Hail to the Queen/King? Chapter 2

The Hail to the Queen/King? Chapter 1 story led a reader from the U.S.A. to send me a thank you message for exposing abusive social climbers. Unfortunately, this reader (she) also had a dose of the ungratefulness of this magazine editor.  She was hesitant at first to give me permission to share her story, but after much convincing, she finally agreed. Here is her story:

She met the magazine editor (him/her) in a fashion show when she was vacationing in Manila.  After that meeting, they started exchanging Facebook messages.  Being the hospitable Filipina, she told him/her to get in touch in the event that he/she visits the U.S.A.

One rainy afternoon, the reader received a call from him/her requesting her to drive him/her around because no one was available.  She hurriedly picked him/her up from where he/she was staying and brought him/her shopping.  She even offered to pay for some of his/her purchases and he/she accepted the offer without batting his/her fake eyelash.  After their shopping spree, he/she requested her to drop him/her off at a certain restaurant because he/she has a dinner date with a male model friend.

On the way to the restaurant, he/she invited her to join him/her for the said dinner date. That evening, she ended up paying for their dinner.  After dinner, she brought them clubbing.  At the bar, he/she started posing with the hot Caucasian men while she took their pictures.  In his/her Facebook page, he/she only posted his/her photos with the men, minus his/her photos with her.

The sad part was when it was time for him/her to leave for the Philippines, the reader did not hear from him/her.  No goodbyes nor thank you to his/her driver, cashier and photographer.  The worst part was when she came back to Manila, she bumped into him/her at a party.  He/she just said hello and made no effort to invite her even for a cup of coffee.

Thank you dear reader for allowing me to share your story.  Let this be a lesson to all of us. Please stay away from ungrateful social climbers.

In closing, I wish to borrow a quote from Blaire Waldorf, "not even a manicure can mask those peasant hands." This is our message to the Queen/King, "not even your shiny pearls can mask your grim attitude."

What is BOBON?

When I first saw this photo, I thought that BOBON is the men's line of Puey Quinones.  I posted it on my Facebook page to show it to my friends.  Soon enough it proliferated on the Internet and I received a private message from Ulysses King, Jr., manager of BOBON.  He gave me a ring and explained to me what is BOBON.

BOBON is a retail brand located on the 4th level of the Podium that allows buyers greater accessibility to creations made by skilled Filipino artists. It started as a collaboration with Puey Quinones in 2008.  Puey left the brand eventually and now BOBON is a collective effort of several Filipino designers.  Here are some of the featured designers:

Arnold Galang

Eric delos Santos

Estien Quijano

Roland Lirio

Ulysses King

Yako Reyes

Please drop by the Podium to check out the latest collections of these designers.  BOBON also features guest designers from time to time.

Puey Quinones Paid Fashion Scam Victims 195,000 Php in Cash!

Last night at around 8:26pm, I received an SMS message from Jhon (the victim in the Puey Quinones Fashion Scam) that read "Hi michael ... We got already the sum of 195,000 in cash and we returned the suit and the gown.  But Puey did not show up.  Only his mom and his cousin ...  That's all ...  Thanks ...".

Puey charged Jhon and his fiance 150,000 Php for the wedding gown and the suit (Dansen). When they realized that Puey could not deliver, they panicked and sought help from Francis Libiran for a new wedding gown and suit.  With less than two weeks before the wedding, Francis charged them 195,000 Php for the rush job.  As compensation, they demanded that Puey should shoulder the additional 45,000 Php for the damages he caused.  Jhon went on saying:

"Money cannot and will never replace the burden and emotional damages that Puey gave to our lives. Yun lang ... Anyways, it's all done ...  The good news for us now is we received what is due to us. And I'm happy now that we don't have to argue or deal with Puey anymore."

I am glad that I was able to help Jhon using my Facebook and blog.  After all, this is the reason why I started this blog.  My fashion advocacy is to help clients who are clueless about the Pinoy world of fashion.  I want clients to know whom they can trust and whom they can not.

Thank you Jhon for entrusting your story to me.  I did not know you prior to the Fashion Scam story and now I feel close to you.  Thank you for inviting me to your wedding on March 5.  I will be there.

Todo Na ..... (All Out .....)

Burt Bacharah said "a chair is still a chair even when there's no one sitting there" .  In this story the chair is not just a chair, it was not just used for sitting.   The chairs alongside with other pieces of furniture were used as payment for liabilities.

