  1. It's okay to get "inspirations" from other creations but the look is too similar na its just right to call it a copy.

  2. Inspiration. So designer items can reach the masses.

  5. with the global village, there's no such thing as copycat. everything is "inspired."

  6. Maybe they were both just following a trend? In fairness, I think I like Joey's look than Yohji's (i.e. the woman's version looks more refined while Yohji's look, although fashion forward and modern, seems conceptual. Anyway, in Fashion--even at the most prestigious/highly regarded level of designers, there's only a few who are real trendsetters. Most are inspired and have some level of derivativeness.

FYI. I do not know Joey Samson personally.

  7. Menswear is pretty common naman so I think neither? They look different enough to me.

  10. ang style ng damit paulit-ulit lang while ang mga designer binabago lang ng konti ang design para masabing kanila ang concept na iyon...i don't think there's a big deal on this.

  11. mejo malayo naman ang design excpet for the pants na mejo open yung sa harap. But nevertheless, i do not like this Joey Samson's designs. nagpapaka edgy and all. I do not know why he is liked by Bench/Human. Weird designs from a weird designer.

  12. Joey Samson first showed this particular collection at Singapore Men's Fashion Week in March 2011. It was well received there. The Fashion Watch show that featured this collection was presented in June 2011 (about 3 months after the successful SG-MFW), contrary to what the author of the blog stated, which was July 2011.

Please be accurate with your facts.

  13. Joey Samson's top isn't that loose so no, I don't think it's copied. And tacky ng nasa right though, haha.

  14. i hope the author will get his facts straight. i was at the Singapore Men's fashion week show of Joey Samson in March and saw the entire collection. The Fashion Watch show (which I also attended) last June is the re-appropriation of that menswear collection into women. If you only researched well...you will get your timeline straight.
I hope you will be very careful in labeling our local designers as copycats. Even the most prestigious international designers get inspiration from past collections, styles and trends.

  15. its not about the top people. Look at the bottoms -- the unzipped look. the material. the wide pockets. the pants over pants look. COPYCAT! of course, pinoy eh ...what do u expect!

  16. Hay nako this Joey Samson is big headed na. we knew him from before pa when he was just an assistant of a veteran designer. my mom wanted to try him out for a change, so she gave him a couple of fabrics from abroad and asked him to make her a couple of tops. that was back in february. we asked him a couple of times if ok na, busy daw siya. so after a while we asked him if he can return the fabrics nalang. no reply. he hasn't answered our calls or texts ever since.

  17. i hope people would research first before commenting. this particular collection was first showed in Singapore in March 2011 at the Singapore Men's Fashion Week. He then used the same collection and converted it to women's wear for the Fashion Watch show that was presented in JUNE 2011. I attended both shows. Sorry FP, your facts are incorrect. If you really are a fashion person you should know the timelines of the shows and the designers' collections. I hope you will be more responsible in posting and calling our local designers as copycats.

  20. Focusing on the bottoms, those are actually called chaps - sturdy coverings for the legs that are buckled on over trousers. They are most commonly associated with the cowboy culture of the American west. I guess both designers looked back to that for inspiration.

  21. To correct HF's assertions, this particular piece was not included in Joey Samson's collection shown in Singapore. The blogger's facts are accurate. Those who say otherwise should do their research.

    1. They are called chaps. Not pants over pants.

    2. There is no "unzipped look" because chaps don't have zippers. They are supposed to be NOT joined at the crotch area.

    3. Unless you are there at both shows, I don't think one's eye is that keen for details regarding material and texture.

    4. There are NO pockets. Those are cutouts for access to the actual pockets on the pants beneath. I'm guessing you really do have x-ray eyes! There are no visible pockets/cutouts in the Yohji Yamamoto design.

    5. Filipinos should be ashamed of countrymen like you who throw derogatory comments against your own race.

  24. hmmm...i watched Joey Samson's Fashion Watch show. And it was held last JUNE 23, 2011 contrary to your blog's claim. Please be careful in labeling our local designers. Joey Samson is the one of the country's top menswear designer, he is also a decent and honest individual. Please stop besmirching the reputation of our designers with inaccurate claims. Even though you posed this particular blog as a poll, the way you phrased your statement was very misleading and malicious. If you really did not intend any malice on this please change the date bec they both showed this particular design in June. That way your readers can be assured that you did proper research and not just trying to create issues and are only bias to designers that you like.

i also hope that you will understand more how fashion works (as suggested by the title of your blog). both designers drew inspiration from an existing form of clothing. so you cannot really say that Yohji's idea was original.

  25. I am going to reiterate my comment here and I hope you will post it to be fair: This Joey Samson collection was first showed in March 2011 at the Singapore Men's fashion week. He then showed it again last JUNE 2011 (not July) at the Fashion Watch show as women's wear. I know this for a fact because I attended both shows. I hope the author will be more responsible in posting and labeling our local designers as copycats. I guess you are really not a fashion person because you don't understand the reinvention and evolution of trends and styles. If you only got your timelines straight, will you call Yohji Yamamoto as copycat??? I doubt! I don't know what you have against our local designers...

  26. Di ba designer ng HUMAN si Joey Samson?

  27. To settle this debate on whether this particular piece was shown in Singapore, why doesn't everyone just google joey samson singapore men's fashion week. Joey's entire collection can be seen from start to finish and the piece in question is not part of it. I hope those who claim they were in Singapore for the show will not start saying the clip in youtube has been edited because it clearly is not.

As to the poll, I'd say copying. And this is not the only case! One time I was shopping in Adora where i saw a nice top with an interesting unique detail. I went around the mall after and went to Myth (where Joey sells his stuff) where I was surprised to find the exact same detail on his merchandise that I saw in Adora!

  28. The Fashion Watch show featuring the whole of Joey Samson's Mitate collection was shown on June 23, 2011 in Manila. Yohji Yamamoto's S/S2012 collection was shown on June 23, 2011 in Paris. Therefore, it is impossible that Joey Samson allegedly copied the chaps and trousers look from Yohji Yamamoto (or vice versa) because both designers presented their collections on the same date.

  29. IN THE WORLD OF FASHION, THERE ARE NO ORIGINAL DESIGNS ANYMORE. Everything is just a REMAKE WITH A PERSONAL TWIST.

Classics turned avant garde. Avant garde transformed to minimalist. Menswear made it's way to women's wear. The list goes on.

THE ONLY THING ORIGINAL IS PERSONAL STYLE. THINK ABOUT IT.
