Rajo's Unique Wedding Gown: Inspired by VERSACE?

Source:  Wedding-beauty.com

Source:  Rajo's Blog

Rajo Laurel was once accused of copying the cobweb dress of Arcy Gayatin, Cebu based designer, when his version landed on the cover of Women's Wear Daily. He defended himself by explaining that the said technique of fabric design has already been seen during the 80's.  This was the inspiration of his cobweb dress.

When one of my readers saw my A Unique Wedding Gown post, he/she commented:  "I've seen this design before, by Versace. But it didn't have the tulle, and in a different color".  He/she also posted the link Wedding-Beauty, where we can see the photo of the gown.

The reader's comment made me wonder, did Rajo get his inspiration from seashells and waves (according to his blog), or from Versace?  What do you think?

By the way, thank you anonymous reader for the comment.

  2. it doesnt matter at all if he was inpired by this specific work of versace and infuse it with the inspiration of the sea shell and the waves. it looks brilliant.. at least hes not a design rip-off. or dagdag-bawas kind or mangongopya but hindi kaya pantayn ang kinopya or higitan pa ito! other designer whos internationally knowned also took inspiration from the works of other designer.. still infuse its aesthetic on its work... duh! each designers do that right from the start of a career. wag lang yun magongopya ng parang xerox then barubal ang workmanship/craftmanship. tamaan na ang tamaan.. pero sa totoo lang. maraming ganun sa karamihan!

  4. Not Versace. It's more like a Dior influence; but not a copy.

The technique isn't new but I love the way he re-invented it.

  6. Well given that Rajo doesn't copy designs. One thing is for sure even if he is already earning a lot from his designs he still asks people to buy him free drinks..operative word "asks"

  9. For me, there is nothing wrong to reference once work with other international designers. Being too literal and copying every detail is a MAJOR problem. Originality in the global fashion industry is lacking. I admire designers who can take it as their inspiration. What kills me? He uses cheap fabrics and does not get the effect. At the end of the day, it is all business. He did brand himself in the wrong way. Major fashion houses are always on google alert. The house of Versace is aware of this. It is a shame that he will be in their bad track record. We have to criticize the work of the designer and not his personal characteristics. I love this blog.

  11. its always like that designers copy designs from european designers for easy money and convince their client or people that it is all original. i just wish that these designers would credit the designers they copied in anyway because the credibility will be at stake if their claims would be proven false. sayang naman ung name nila.

  21. Eh ganyan naman si Rajo. even yung clutch na binebenta nya sa House of Laurel eh plagiarized design from Prada!

  22. CORRECT! RAJO PROCLAIMED HIMSELF AS A DESIGNER WHEREIN HE SHOULD ELEVATE HIMSELF AS THE GREAT COPIER OF OTHER DESIGN FROM OTHER DESIGNER!

  24. I received this dress as a birthday gift from my parents and brother; they got the copper colored one. I fell in love with the dress as soon as I pulled it out of the packaging.

  25. copycat! from arcy gayatin to anthony vacarello, and now versace. what an ugly credibility to even be a judge on project runway PH. doesn't practice what he preaches.