This furniture designer started with a small space, moved to an extremely large space, transfered to another small space, until finally closed its doors.  His latest small space, on the third level of a mall in Makati, did not do well so he was forced to shut it down. When his store ceased to operate, he did not have cash to settle his liabilities so the mall management had no choice but to accept his furniture pieces as compensation.  We can now see these furniture pieces being used by the mall for special events.

There was also one instance when this furniture designer organized a male models go see (audition) in his office.  A professional photographer was directing the shoot for the go see.  Some models were shocked when they were instructed to take off everything, including their underwear. The designer knew about it but did nothing to stop the photographer from taking the nude pictures in his office.

This furniture designer who is a former TV host, has been spotted many times in Boracay partying with his boys. Who said he did not have cash to pay for mall rent?

Can you guess who he is?  Play with the title and maybe you will get the answer.  Oh well, I am hungry now, it is time to go to Starbucks and grab a piece of spinach quiche.

Rhett Eala: Putting the Philippine Map in the World of Fashion

To celebrate the Silver Anniversary of the Edsa Revolution, the The Ayala Malls stages an exhibit at the Greenbelt 5 (2nd floor area beside Adora). Included in the exhibit are the latest designs of Rhett Eala for Collezione.

Collezione is an all Filipino brand that brags of its high quality items that are 100 percent produced in the Philippines. In 2007, the brand was searching for a unique Philippine symbol. Under the leadership of its creative director Rhett Eala, the brand came up with a metallic map on a black shirt. The shirt looked very smart and sold very well in the market. The positive response of the market inspired Rhett to create more designs featuring the Philippine map.

It was impossible for Collezione to prevent its competitors from using the Philippine map in their designs. This is why nowadays, we see other brands featuring the Philippine map in their designs as well. Imitation is after all the best form of flattery.

Nowadays, we see the Philippine map on many other fashion pieces. On Edsa's 25th Anniversary, it is just fitting that we credit Rhett Eala for introducing this simple yet brilliant concept of "wearing your nationalism". These chic items are very popular not only locally but also overseas. Collezione is now a must shopping stop for every "balikbayan" who needs to buy "pasalubongs".

If you have time, please drop by Greenbelt 5 and visit the exhibit. It also features other brands like Bayo, Swatch and Philip Stein.

Hail to the Queen/King? Chapter 1

There is a Filipino living in every major city in the world.  Last April, my Tsinoy friends, B.C., H.S. and I visited Reykjavik, Iceland.  When we were at this Icelandic geothermal spa called Blue Lagoon, we noticed two Asian looking teenagers (a girl and a boy) listening to our conversation. After a few minutes of eavesdropping,  one of them suddenly blurted out "Pilipino kayo?"  We all had a good laugh and started chatting with them.  It was surprising to know that there are Filipinos residing in Reykjavik.

In another European city, a popular Malate designer from the 80's received a  Facebook friend request from a magazine editor in Manila one day.  After looking at the mutual friend list, the designer decided to accept it.  The magazine editor (he/she) started sending messages that led the designer to believe that they know each other. One day he/she asked the designer if he/she can stay with him when he/she visits Europe.  Being the hospitable Filipino, the designer welcomed him/her with open arms.

The designer entertained him/her as a guest in his European home.  He generously fed his/her corpulent body and even brought him/her partying.  As a house guest, he/she did not even offer to help with the chores (courtesy?).  His/her has a bad habit of staring at straight men in straight clubs. Let us not even talk about his/her tables manners because they are truly unsightly.

When it was time to say goodbye, the magazine editor disappeared like a bubble.  No thank you note was left, not even a bud of tulip to show his/her gratitude.  The worst part of it all, the designer never heard from this social climber again.

The clue to this blind item lies in the title.  I apologize for using he/she, him/her and his/her as the pronouns because I am confused myself.  I really don't know which one is more appropriate.

This story is dedicated to all my readers overseas.  Let us be extra careful in accepting house guests. I hope you enjoyed reading this story.  Follow me on twitter:  micsylim.

Bongga Ka Day? (Are you Fabulous?)

"Bonnga Ka Day" or "Bongga" for short is one of my favorite Pinoy expressions.  The best translation I can think of is "You're Fabulous" or "Fabulous".  I can use "bongga" to describe the pieces of this furniture designer but not his business ethics.

