyo....gusto ipakita ng cover na ito na she's really a Padilla...PEG lang naman si BB. Stepping out of the shadows of BB?

  73. kung sa US na publish to, may bomb threat at rally na siguro sa tapat ng Summit office. really classy and smart, FHM.

    ReplyDelete
  74. this is BY FAR, the STUPIDEST COVER ON A MAGAZINE THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. it is not only RACIST. it is CHEAP. if this were to be done in another country, THE MAGAZINE will be SUED. BLACK people suffered a lot from the hands of the europeans and americans for sooo many generations and this is very insensitive.

PLEASE SPARE ME THE HYPOCRISY.

let me put it this way, what if these people make fun of our sufferings saying we filipinos are over reacting with this edsa edsa and the africans suffered more than the indios generations ago? wouldnt we be hurt as well?

and please, lets EDUCATE our self, let us erase the stigma that we are third world idiots. we must learn to embrace all types of beauty. kung tutuusin, darker skin people are more given praise these days. enough of these whitening products.

AND OH, If this girl is really beautiful herself, why would FHM need darker skinned models to emphasize that?

    1. true. those who don't see BEYOND the image in front of them are people who do not really think, so there's no such thing as "interpretation" going on on their part. EDUCATE is the term. let us all educate ourselves on world history, especially in today's "internationalization".

      P.S.
FB friend at dating orgmate ko sa college ang nag-raise ng issue na to with FHM. I must say she has all the "K" in the world to criticize this cover.

  75. If she really wanted to step outside of the shadow sana may shadow diyan. Eh hindi naman shadow ang kasama niya!

Well this is just for Publicity Purposes!

SInadya nila talaga yan.

Masyadong phinotoshop...hahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  79. Stepping out of the shadow tapos black people yung nasa likod.. malinaw na racist yun! why consider black people as shadow? stepping out? what's wrong being black to step out? bad concept! though unintentional.. they must be more sensitive especially in using other race.. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Racist. Intentional to catch people's attention. Instant publicity.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I like the cover. I don't think its racist. Magaganda rin naman yung ibang models, one is even prettier than Bella.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  83. Your perception of racism is utterly absurd. Whoever took this photograph had a totally different vision that was taken out of proportion by narrow-minded filipinos who want to create controversies to attract attention.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Magazines all over the world have covers similar to this, sometimes even bolder and more daring, yet you don't see americans blurting out racial slurs for attention.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Those who think this cover is "IGNORANT" then maybe you should retract your statement and spend some good money on a really good dictionary. Or better yet, just google the word ignorant before making a fool out of yourself online.

    ReplyDelete
Ang hypocrite that you're asking for respect pero you also can't give it to others

oh well, may pagka'racist nga yung cover so sana palitan nila to

    ReplyDelete
  90. bakit racist? wala naman masama maging negra.. ala naman masama maging maputi....

    ReplyDelete
  91. NOT RACIST, BUT INSENSITIVE.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Its racist. Even if it is unintentional, it is racist. The picture also gives a different message, "Pag mas maputi ka, mas angat ka".

    ReplyDelete
  93. For me it wasnt racist at all. People who think it was racist, They might just be the ones who are racist. Coming out of the shadows is a form of figurative language. Bella happens to be connected to the Padilla clan so im thinking that she does not want to be known as a Padilla but have a name of her own. It doesnt mean that you have someone as fair as her and dark girls in the background automatically means its a racist photo. We have to be considerate sometimes especially in the media industry. It might just be a strategy of theirs to catch people's attention. This is just my opinion ok? :)

    ReplyDelete
  94. Actually it was also Bella's idea. She was interviewed sa QTV11 nyung follow that star something na show, and sinabi nya na pinaggayahan nyan ay yung photoshoot ni Nicole Kidman

    ReplyDelete
  95. not intentional. kase interpretation lang ng shadows pero un nga di lang nag ingat sa concept. makakaisip ng iba mga tao... like racism nga.

    ReplyDelete
  96. excuse me my fellow filipino...before we point a finger at the people behind this concept, lets try to reflect on our beha ior whenever we see someone im a doff color. whu do we laugh at whitney tyson? norman mitchell? whenever there is a black person we see on yv or in persobal we always make fun of them shame on you bastards

    ReplyDelete
  97. Racist, arrogant , ignorant, MAECHOS, FEELING!!! Di nagiisip!!! I was going to say that the girls on the backgoround are way fiercer than the cover girl but on second look, they were made to pose as if they are wanting to have her complexion. So insensitive!!! Idi*ts.

    ReplyDelete
  98. HAHAHA!!! She is NOT from the Padilla clan!!!

    ReplyDelete
  99. It's racist, obviously. Case in point is BP who's well educated pero "uneducated" on the issue. Very frustrating to watch that BBC interview. I cringed at her answers (the interviewer looked incredulous and tinaasan na sya ng kilay). Pwedeng makatulong ang media sa pag-educate ng tao by tackling this issue with a group of experts. Sigurado magiging interesado ang mga kababayan natin kasi it's something new for them. This can help in changing our collective mentality for the better.

    ReplyDelete
  100. no! its not a racist, you people don't know how to appreciate art., it's not a big deal.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  102. ang point lang is....wag gamiting coming out of the shadow ang black peepz...imagine ang caption is coming out of the shadow tapos she is literally emerging from black women posed as shadows...nakaka racist nga naman.....

    ReplyDelete
  103. Of course it is.

What makes this even worse e ang assumption ng maraming Pinoy na pag fair-skinned ka na (Bela, Pauleen, Lucy Torres) e "white" ka na.