The showroom of this furniture/interior designer used to be located somewhere in Makati.  Apparently, he and his business partner owe the landlord two years worth of rental fees amounting to millions.  The landlord eventually lost his patience, decided to evict them and filed a legal complaint.  I think this is one of the reasons why their showroom was moved to Taguig.

This designer also reserved several slots in one of the malls but could not pay for the reservation fee.  Mall could not wait any longer.  It had no choice but to give the spaces to other interested parties who are willing to pay.

My "bongga" friend, Satcha Mitchell is an avid fan of this furniture/interior designer.  We visited their impressive showroom in Taguig a few months ago.  It seems like their firm has many big time projects.  They were charging me a design fee of 1M Php for a town house with a floor area 140 square meters .  If they are making so much money, why don't they want to pay for their obligations?

Look for the answer of this blind item in the title:  Bongga Ka Day.  Thank you for reading. Follow me on twitter: micsylim.

P.S.  Thank you to Satcha Mitchell for suggesting the title.  I love it!!!

From Jewelry to Minaudieres

After finishing her degree in interior design from PSID and DLSU-College of St. Benilde, Vida Tan-Lim realized that interior design is not her cup of tea.  She could not stand the dusts in the job sites.  This made her shift  to jewelry design, her real passion.  Vida's jewelry pieces have been spotted on many celebrities and featured on many lifestyle magazines.

For her latest collection, Vida ventured into minaudieres (small ornamental case) .  Here are some of her latest designs:

If you like stingray cuffs, I am sure you will fall in love with these unique creatures:

Vida is known for her bib jewelry necklaces.  For this collection, she introduced scarf jewelry necklaces that can add drama to any plain ensembles.

Quits Na Tayo!!! (We're Even)

Cell phone roaming charges can be very expensive. Every time I am out for the country, my GLOBE bill for the month always increases drastically.  I remember one time when I was in Europe for 2 weeks, my bill sky rocketed to almost 20t Php.  That for me is a big deal because on the average my monthly bill never exceeds 5t Php.

If someone calls my roaming mobile, do I incur roaming charges even if I do not answer the call? I have been receiving contradictory answers.  Someone please enlighten me on the issue. I once called GLOBE's customer service hot line to ask about this and the answer I got was "No".  From then on, I avoided answering phone calls when I am overseas. Just being practical, I guess.

How about you? Do you answer/make calls when you are abroad?

The cell phone bill of a lifestyle writer accumulated to a six digit figure  I think he does not only answer/make calls when he is overseas.  My hunch is that he runs a cell phone marathon every time he travels. With such a big usage, the management of this telecommunications company should be treating him like royalty.  However, in this case, he was not.  He was actually being contacted by the company's collection department because he refused to pay for the bill.

After months of not settling his outstanding bill, the media department of this company invited him for a dialogue. In the meeting, he proposed to publish several press releases in exchange of his unpaid bill.  Since the company wants to maintain a good relationship with this writer, the company had no other choice but to accept his offer.

Guys, do you seriously need a clue?  T.Y. for all your support!!!

Forget/Forgot..... the payment??? (Nakalimot sa Abono!)

Filipino designers love to travel overseas to get artistic inspiration.  This is a story about a popular designer who stayed with a friend during his visit to an Asian country.  The friend works there as an expatriate.

One day, the designer requested this friend to make a reservation in a posh restaurant because he is hosting dinner for Filipino friends in that city.  Dinner went very well, everyone enjoyed the food. When it was time to settle the bill, the designer requested his friend to advance the payment because he does not have any local currency (doesn't he know how to use a credit card?).

The following day when the designer went shopping, the same incident happened.  The friend did not mind advancing the payment because he thought that this designer was just be too lazy to have his USD exchanged. He was thinking maybe the designer will just give me the USD equivalent before he leaves.

Unfortunately, nothing like that happened.  The designer left without paying.  The friend was hoping that the money will be wired to him, but sad to say,  he got no word from the designer.

Did the designer experience short term memory loss? Did he swallow a pill that made him forget about the advanced payments? Was he drunk when the advanced payments were made on his behalf?  Puzzling!

By the way, this expatriate friend is now living in Manila but he has not receive any payment because he is too shy to bring it up.  I wonder why are they still friends?  I see them hanging out together.

In my initial draft, I named the city and country but decided not to because it will be a giveaway.  The photo of the currency is a clue. I will just give you another clue, he is not a young designer.

Wedding Gown Trend: The Battle of the Bottoms (Pabonggahan)

The modern Filipina bride is becoming more daring.  Nowadays, very few brides will opt for a gown with the a classic bottom.

In an attempt to be different, they collaborate with designers to come up with different inspirations for the bottom part of their wedding gowns.

Gown # 1's inspiration:  Feather Duster

Gown # 2's inspiration:  Royal Curtain

Gown # 3's inspiration:  Icing on the Cake

Which one do you like most?  I would love to hear your thoughts.  Perhaps you can send some photos to add up to the inspirations that I have mentioned.    Good luck to all the brides to be out there.

Rajo's Unique Wedding Gown: Inspired by VERSACE?

Source:  Wedding-beauty.com

Source:  Rajo's Blog

Rajo Laurel was once accused of copying the cobweb dress of Arcy Gayatin, Cebu based designer, when his version landed on the cover of Women's Wear Daily. He defended himself by explaining that the said technique of fabric design has already been seen during the 80's.  This was the inspiration of his cobweb dress.

When one of my readers saw my A Unique Wedding Gown post, he/she commented:  "I've seen this design before, by Versace. But it didn't have the tulle, and in a different color".  He/she also posted the link Wedding-Beauty, where we can see the photo of the gown.

The reader's comment made me wonder, did Rajo get his inspiration from seashells and waves (according to his blog), or from Versace?  What do you think?

By the way, thank you anonymous reader for the comment.

Tell Me...... How much is your "UTANG" ?

A fabric supplier won a law suit against a veteran designer, who had unpaid bills amounting to 700t Php.  A warrant of arrest has been issued but the designer has never been arrested.  According to my source he always manages to bribe the arresting officers.

Apart from the fabric supplier, he also owes a high end salon in Jupiter an unknown sum of money.  Everyday, he would pass by the said salon to have his hair blow dried.  Eventually he became a regular, so he requested for a credit line.  They have agreed that he would be billed on a monthly basis instead.  From then on, he would go in the salon, have his hair done, and leave.  Almost a year passed by before the salon's management realized that he has not been paying for his monthly bills.  The bargaining process dragged on and on but still, no payment was collected.  Finally, the salon decided to ban him.  I guess this is the reason why he no longer wears his hair down (he he he).

Clue:  This veteran designer is renting a house in one of the posh villages in Makati.  He is also known to transfer from one house to the other.  Why? Maybe because of unpaid rent?

Tell Me..... Where did he go wrong?

Ang Isinanlang BIRKIN (The Pawned BIRKIN)

designer carrying the Birkin before he pawned it

If the Louis Vuitton Speedy is the gateway to luxury, the Hermes Birkin is definitely the epitome of luxury.  Designers are exposed to the world of luxury and sometimes they feel the pressure to keep up with the Joneses.  This was what happened to one popular designer.

The designer bought this Hermes Birkin (40cm in Tan) from DR, an Hermes reseller, on an installment basis.  The buyer did not have a checking account (why? don't you have a business?) so he promised to give cash for the monthly payments. When it was time for the monthly collection, the buyer was nowhere to be found.  He refused to answer DR's calls and when DR got hold of the sister, he was told that the buyer went to the USA (convenient excuse for "estafadores").  This upset DR (it's a six digit bag!), so he threatened to sue him (not effective).  Common friends finally offered to help recover the Birkin but the bag was missing in action.  Where did the Birkin go?

THE BUYER PAWNED THE BIRKIN IN BAGAHOLIC !!!
(mind blowing tongue twister).

Can you imagine pawning something not yours?  The buyer told DR that he could not raise enough cash to retrieve the Birkin so DR agreed to share the burden.  The worst part was the buyer could not even give 100% of his share.  Sad, sadder, saddest!

Do you know who pawned the Birkin?
Clue:  You can spot him in the glossy magazines carrying it.

By the way, this designer has a stylist friend who bought an Hermes Herbag from DR.  He did not pay for it as well.  "Birds of the same feather flock together."  Oh..... wait, this will require another post!

A Unique Wedding Gown: Love it or Hate it?

Here's another angle of the gown

This ultra unique wedding gown by Rajo Laurel caught my attention!  It was worn by a bride on her weddingday, not by a model for a fashion show (in fairness, this bride does have a model frame).  I am definitely loving the impeccable construction of the top part but I am not sure of the three cone-shaped bottom design.  I admire the ingenuity of the designer but I find it too risque for a wedding gown. Perhaps it is just because my "classic" taste.

Please share your thoughts.  Is it a CHECK or an EX?  and Why?
(sounds like a question for a quiz, that's the teacher in me)

RETAGGING: The Latest Craze in Menswear

The collar of the shirt was damaged because of Retagging

COLOURS label was simple impossible to remove
Photos courtesy of reader
Special thanks to graphic artist:  MIKO LEE

After the Puey Quinones incident, more clients who were victims of RETAGGING have been sharing their stores.  One reader sent me photos of her son's polo and pants.  She requested me not to reveal her identity.  Let us respect that. From the photos, it is noticeable that the collar was damaged because of retagging.  It was impossible to remove the COLOURS branding from the pants so the designer simply attached her tag in the middle.

It seems like male clients are more prone to this malpractice.  Retagging is a crime because we have laws on intellectual property (Republic Act 8293).  What puzzles me is that if this designer feels that it is a waste of  time to create the polo and pants from scratch, why can't she be honest?  She should have advised the client to go to the malls instead.  Filipinos are lucky to have many malls that sell reasonably priced good quality garments.  Go shopping instead!

My advice:  To the brides to be, I suggest you buy the ensembles of the male entourage members from the malls if your designer is too busy with the gowns of the ladies.  Just send them to the alteration center if minor changes are needed. This will spare you from all the drama.

And now for the much awaited question.  Who is this female designer?

Clue:  This female designer has a long name...

HULI KA! Follow me on twitter: micsylim.

Desiger Offered 2 Gives to Fashion Scam Victims

Fashion Designer Puey Quinones Offered to 2 Gives to Fashion Scam Victims
Source: Yahoo News

Sa caption, ito ang mababasa: "The designer asked 30k for this suit.

Nakasaad dito na, "BOBON is not in any way involved in the design, production or sale of the suit in the photo, or the affixing of the 'BOBON by Puey Quinones' label to the suit."

Nilinaw din sa note na, "BOBON is not affiliated with any one designer. Although the label "Bobon by Puey Quinones" was initially used in 2008, this label was discontinued more than a year ago. Since 2010, all BOBON pieces simply bear the label 'BOBON.'

"We have no knowledge of how the label 'Bobon by Puey Quinones' ended up in the suit in the Facebook post as we have used every effort to reclaim and destroy these old labels. We are certain that this suit was not purchased by the owner from or through BOBON."

Sa kabilang banda, nilinaw naman ng bride na si Shea Gamboa na walang kinalaman ang may-ari ng Bobon sa naging problema nila kay Puey. Sabi pa niya sa isang comment sa Facebook thread, "The transaction was between the couple and the designer. So don't worry. You're [owner of Bobon] out of this."

"I REGRET THAT ALL THIS HAPPENED." Samantala, sa artikulo pa rin ng Stylebible.ph, nailathala ang opisyal na statement naman ng fashion designer.

Ito ang kabuuang pahayag ni Puey: "Regarding the recent "fashion scam", I regret that all this happened. First and foremost, I would like to apologize to the couple for all the trouble that it has caused them.

"I was simply pressured to create a suit and found a perfect blank canvas to develop. I know the entire situation could have been handled better but now it has just been blown out of proportion and affected so many others.

"I assure all concerned that I am doing the best that I can to fix this situation. I have been in contact with the party involved and intend to settle this peacefully.

"To the couple who brought attention to this matter and to everyone else that have raised concerns over the quality of my service as a designer... I am sorry.

"I am doing all that I can to make sure that this does not happen again.

"Thank you for your understanding and for your concern."

NO TO NEW SUIT. Sa Twitter post ni Kat noong Pebrero 15, sinabi nito na hiniling ni Puey na ibalik na lamang ang Dansen suit at gagawa na lamang siya ng bagong suit. Ngunit ang kasalan ay mangyayari umano in less than two weeks.

At kaninang umaga, nag-tweet muli ang Trip na Trip host. Sinabi niya na nangako si Puey ng refund, "Pero 2 gives. Needless to say, my friend went to another designer for help."

Sinabi rin niya, "I never thought many people would react to it. All I wanted was to help a friend out. Sana hindina mangyari ulit."
